Disney Black Diamonds

Post by Lane4952 »

I have been collecting Disney Black Diamonds videos, and I am trying to find out if I have a complete set. I am wondering how do I find out how many videos were Black Diamonds and also how many different covers are there for each one? Please email me Lane4952@msn.com with any information. Thanks. I have quite a few duplicates.

Aladdin
Alice in Wonderland
Bambi
Beauty and the Beast
Dumbo
Fox & the Hound
Great Mouse Detective
Jungle Book
Little Mermaid
Rescuers
Rescuers Down Under

The 1993 VHS re-release of Pinocchio was also a Black Diamond. I have it, Aladdin, and Fox and the Hound from this collection.

"Black Diamond" Classics are so called because of the black diamond on the spine of the tape's clamshell case that contains the words "The Classics". These are special videos because they were the first format of Disney's animated features available for home viewing. Nope, Disney didn't do BETA.

There are 18 BDs altogether, and they are -

~Dumbo

~Bambi

~Cinderella

~Alice in Wonderland

~Peter Pan

~Lady and the Tramp

~Sleeping Beauty

~101 Dalmatians

~The Sword in the Stone

~The Jungle Book

~Robin Hood

~The Rescuers

~The Fox and the Hound

~The Great Mouse Detective

~The Little Mermaid

~The Rescuers Down Under

~Beauty and the Beast

~Aladdin

The BD videos ceased to be after Aladdin, when The Lion King was the first to have the "Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection" (with the holographic castle on the spine instead of the black diamond). All animated feature videos between 1995 and 2000 were released (or re-released) with the "Masterpiece" logo on them. After that, the infamous Gold Collection labels started.

The only video that I know of to have multiple BD covers is Dumbo. There's the common, well-known cover with a white clamshell, but there's also a rarer "pink" cover with a different design on the front (a decidedly off-model Dumbo is flying with the crows high over the circus). This comes in both a white and a black clamshell case. I got the white one off of eBay - here's an auction going on for one right now. eBay's a great place to get these BDs - I got the few that I didn't have off of eBay at reasonable prices. I think that's actually where my interest in animation started in the first place - my Disney-lovin' parents bought a lot of the BD videos when I was little - and I just kinda took the collection over from there. ;)

A great link for this kind of info is here - it has a table of all the animated features and their different release types. He doesn't have all the images of the BDs, but there is a "yes" in their place to state that that film is in that format.

Ah yes - you're right. I did a very cursory search at Google before I originally posted, and since no real info came from that (it mostly returned results from Disney sites in beta testing mode..), I just assumed they didn't do BETA. Then again - it was late, and I was tired, so that could have had something to do with it.

Tell me about it im in school fulltime going for my first Bachelors degree and it gets really late some nights for me and it always makes my thinking fuzzy because of lack of sleep and a few beers also has the same effect on me.

Im curious now how many titles Disney released in Beta format.

These (possibly excluding Return of Jafar) were not Black Diamonds-they were of no specific collection. However, "Aladdin 3" was reminiscent of the BD's in the fact that the character face on the side was in a diamond shape...

pinocchio

Post by u4ea »

hey, i'm a new member but an old disney fan.
i'm on a starwars forum and posted a question about black diamond movies and i was sent here so i joined.

i have a couple questions> who has sleeping beauty and lady and the tramp?
i have both black diamond, the insert is cut with straight corners, but the other movies i have, have rounded corners, has anyone else noticed this?
i think i only need alice and great mouse detective to complete my collection.
i also have pinocchio black diamond. the case is black and padded. i also have the masterpiece one.

i just found sleeping beauty on the weekend at a fleamarket. it cost me 20 but i've never seen it in any store so i had to grab it.

was snow white ever released with a black diamond cover?
i had no idea pinocchio existed till i found it at a video store.
thats all for now
