Americans: Is Mariah Carey overexposed?

Post by rodis »

I saw at another board that some fans were worried that with 'We Belong Together' and 'Shake It Off' tearing up the airwaves for months, maybe it's hurting her in fact and could cause a backlash.

Anyway, I for one, enjoy all the success Mariah is having (album still in the top 5 since its April 12th release). I got tired of 'We Belong Together' before it even hit the charts so I'm now enjoying 'Shake It Off'. That song is the most played song on american radio in the last 3 weeks with 200 million audience impressions.

im not a huge fan of her myself. Well i used to be back in her "hero", "Anytime u need a friend", & "fantasy" days....but not anymore. All over XM radios' "Hits" channels u cant to one of the main channels w/out hearing at least ONE of her new hits...sometimes 2 stations play the same song...

Is 'It's Like That' (first single) still being played on the radio?

She's only been visible in the media (American's) for about a year because of her comeback. So no, in my opinon, she's not overexposed. I'm really impressed by her album. It's not groundbreaking and it's certainly not my type of "artistic" preference, but it's all really good pop music. Quote me on this, because I think she has the right combination of commerical success and critical acceptance to sweep at next year's Grammy's. (I've agreed with every album of the year <in terms of who they nominated each year nearly every time for the past 10 years, except last>.) :)

Hmm. This is going to sound funny but in my life, I've only heard one song by Mariah Carey.....and I was born and raised in NYC. LOLOL.

You know what's funnier? People sewing size 6 tags on her size 12 clothing so that Carey would think that she's a size 6.

Now that's an old one

BTW, you've probably heard more than one Mariah song in your life, you just don't know it's her. For sure.

God, last summer I had to go to camp and like half the kids there had iPods (inclulding me.). Everytime they were listening to their iPods, they were signing the lyrics to "We belong together" which made me assume they were listening to that song.

Yet, I don't really think Mariah is really overexposed though. I call it a comeback. In fact, I'm actually kinda glad she's getting more attention. Lately, the American music industry has been giving thritysomethings such as her and Gwen Stefani more of a chance. Not unlike in 2004, where 13 year old JoJo who was barely wearing nothing and signing about dumping her boyfriend( okay, I'm 14. I've never had a boyfriend and right now I'm sitting in front of my computer typing this messgae while eating a sundae.). JoJo made feel like a loser because I was 12 when she came out and I wasn't really doing anything with my life. Now looking back, I sort of feel sorry for JoJo because she was overexposed at a young age. Basically what I'm saying is that it's good for Mariah Carrey to be overexposed rather than some young teenage girl.

When I think of overexposed I think of people who are everywhere, on
TV, Movies and/or Radio, Like J. LO (J.Ho as Mariah fans will call her), Lindsay Lohan, and Jessica Simpson. Also, one factor sorely lacking in all three is TALENT, sure they can shake their ass with the best of them but vocally, non can compare to Mariah. One of the reasons I like Mariah is that, unless you go looking for her you don't really ever see her except for awards nights, or on BET or MTV, all of which is up to the viewer.

Mariah Carey is in a class all to her self. She has proved that she is not an overnight sensation like so many of her critics have said. Sure she made some dumb decisions in her career (like "Glitter") but she has always rebounded. Overexposed, no, I doubt it. When I am driving around and a Mariah Carey song comes on the radio the volume goes up. I really like her and am glad that there is new music of hers to listen to.

Please don't lump her in the group of no-talents like J-Lo, Brittany, Jessica, Ashlee, Lindsay and all of those poor wannabe's. Mariah has god-given talent and has proven that over the years. I would listen to the "Glitter" soundtrack before I listened to any of the above mentioned no-talents.

Mariah Carey is truly a voice to be listened to.

That's perfect - Lindsay, I mean. They should start calling her, "Lindsay HoLand" instead of Lohan!

I liked her when I was a kid, but even then, her banshee scream was over the top. Yeah, good for you Mariah, you can sing at the right note to open garage doors and junk, but she overused it, where her ability to hit those high notes surpassed everything else and when she started getting into more R&B and rap, I got much less interested. Out of all those other pop-tarts out right now, Mariah is more respectable. Not perfect, which makes her human. But there are better singers out there.

I think Mariah is her own worse enemy. I remember the Diva thing on VH1 one year when she was trying to out-do Aretha....NO ONE outdoes Aretha. Aretha IS a diva. Aretha deserves to be a diva. Mariah still has a way to go before she has the talent and reputation to act like a diva and try to outdo someone like Aretha.
And frankly, I don't own an Aretha CD or tape. I just simply respect the woman and she has a great voice.
