Educational Treasures - Wishful Thinking

Post by pppapazo »

Now that we know what's going to be on the WDT Disney Rarities set, I was wondering what people would hope would be included on the rumored Educational Treasures set.

Personally, I'd want both Freewayphobias, Scrooge McDuck & Money, It's Tough to Be a Bird, and a complete set of Jiminy Cricket's "I'm No Fool" series, but is this enough to fill a Treasures set?

Are there other educational shorts out there that I'm not aware of, maybe something with Ludwig von Drake?

Should "money" and "bird" be considered educational titles?

Donald in Mathmagic Land and probably some other DD title(s) from the late 50s or the 60s could seem likely, but these would first and foremost be included on the final DD Treasure.

Look at various "instruction" and "public service" shorts from the 1940s - and there is enough material for more than one set. Some of this material was sampled and suggested on the "Frontlines" set.

Yes, I was looking at the education shorts from the 40's over on the "Big Cartoon Database" site. There were a lot of shorts that looked like major snooze fests, but there were certainly enough otjher really cool looking ones that you could cull a decent amount together plus the features mentioned above (i.e. "Mathmagicland") that would make a wonderful Treasure Set!

As has been stated on more threads than there are Chip N Dale cartoons, there are only a handful of Chip N Dale cartoons - nowhere near enough for even half a Treasure set. You'll have to content yourself with the Cartoon Classics collection, or else hope that they are included with future Chronological Donald editions.

I don't know if there are enough additional episodes of "Disneyland"/"Walt Disney Presents"/"Wonderful World of Color" that focus exclusively on the park for there to be another Treasure set for Disneyland USA .. are there?

No out of the question

Post by creid »

I don't an Educational Treasure is out of the questions as they want to make 8 waves of treasures leaving 6 animation treasures left to release. Only four of these six would be accounted for at this time.

1) Donald Duck #3
2) Donald Duck #4
3) Pluto #2
4) Silly Symphonies

Of the two open slots here are four ideas bouncing around this website.

1) Educational Shorts - Along with some of the ones you mentioned that produced a lot shorts in the forties & fifties. Many of these will be as interesting the importance of grain from the Front Lines but it still decent material.
2) Rareties Two - An open treasure with silents, two specials not on the current Rareties, Figaro, C&D and lots of post-Walt material as well as some of the choices you made.
3) Chip & Dale - Since most of their toons will be covered by DD sets, I really hoping against this one for all the double dipping.
4) Silents - The current rareties will probably help Disney gauge interest in this possibility. I have seen a few Alices and while interesting to watch, they have mininal interest for me. Unfortunately, there appears to rights issues with Oswald toons which I believe would be better than Alice.

I vote for DD#3 and Silly Symphonies #2 for next wave.

Like some others, I'd hope there won't be a C&D Treasure since most of C&D's appearances most likely would be covered on the DD sets anyway.

But the question still remains: What are they going to do with the handful of C&D shorts?

There are more educational shorts than any other category. And I'm A Bird, Donald in Mathmagic Land, Scrooge McDuck and Money and FreewayPhobia are not considered educational shorts. With the exception of Mathmagic Land(which is a Donald short) they are considered to be Specials(what makes up the Rarities set).

There are 155 Educational Shorts compared to mid 120s for Both Mickey and Donald. It would take about five treasures to put them all out(maybe 4 if there were no extras).

These are them.

cried - I am thinking Silly Symphonies 2 will be in the last wave. Kind of a bookend thing.

What is left from the theatrical released shorts

2 Volumes Donald Duck
2 Specials/Rarities(including People and Places)
1 Pluto
1 True Live Adventures

Three more years after this one. I am thinking Donald Duck is the lead for the next two years.

Donald V3/TLA - 2006
Donald V4/Specials V2 - 2007
Pluto/Silly Sympnonies - 2008

What are the "People and Places" shorts?

My feeling is that the following series will be:

Wave 6" Pluto V2 & Educational Treasures (mostly Jiminy's "You and Your" and "I'm No Fool" series. That's almost three hours worth of shorts)
Wave 7: Donald V3 & Silly Symphonies V2
Wave 8: Donald V3 & Disney Rarities (1960s - 2000s)

I'm confident that we'll see the True Life Adventures shorts in there somewhere, but I don't think Disney will mess with the formula of two animated volumes per set.

Wow!!! Who knew Disney was educating our population so much. Of course I saw the Freeway Goofy toons at Traffic School. Did the Disney have a crystal ball on this?

1972 History Alive! - Impeachment of A President Educational :o

That was the year of the break-in and before Watergate was blown open in 1973.

These are the non theatrical shorts. Note: The Disney War years contained no Armed Forces shorts(except in the montage). It did include most of the NFBC(National Film Board of Canada) shorts.

Wow. That's pretty thorough. I hope you won't mind answering a couple more questions - like what's an "animated classic" and how is that different from a "special?"

Animated Classics are those shorts that appeared first as part of one of Disney's 44 animated classics before being issued as a short.

1975 The Madcap Adventures of Mr. Toad Animated Classic Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
1958 The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Animated Classic Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
1971 Bongo Animated Classic Fun and Fancy Free
1954 Casey at the Bat Animated Classic Make Mine Music
1954 Johny Fedora and Alice Blue Bonnet Animated Classic Make Mine Music
1955 Peter and the Wolf Animated Classic Make Mine Music
1954 The Martins and the Coys Animated Classic Make Mine Music
1954 Two for the Record Animated Classic Make Mine Music
1954 Willie the Operatic Whale Animated Classic Make Mine Music
1955 Contrast in Rhythm Animated Classic Melody Time
1955 Johnny Appleseed Animated Classic Melody Time
1954 Little Toot Animated Classic Melody Time
1954 Once Upon A Wintertime Animated Classic Melody Time
1955 Aruerla do Brasil Animated Classic Saludos Amigos
1955 Late Tititaca Animated Classic Saludos Amigos
1955 Pedro Animated Classic Saludos Amigos
1955 The Flying Gauchito Animated Classic The Three Caballeros

Specials - are those that appeared with any sort of distinct title card. Thus, Freewayphobia is considered a Special and not a Goofy short because it lacked the Goofy title card. I am not sure I agree with that logic, but it is the logic all discographers to date have used so I can't really go against it. The definition is not always distinct. Adventures in Music appeared twice as a title card but they are generally considered Specials.

To be fair they are available to purchase for educators....
They can easily justify putting them on an educational treasures, hell they probably would double dip Donald In Mathmagicland!!

To answer an earlier question, they could make another Disneyland USA set from the TV show....
Disneyland 4th anniversary (57)
The Golden Horseshoe Revue (62)
Holidaytime at Disneyland (62)
Disneyland Goes TO The World's Fair (64)
Disneyland around the seasons (66)

and if they ever go past 66' , I'd like the one with the Osmunds and Kurt Russell seeing the Haunted Mansion for the first time!

There is also a live TV series (13 episodes) from 1962 called Meet Me At Disneyland which broadcast live performances from around the park.

Think 'Disneyland After Dark' but each segment would be it's own hour...... I would absolutley buy this if ever released on DVD.

Thanks. I didn't know that about the Animated Classics.

What are "Two for the Record" and "Contrast in Rhythm," though? I don;t recall those segments from Make Mine Music and Melody Time.
