(Why are) Collector's Editions (more expensive ?)

Why are collector editions (Tarzan, Emperor's New groove, Atlantis) More expensive than Platinum editions, or other two disc sets? Collector Editions have the same number of discs as platinum editions, masterpiece editions, yet they cost a good deal more. Why?

if i had to guess i'd say because they made fewer of them. Aslo the CE's all came out with a regular edition counterpart, whereas the platinums havn't.

I've wondered about that myself. I've come to the conclusion that it's the packaging. As you can probably tell, it's way thicker than normal DVD packaging, so I guess when people look at it, they automatically think that there's more in it, and make the price higher, even though it says "2-disc" on the packaging.

It's basically because they mostly predate the Platinum line, and were Disney's first entrance into the multi-disc set territory. Only <i>Atlantis</i> came after <i>Snow White</i> and it was the last traditional 'Collector's Edition'; the better question four years ago would have been "How come the Platinum Editions are cheaper than the CEs?" Many early adopters of the format were willing to pay up to $49.99 SRP for a single movie (as was the case for <i>A Bug's Life</i> and <i>Tarzan</i>). They went down a bit (to $39.99 SRP for <i>Dinosaur</i>, <i>The Emperor's New Groove</i>, and <i>Atlantis</i>)...but obviously in the years since, Disney has established that people like movie DVDs at a consistent $29.99 SRP regardless of the number of discs and such pricing probably allows for the greatest amount of profit for them.

They came from a time when 2 discs were not common so they were a BIG deal and were more expensive. They are now still more expensive because Disney just has not given them as many Price Drops as the standerd ones.

My local Block Buster has Disney's Dinosaur, but I couldn't believe that it was $33.00!! I never realized they were THAT exspensive..

What I find har to believe is that those movies are still sold at those prices.

Correct me if I'm wrong but basically when there are just a few of those kind of DVDS and they don't sell.... , don't they just bring down the prices to get rid of them?

...even the DMC are selling them almost for the same prices of regular DVDS...

The only reason they're more "rare" is because not as many copies were produced, because another less expensive edition was offered. They're not more expensive because they're rare, but if the one-disc editions were carrying a $29.99 SRP, how could the 2-discs not sell for more? As for the rarity factor, think about how the Collector's Gift Sets are hard to find in stores - there's a cheaper edition that most people will be happy with, and then there's a more expensive niche product for collectors.

Personally, I wish Disney had stayed with their 2-disc Collector's Edition line. Though I wasn't able to get Tarzan (hope to fix that when it's re-released, assuming the upcoming set is the same as the previous release), I do have the others and I've found their quality much more consistent in terms of supplements than the Platinum line has been; Dinosaur in particular.
