I am from Baton Rouge, it's about an hour and a half away from New Orleans. We did not get hit to bad. There is a lot of downed trees, a lot of people lost roof shingles, and a lot of people don't have power. I haven't had power for a while now so I came over to my parents house where they do have it. I was worried about our house because we just re-did the landscaping. We lost a lot of dirt in our flower beds but that can be replaced. Also, our fence is messed up pretty badly.
It is amazing to see the pictures of New Orleans on the news. I go to New Orleans about once every two months.

Several have been there are still no exact numbers as to how many people have died or how many total have been hurt. Only ball park estimates. Still now they are searching for survivors at least that is what i have seen in the news and have heard on the radio.Isidour wrote:but how many people have been victim of this deadly hurricane?

The mayor of New Orleans said in an announcment that there were hundreds perhaps, thousands dead.
In Mississippi there are well more than 100 people found dead. In Florida there are 13 found dead. In Alabama there are two found dead, while Georgia and Kentucky have found 1 dead person in each. And these are currently, not considering all the people not found dead yet.
I also can't believe all the looters. I knew it was bad after Andrew, but this is horrible. People have been stealing things from every place they can get into. A reporter interviewed a looter and asked him, "Why do you think it is ok to loot?" The looter said, "There's no one here to stop me, so it must be ok." And now these looters are looting guns and other weapons and putting people at gunpoint. A women that works in a hospital (with no power) went outside, to get fresh air, and was put at gunpoint. How can these people be stealing and possibly killing. Two of the great ten commandments. But yet it is justified, because there are very few police. NO, I don't think so. It is not justified.

This is really bad. One sports stadium is not even enough to care for all the hospital patients. The one in New Orleans is being evacuated and they're all coming here to the Astrodome. It's estimated that there are close to a million flood refugees here.
That may be an exaggeration, but I heard it somewhere.....

I live in Houston, texas and we are getting all the survivors from New Orleans. At my school we are expected to get 100+ students joing us from the New orleans area. they say that their schools aren't even expected to reopen until December the earliest. All of the homeless people living in the Superdome in New Orleans are now in transit to the Astrodome here in Houston. That will be their home from now until December. All of our hotels and streets are crowded with Louisianna license plates, and we couldnt be happier to help. We are trying our hardest to help all people who need help. Our red cross chapter here is in the process of making the ex-sports dome "Astrodome" habitable. they can't go home, they basically have to start a whole new life here. My heart goes out to all the people whose lives were ripped apart by Katrina. I will try my hardest to do as much as I can to help those who are visiting us and try to make them feel welcome.

What a moron! Dumb the police are going to see your interview on TV. This guy uses the same logic that those right wingers have about invading Iraq.castleinthesky wrote:A reporter interviewed a looter and asked him, "Why do you think it is ok to loot?" Strange how such tragedies not only bring out the best in people and pull strangers together, it also brings out the worst in the people that are ready to take advantage of any available opportunity.
As awful as the gas (and other) prices are becoming, I feel I have no right to complain. I still have a home. I still have food, clean water, and clothes. I'm not left wondering if my neighborhood even exists anymore. And I still have my loved ones. I pray for the families that have lost so much.

I would like to think these crazy are doing this looting unconciously, seriously think they are desperate, but I doubt it. New Orleans is chaos! I really hope if anyone is still there, they leave and get out, even if you are in a top story with wireless internet, it's really dangerous.
The waters are still rising. Not to mention the fact that looters now have weapons. The police force is overwhelemed, so you best bet is to just get out of there!
I can't believe there are people here worried that refugees will effect us negatively! People are so selfish!

The Mississippi coast is completely devastated. The people who lived in Gulfport and Biloxi basically have nothing to go back to. Not only have they lost their homes, they have no jobs to go back to. Tourism and the casinos were their main source of work. The casinos have been wiped out along with everything else, and tourism won't be back for a long time. Mississippi is a very poor state, and there aren't any jobs anywhere in the state for the displaced survivors to find.
The storm has caused damage through out the state. Most of the state lost power Monday. My family from Hattiesburg had to abandon their city yesterday. There's no food, no water, no power, and no gas there. Hattiesburg has completely shut down. They don't know when they will be able to go back home or to work or to school. They lost part of the roof of their house. Just take a look at the map below, and you can see the distance Hattiesburg is from the coast. There is major damage in the state from the city of Meridian down. I can't even imagine what it's like on the coast.
My cousin was watching the news reports today, and he was telling me a man in Hattiesburg shot and killed another for a bag of ice!! A BAG OF ICE!! It's just crazy.

Not to be selfish...But are they going to get the big relief fund with the celebrities talking and preforming on international TV like the people of Asia got after the tsunami? That program brought in a lot of money for them and it was wonderful. Katrina brought about a fraction of deaths compared to the tsunami but watching the Today show and seeing a family with 4 kids living in an SUV because they ran out of gas and got a flat tire, and they are but one family of thousands who are out there. No money, no food, no home. Some don't know if their family members are alive or dead. There's absolutely no communications out there, both landlines and cell phones. Last year Florida was devasted with not one, not two, not even three, but four hurricanes. And people are STILL living in FEMA trailers after over a year and they are soon to be kicked out, so they'll be homeless all over again. Does it take a terrorist attack before celebrities band together to try and get the word out worldwide that those families need our help?
Yeah, USA is one of the richest, if not the richest countries in the world, but getting enough money from the government here can be like getting blood from stone. If our country gave back as much to their own people as we did to Iraq and Afgahistan, then those families in Florida wouldn't be living in FEMA trailers for over a year. I want to see the same attention giving to the gulf coast that was destroyed by Katrina, as other large natural disasters.
I mean, what does it take for the world to notice that natural disasters happen here too?

Recalling the star-heavy telethons organized to aid victims of 9-11 and last year's tsunami tragedy, NBC, MTV and BET are among the networks spearheading benefit concerts to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
NBC Universal announced Wednesday that its event, dubbed A Concert for Hurricane Relief, will air Friday at 8 p.m. on NBC, MSNBC and CNBC. The special will broadcast live in high-definition on the East Coast from NBC's New York studios in Rockefeller Plaza and air on tape delay in the West.
Among the artists slated to perform are New Orleans natives Wynton Marsalis and Harry Connick Jr., and Tim McGraw, who hails from Stark, Louisiana. Celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio will also be on hand to plead for donations to help those in the Gulf Coast region devastated by Monday's catastrophic storm. Today show host Matt Lauer will serve as emcee
All funds raised will go to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which will provide humanitarian relief in the form of potable water, food, counseling and shelter, among other necessities. Throughout the telethon, viewers will be encouraged to donate by calling 1-800-HELP NOW or via the Web at www.redcross.org.
