The Next Big Collection?
I'm a firm believer in uniformity. One of the things that literally "made" Buena Vista Home Video was the invent of "collections" now we just seem to have "Collectors Editions", which is fine with me, but......once again uniformity here doesn't exsist except within "The Platium" releases. And now that Disney is more or less fading out what is left of "The Gold Classic Collection" I'm wonding what would be the "next big thing." Would anyone like myself enjoy seeing Disney re-invent their video releases to reflect this element? I know I would....for some reason a collection should fit within "a collection" with tiny details like all the covers and side bar art all fitting within the same kida design elements etc. etc. Anyone else share this dream lol. Let me know
If you want it, I've got it. Need Disney Treasures, Truelife and some series email me for my list.

I like the idea of collections, but I think the animated classics situation is too 'confused' to work out a collection. Maybe in the next format, they can distinguish the 40-something classics they've released at that point, and have a uniform packaging design, even if some of them get multiple discs.
I'd also like a Live Action Collector's Edition Collection of some sorts (they can come up with the name
)...whereas their popular live action films of the last two decades get Vault Disney-esque treatment. Stuff like The Santa Clause (that SE has no right even being considered a SE), Cool Runnings, Mighty Ducks, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Muppet Christmas Carol, etc. It's really odd that they only give good treatment to the flops, critically-bashed, and/or overlooked productions like Newsies, Tron, and the live action Jungle Book, with a few exceptions here or there.
Anyway, yes I do like the collections - and your point about the Platinum line being unifying can pretty much be debated, as the only thing the Lion King seems to have in common with Snow White is they both have 2-discs and are heavily promoted.

Now you're all probably sick of this but:
Introducing....
The Walt Disney Definitive Collection
Starting New Year's Day, 2004, all 49 of Walt Disney's full-length animated features will be re-released in theatres, to be followed by a 2-Disc DVD Set later in the year. On the same day as the DVD release, any DTV sequels or TV spin-off series will be released on DVD (in AT LEAST 2-disc sets!).
Now, doesn't that sound like a great idea?

Actually, your opinion is not far off from the truth. It really does bug me how Disney films have so many different logos: one from the film, and one from each case from each re-release.IggieKuzco wrote:More collections! More collections!![]()

So far, Sleeping Beauty has 5, Snow White has 3, Little Mermaid has 2, Beauty and the Beast has 3, Lady and the Tramp has 2, Beauty and the Beast X'mas has 3, The Black Cauldron has 3, and there's dozens more but I'm just too lazy.

and that's exactly why i don't care for the different collections, at least among the major animated "classics". i don't pay attention to the collection label.. i'm going to get the movie, no matter what, and if another version comes out and is significantly different as far as supplements go, then i'll probably get multiple versions.. but as far as collections and labels go, i don't really care

Same with me-I won't get all the Platinums just because I want to have the entire PLatinum collection (not yet, anyway) but I would get all the SE's of the Beauty and the Beast movies, cause they're my favourite.
I think what we all tend to take for granted is that as long as we get to enjoy the movie that we love, who cares about anything else? Who cares about clarity, or aspect ratio, or cover art, or fluffy extras?

Ya Think?
You know it funny though but if you think about it I'd have to say that Special Editions are just another form of a "collection"....I know most of you might disagree but it's all about marketing.....and besides when it comes right down to it, any and all of these titles will be re-released so if it's not NOW, later on the packaging will change. It's Disney's way of keeping things looking like new and as fresh as possiable.

I like the idea of the SE collection, it's not an obvious "collection" but it does bring uniformity to those titles, that are deemed "Special Edition (2-Disc)"
They started the collection off good with Sleeping Beauty, and hopefully it will carry on to Alice in Wonderland, Pocahontas, Lilo and Stitch, and then maybe a rerelease of Tarzan, Mulan, Hercules, and many many more.
I for one plan to buy the whole Platinum Collection, even though I don't care for 101 Dalmations or Bambi, and to tell the truth JB isn't high on my list either, but still better than 101 D.

Yeah Phillip I'd have to agree with you on that......funny thing is there's several animated Disney films that aren't exactly on my top ten list...Piglet's Big Movie to say the least even though technically it was theatrically release ECK. ECK ECK. Funny thing though I bought it to kinda keep my collection animated films updated WHY, I'll never know.......I work in the animation industry and I think they should have just GIVEN up a copy ECK... sorry.

The abomination that is Piglet's Big Movie is an insult to the Winnie the Pooh characters and shouldn't be bothered with. Thankfully, because WDTV animated it, it's not considered an animated classic, even though it went theatrical, so I see no need to own it.
Me, I'd like to see one uniform collection standard for the entire animated classics canon -- same content level, same packaging style, with the 14 Platinums being labelled as such and the others all labelled as SEs, but still looking the same as the Platinums do.

I think we're asking too much of Disney to come up with a Definitive Collection for all 42 animated classics. While it would be nice, if they haven't done it by now, there's no way they'll do if for DVD, especially with a new format just around the horizon. I think the closest they came was to The Black Diamond VHS's. I really like the Platinums. The cover art is unique. Instead of having all characters displayed in equal dimensions, they have the main character blown up with the supporting characters at the bottom. I think this makes the covers look more striking. Of course, there should be a little more uniformity in the spine.
I think Disney is starting to release the Special Editions as Masterpiece Editions, which is fine, but what about Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, and Oliver & Company? They don't fit the "collection."

There's enough confusion with the current titles. At this point, I'd rather Disney focus on releasing their Platinum and SE sets and not have to deal with any other pevious releases. Once these 2 labels are fullfilled along with the few past Gold Editions, I'd feel that would offer sufficient material in terms of Disneys animated features... no need to start over again.
