Walt Disney Treasures Wave 5 DVDs Press Release
Just got an e-mail from Mr. Maltin, myself:
"Hi... Thanks for your kind words about the Treasures series. CASEY BATS AGAIN and SUSIE are being saved for another disc... and both SCROOGE McDUCK AND MONEY and FREEWAYPHOBIA have an educational component that makes them ideal candidates for yet another release we have in mind. I think you'll enjoy the Rarities set when it comes out in December. cheers, Leonard Maltin"
I can't really imagine a better set for Casey and Susie to be on than Disney Rarities: 1920s-1960s, but it looks more certain that we're going to get an Educational Treasures set, even if isn't exclusively shorts that fall under the "Educational" title card.

That educational short will likely not have many true educational shorts then.
Scrooge McDuck and Money
Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land
The Two Freewayphobias.
That is probabaly close to disc 1. All four are really featurettes and not short. Probably running in the 20+ minutes each.
Disc 2 - You and Your, Im No Fool shorts. Maybe a few more of the more interesting Educational shorts sprikled in. Sound like a good 'un to me.
Humphrey - those are all good. I initially thought no to John Henry then remembered they kind of cut it up on American Legends.

Well, I'm not sure anyone has told us so far. But hopefully enough to include Silly Symphonies vol 2, Pluto vol 2, DD vol 3 and 4 and maybe another Rarities. So probably another two or three waves - at least. There is also some wishful thinking about a set of "educational" films - could be very interesting.Alan wrote:how many waves of walt disney treasures are going to be released in total?
About Susie and Casey again - the seemingly most logical thing would be to include them in this year's Rarities set. Since that isn't going to happen I don't quite see any other solution than another "this and that" cartoon set (it doesn't have to be named Rarities vol 2). Even though the Treasures have not focused on post-Walt material, they still might figure that some of the later shorts material belongs in such a set - pretty much like the 80s and 90s MM titles. I think we can trust Leonard Maltin to do this material justice - again.

Alan - I am thinking three. A lot of the longer animated featurettes have yet to come out so they can stretch it that far. Of course they can go further but as far as animated shorts looks like three more after the current year.
Nothing compared to Looney Toons though. Golden Collection 3 this year. They have already mapped out until volume 10 and they could go as far as Volume 17.

Several tv shows aired them. The Mickey Mouse Club in the 1950s reran many of the Disney cartoons, as did several other shows on the Disney Channel back in the day, like The Ink and Paint Club. And every so often, House of Mouse used to show a classic cartoon.Alan wrote:Quick questions: Were the disney cartoons (like the mickey, donald shorts) shown on TV as a "series"?

Originally they were shown in movie theaters. Later on, they were shown in between shows on the Disney Channel. There were a couple of shows on the Disney Channel that had them grouped together. Mousterpiece Theater and Donald's Quack Attack are two that I can think of at the moment.Alan wrote:Quick questions: Were the disney cartoons (like the mickey, donald shorts) shown on TV as a "series"?

Back in the day, when you went to a movie, you usually stayed much longer than the movie's length because they'd play a cartoon or a live-action short before a movie. No, I don't know which shorts played with which movie, but for the live-action Vault Disney Collection (along with 20,000 League under the Sea, THe Love Bug, The Apple Dumpling Gang, and the Witch Mountain movies), they include the theatrical short that played with the movie at the time. Off the top of my head:Alan wrote:how many shorts did they show at a time in the movie theatre? Like 5 or something?cj wrote: Originally they were shown in movie theaters.
Pollyanna: Mickey Mouse in The Nifty Nineties
The Parent Trap: Donald Duck in Donald's Double
20,000 Leagues under the Sea: Donald Duck in Grand Canyonscope (non-anamorphic)
Swiss Family Robinson: DOnald Duck in Sea Salts
ETA: With the success of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, they tried to bring back the cartoon-before-a-movie practice. "Tummy Trouble" was played before Honey I Shrunk The Kids in 1989 (or at least on the VHS tape). And while it was non-Disney, WB's Carrotblanca played before a movie as well (don't remember). And of course, Pixar has their 'toons on before their movies.

Which Roger Rabbit short was before Dick Tracy?Mr. Toad wrote:And there was another Roger Rabbit short before Dick Tracy. A Bonkers short was paired before a movie as well.
Alan - only one or two shorts were played before movies. They would also run a newsreel(before TV) and then the feature film.
And trailers of course came after the movies then, right? It's funny how they still call them trailers but they're before the movie. Of course, I remember Kram telling me that some girls behind him during Fantastic Four called them "infomercials".
WB often includes a classic cartoon or live-action short with several of their catalog movies pre-1975, so as to recreate the theatrical experience. 20th Century Fox includes the movietone newsreels in many of their Studio Classics releases.

The other two Roger Rabbit cartoons are:
"Trail Mix-Up" before "A Far Off Place"
"Tummy Trouble" before "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids"
Mickey Mouse's "Runaway Brain" before "A Kid in King Arthur's Court", "A Goofy Movie", and "George of the Jungle".
That's all the recent Disney cartoons before movies that I can think of at the moment.

'Lorenzo' showed before the movie 'Raising Helen'
random thoughts...
Is Casey Bats Again being saved for an unedited Make Mine Music / Melody Time set maybe?
Susie The Blue Coupe... umm...........unsure on that one.
Educational Treasures is a go.. next year, perhaps?
Don't forget the Figaro cartoons.. where would those go?
If there is a package film (MMM and MT) treasure, would there be a Global Good Neighbor film treasure (unedited Saludos Amigos/Three Caballeros laserdisc set + more) ?? The Global Good Neighbor set would probably sell better as a treasure then a regular release.

Thanks Mr. Toad. I knew I was forgetting something. I must have missed the Bonker's part of your post.Mr. Toad wrote:CJ - Bonkers Off His Rocker and Pedal to the Metal played before movies as well but I can not recall what they were.
I did that too. Definately a big let down.I actually bought the VHS of Dick Tracy just for the Roger Rabbit short andd was horrified when it was not there.
