No, not usually. I just bought a non-bootleg "like new" AUTHENTIC with insert and two disc Snow White platinum edition on amazon marketplace for 20 bucks. It was in really good edition, and had TWO DISCS. I think amazon marketplace is sometimes a lot better than ebay. Even though the amazon marketplace doesn't supply pictures, I think amazon marketplace is more reliable and plus, amazon gives an A to Z gurantee!Surfer Joe wrote:Now I'm noticing many listings for copies on Amazon for one disc, but I can't see where it was ever issued in this form. Like you said, though- prices that appear too good to be true- in this case, about $20- usually are.

The first disc does have a hint of gold to it, and the second disc is pure silver.RJKD23 wrote:Ah, I suppose its too late but I guess you figured it out that it's not a bootleg.
Check the first disc of Snow White. It should have a hint of gold to it, and the second disc is pure silver.
And I forgot to mention this, but I also just received my beauty and the beast DVD. It has all the inserts, discs, coupons, and even a slipcover.

How do you identify a bootleg DVD?
I use a program called a-ray software, to authenticate a dvd by checking whether its CSS encoded or not.
If your copy is not CSS encoded your dvd is most likely a bootleg copy. Below is 101 dalmatians and The Little Mermaid and according to the software, Little Mermaid is authentic and 101 Dalmatians is a bootleg.

Insert large sigh here.
According to this test, two of the four DVDs I bought off eBay are fakes. 101 Dalmatians (funnily enough, as that was one you used in your example) and Tarzan. I had my suspicions that both were fakes--they both came in the same type of white case that I have never seen a Disney title in, and they both had very glossy inserts. The disc label on 101 Dalms was also very suspect. However, they both played just fine and the video quality was okay, so I said what the heck?
And just now, as I was putting 101 Dalmatians back in the case after testing it, it cracked! Argh. Well, at least I can replace Tarzan next month with the S.E. and at least my Pinocchio and Jungle book from eBay are real! I hope I don't get screwed with the Alice in Wonderland and Dumbo I just ordered, although I'm not too worried about those two as there's no point in bootlegging them right now, as they're still both very available.
Thanks again for the name of the program to test the discs. I'll use it again.

I haven't read the whole topic (got through 4 pages), so forgive me if this was already brought up.
I know everyone knows they must be weary when purchasing a DVD online, but you should also be careful when buying in person.
When Lion King PE R1 debuted, I was ticked off that they advertised it as "the first time ever on DVD" Why? - I distinctly remember buying it for my cousin in June 2001 for a good forty bucks (CAN). It was bareboned, but presented in WS, and came with inserts and theatrical trailers. I bought it the same time I bought Lion King 2 for her. Nice label, nice packaging, looked legit. Well, when the PE arrived, I questioned Disney's deception, so I went online to check if anyone else was a bit Pd-off... it didn't take long to realize the ones I bought were fakes. I didn't want to believe that the store that sold me them knew (I hoped that it was their shipper that ripped them off). Well, I went back to the mall where I bought them from (it's a legit mall,) and it turns out the store was closed (well foreclosed) It turns out the man had been selling ALL bootlegs and was arrested for somethign or another. I think my aunt had bought 10 dvds (well 8 not including my contribution) from the vender, and ALL of them seemed legit. And after taking a few trips around my local used DVD stores, I've seen a couple of the Lion King DVD in question (I told all of the DVD stores that they were fakes, and all of them assured me that they would not sell the movie... one went as far as destroy the disc in front of me).
My point, unless you're buying from a credible source (Wal-Mart, Best Buy, some other nationwide retailer) be careful. It doesn't have to be an unknown seller, people will lie to you straight to your face.

Man, again! I just got Dumbo in the mail today and I'm 99% sure it's a fake. The disc itself looks okay, and it came shrink-wrapped and with a security seal on the top, however:
1. The shrink wrap was very hard--not like any other DVD shrink wrap I can ever remember having on a DVD. It just doesn't seem like it was factory shrink-wrapped to me.
2. The front part of the cover looks printed okay, even with a shiny red stripe where it says "60th Anniversary Edition." The spine is a little suspect on the printing quality, but still looks pretty good, but the back cover has noticeably blurry text. It's still totally readable, but comparing it to my other Disney DVDs it doesn't look up to the same printing standard.
3. The chapter insert was very glossy--not as glossy as the Tarzan and 101 Dalmatians DVDs I got, but still glossy, unlike other Disney DVDs I have.
4. The case is not like my other Disney cases--it's like the ones my fake Tarzan and 101 Dalms came in.
5. DVD Profiler can't identify it by disc ID (I know that's not a certain guarantee of fakery).
6. PowerDVD detects it as Region 1,2,3,4,5,6,All -- my real Disney DVDs are either just Region 1 or Region 1,4
7. The A-Ray scanner program doesn't detect any CSS disc encryption.
I also just noticed that the cover art is the Canadian art (has the yellow circle that says "version francaise incluse" and so the back cover doesn't have the U.S. MPAA rating, just the Canadian rating symbol. However, the disc itself has the U.S. information. Does anyone know if authentic discs sold in Canada are like that?
I'm probably going to email the seller and try to get my money back, but part of me just wants to say, "I only paid $10 for it, and it plays fine...." I guess I should get my money because I don't want to support bootlegging. This whole situation just makes me mad.
At least the Alice in Wonderland DVD I got in the mail yesterday is real! Brand new, sealed, with slipcover (though I don't really care about slipcovers) for $8.51 + shipping! At least I have some luck on eBay...

Sorta related
Maybe one of you can assist me? I'm sellinging some of my Treasures on Ebay that came in the Costco box set. As such, they have no tine and no numbered card. Is there any way to verify authenicity of my discs for my potential customers.
Here's a link to one of the auctions if you're curious:

I do have access to a digital camera to add take pictures, but I'm not real sure any of that would help anyway. Should I just expect my buyers to trust me or is there anyway I can assist them.

i definitely do NOT support piracy, but i think disney is somewhat to blame for creating a market where piracy flourishes. if they would knock it off with "the vault" then they would be getting a lot more money from customers that are willing to pay good money to get their hands on certain films.grassmonk wrote:Man, again! A - Ray's not a positive
I have a Limited Issue DVD of Little Mermaid that is quite obviously a bootleg, and it still shows up in A - Ray as having copy protection, so it is possible to add it.
BOOTLEG SELLER ON EBAY! tandvstuff
I just bought two of "The Little Mermaid" DVD's from this seller, and they are both bootlegs! Very VERY good ones, but still bootlegs. The artwork on the DVD is smooth (not rough like official DVD artwork from Disney), there was no blue Buena Vista stamp on the DVD, there were security stickers but there was no security device inside the case, and the insert/cover on the DVD case is very very sloppy and looks like it's done at home.

If the artwork is that bad they probably aren't very VERY good bootlegs.eric89 wrote:BOOTLEG SELLER ON EBAY! tandvstuff
