The first time I saw Disney's Alice In Wonderland was about a year ago and I could barely keep my eyes open. I think even midway through I started fast-forwarding the VHS to get through the dull parts.
I've noticed there are a lot of Alice fans on this board. What is it that you like so much about the film? Someone please elucidate what is so great about this movie. As of this point, I don't think I will be buying the Alice Special Edition when it comes out.
Personally, I just love it because its so unique. There's no other Disney movie like it. All the characters in it are awesome, and the music is very catchy. I can see how some would consider it episodic, but I really enjoy watching it.
i've always enjoyed alice, since i was little. because of it's "episodic" nature, it definitely makes it different than the other disney releases. the story progresses exactly like a dream. how many times have you been dreaming something and then all of a sudden your dream totally changes, but somehow the actual dream is all connected even though it doesn't make any sense.. that's what alice is! i think the story was put together very well. i have a short attention span anyway, so this type of movie appeals to me. it's definitely a good movie to watch a little bit, stop it, come back to it later.. and with the amount of free time i have, which is not much, it's very convenient.
As for me, it IS about the animation more than the story. Thank Mary Blair for a lot of that. But as much as I look forward to the movie, it's the extras that I'm excited about. What I am hoping for is getting the Alice's Wonderland short, plus the One Hour in Wonderland TV special, ALL uncut. I mean, you're getting two milestones for Disney, along with a classic, if not beloved, movie AND the extras to go with that!
So, that's why I'm excited. HOPEFULLY all that will be there.
Although I love Alice I can see how many people can not.
I believe it is the episodic form that causes Alice to not be considered one of Disney's great features. Concidering the source material many out there would have hoped for better.
I think the main problem was that it seemed each team of animators was trying to out do each other's segment. This produced incredible images and rememberable moments but they played out as a bunch of shorts strung together with a minimal story line keeping them together.
The animation and story was so strong that those entire segments often would be used in many episodes of The Wonderful World of Disney, but as a movie (as a whole) it was a step-child in the animation catalog being used as a test dummy in almost all new media formats. I believe it was one of the first to be broadcast on TV and on every new at home format

In a world of my own- in my world you wouldnt say meow, you would say yes miss alice! oh but you would...... in my world...cat's and Rabbits would reside in fancy little houses.....
walrus and the carpenter-oh little oisters? a answer they came not!
Golden Afternoon- sound your A's lilie,
Painting the roses red- painting the roses red, not pink!, not green!, not aquamarine! we're painting the roses red!
Who's been painting my roses red- who's been painting my roses red? Who's been painting my roses red? who dares to paint the vulgar paint the royal flower bed? for painting my roses red someone will lose his head!
As pretty much everyone knows, Alice is my favorite Disney film. I love everything about it. The animation is arguably the most colorful the Disney studio has ever produced, and certainly the most bizarre. Although Disney's always excellent at voice casting, it really shines here. Everyone is absolutely perfect in their roles and is among Disney's best voice work. Each character is memorable and have qualities to them that makes you like them. The Cheshire Cat is laid back and only subtly mad. The Mad Hatter and the March Hare are zany and more upfront with their bizarreness. The Queen is a raging tyrant with PMS-worthy mood swings. Alice is a normal girl who's sick of a normal life, but then grows sick of a unique one. They all stand out in the Disney cannon and makes one of the best Disney ensembles ever. It's true that the film feels like a bunch of shorts strung together with one plot line, though considering that's how the book is, you can't really blame Disney. The only ways they could've fixed this would've been to a) pump up the Queen of Heart climax throughout the film so that it feels we're heading somewhere as opposed to drifting from person to person, or b) do what they did for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh by having a narrator and storybook pages linking each mini adventure. The script itself is excellent, though, with its clever puns and nutty comments. Alice isn't so much a literal book adaptation as it is an interpretation, which angered many Carroll purists during the original release. I also love how the movie's songs blend into the score, which makes for a unique listening experience, especially if you listen to the dialogue-free soundtrack. These are but a few of the reasons why I love Alice so much.
I like it because the characters are just so, well, likeable. They're each unique and funny in their own way. I don't think much about the story when I watch the movie, I just enjoy the characters. For example, the tea party is my favorite scene in the movie because of the crazy characters, the Mad Hatter and March Hare. The movie for me is mainly about the characters and their silliness.
I've never been that enamored with Alice in Wonderland either. Parts of it seem too psychadelic for me...reminds me of something the Beatles would have done during one of their drug-induced creative moments.
As for the SE, I'm pretty certain I'll still purchase it, if nothing else than for my daughter.
I never really liked this film... I like the beginning and the end but everything else I can't really get into. I'll get the Special Edition though, just because I'd like to see the extras.
I'm pro-Alice also! I can't say anything that hasn't been said already by the pro-alice people but i will add that the psychedelic aspect of it is part of what makes it so cool!
Inigo: I do not mean to pry, but you don't by any chance happen to have six fingers on your right hand?
Westley: Do you always begin conversations this way?
Inigo: You seem a decent fellow. I hate to kill you.
Westley: You seem a decent fellow. I hate to die.
i always liked alice because nothing really had to make sense...
but each scene seemed to flowed very nicely to the next one like the tears and then the bottle in the ocean part...
it appeals to the mindless side of everyone lol

I guess that is why I like it so much
I think it reminds us that we are all experiencing ourselves subjectively, and reality is just perception. The whole dream-like state of the film appeals to me. I said in the previous DISscussion thread that " The dreamlike quality of the whole production. What has often been called 'trippy' by some is a magnificent animated recreation of the disjointed images one might experience in a dream. In real life, you wouldn't follow a rabbit down a hole. in a dream, it might seem like a perfectly logical thing to do. For me, this quality adds to the sense of 'wonder'."
I am totally pro alice! It is -as some of you may know- my favorite disney movie (followed by the sword in the stone and the emperors new groove). As you can see by my three top movies, i am not the average disney movie lover...so dont take it from me about why i like alice or not.
BriarRose32 wrote:love the songs in Alice, like a World of my own and also the one song that she sings with the roses? I forget what it's called.
Weird.... those are actually the two songs i like least in the movie!

They do say, Mrs M, that verbal insults hurt more than physical pain. They are, of course, wrong, as you will soon discover when I stick this toasting fork into your head. - Blackadder the Third
I have also on many times said why I like "Alice In Wonderland" but heres one of the best reasons....
Mad Hatter:Why is a Raven like a writting desk?
Alice:Why is a Raven like a writting desk?
Mad Hatter:Whats that my dear?
Alice:I said, Why is a Raven like a writting desk?!
Mad Hatter:Why is a... WHAT!
March Hare (in a scottish accent):Dont go near her, she's stake ravin' mad!
Well it's a unique film. I saw it on network tv a few yrs back, my favorite part was when Alice woke up and you hear this song "Alice in Wonderland" I love the way they sing it I don't know why! I think her Aunt grabs her hand and drags her somewhere. I plan to buy to the SE DVD in January.
Im not getting into this but its easily the best Disney full-length production ever made. In fact, I can argue the same points about most other Disney features, in terms of cliche characters and obvious plotlines, cheesy generic themes and moral direction, etc. Alice In Wonderland is Disney's best feature work to date. It embodies the artistic creations and insight of some of Walt's lesser known and more obscure early works (Melody Time, Make Mine Music, etc) with the genius direction and scripting of features like Pinnochio, or later The Lion King, etc. It's original, fun and creative. If the Disney Studio would approach all features from a similair perspective basis, I personally think the Disney landmark corporation would be associated with something much greater and more meaningful today.
