Horace and Clarabelle are actually in many more shorts than most people realize, I think (no offense, Smirnoffski, you may not have seen them!) because the Encyclopedia of Disney Animated Characters does a strangely incomplete job of listing them all.
Here's a more complete list (I'll need to leave it to others to fill in which short has appeared on which DVD):

Horace:
1929 THE PLOWBOY (draft horse)
1929 THE JAZZ FOOL (plays percussion solo and uses his teeth as a xylophone)
1930 THE BARNYARD CONCERT (plays cymbals with drumsticks)
1930 THE CACTUS KID (draft horse, as in The Plowboy)
1930 THE FIRE FIGHTERS (Mickey's second-in-command)
1930 THE SHINDIG (takes Clarabelle to dance on motorcycle)
1930 PIONEER DAYS (seen blowing his nose musically in a cameo appearance)
1931 THE BIRTHDAY PARTY (dances with Clarabelle in extended sequence)
1931 BLUE RHYTHM (member of band's percussion section)
1931 THE BARNYARD BROADCAST (playing musical saw)
1931 THE BEACH PARTY (in comic diving sequence)
1932 MICKEY'S REVUE (chews soda crackers to spit down as snowflakes in ballet)
1932 BARNYARD OLYMPICS (Mickey's trainer, gives him backrub prior to triathlon)
1932 TOUCHDOWN MICKEY (cheering in crowd with Mickey's friends)
1932 THE WHOOPEE PARTY (part of the kitchen help)
1933 MICKEY'S MELLERDRAMMER (acting as Simon Legree)
1933 MICKEY'S GALA PREMIERE (guest, with Clarabelle)
1934 CAMPING OUT (starring alongside Mickey, Minnie and Clarabelle)
1934 ORPHANS' BENEFIT ('muscle-horse' in pantomime)
1935 THE BAND CONCERT (drum and cymbal player; clobbers Goofy with mallet)
1935 ON ICE (brief cameo appearance with Clarabelle)
1936 MICKEY'S GRAND OPERA (orchestra member in brief cameo)
1938 BOAT BUILDERS (cameo appearance in fancy dress on podium on wharf with Minnie, in long shot only; blink and you'll miss him!)
1938 THE FOX HUNT (cameo appearance in hunting troupe)
1941 ORPHANS' BENEFIT (remake of 1934 version)
1942 SYMPHONY HOUR (trumpeter)
1942 MICKEY'S BIRTHDAY PARTY (brief appearance congratulating MM)
1983 MICKEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL (cameo appearance)
1988 WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT (cameo appearance)
1990 THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER (the Prince's pompous tutor)

Clarabelle:
1928 PLANE CRAZY (farm cow)
1929 THE PLOW BOY (farm cow)
1929 MICKEY'S CHOO-CHOO (farm cow)
1930 THE BARNYARD CONCERT (playing flute, completely naked)
1930 THE SHINDIG (1st time named; first naked, then puts on dress over udder)
1931 THE BIRTHDAY PARTY (dance sequence with Horace)
1931 BLUE RHYTHM (in band)
1931 THE BARNYARD BROADCAST (performer in radio orchestra)
1931 THE BEACH PARTY (swimmer in lengthy sequence)
1932 BARNYARD OLYMPICS (blowing party whistle to alert dazed Mickey)
1932 MICKEY'S REVUE (dancer in ballet along with identical cows)
1932 THE WHOOPEE PARTY (goosed by Goofy's party whistle, and gets revenge)
1932 TOUCHDOWN MICKEY (cheering in repeated crowd scene)
1933 MICKEY'S MELLERDRAMMER (acting as Eliza in "Uncle Tom's Cabin")
1933 YE OLDEN DAYS (as Minnie's lady-in-waiting)
1933 MICKEY'S GALA PREMIERE (guest at premiere, leaving limousine w/ Horace)
1934 CAMPING OUT (on vacation with MM, Minnie and Horace)
1934 ORPHANS' BENEFIT (ballet dancer)
1935 THE BAND CONCERT (flute-player)
1935 MICKEY'S FIRE BRIGADE (rescued in climax)
1936 MICKEY'S POLO TEAM (kisses Clark Gable in crowd)
1938 MICKEY'S AMATEURS (pianist)
1938 BOAT BUILDERS (cameo appearance in fancy dress on podium on wharf with Minnie, in long shot only; blink and you'll miss her!)
1938 THE FOX HUNT (cameo appearance in hunting troupe)
1941 ORPHANS' BENEFIT (remake of 1934 version)
1942 MICKEY'S BIRTHDAY PARTY (in dance sequence)
1942 SYMPHONY HOUR (orchestra member)
1983 MICKEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL (cameo appearance)
1988 WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT (cameo appearance)
1990 THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER (cameo appearance)

Neither Horace nor Clarabelle is really much of a minor character when you see that they actually appeared this many times...

Oh, well spotted!

I've got a couple more H&C appearances to add to the list:

Horace and Clarabelle both appear in a cameo in Traffic Troubles (1931) in a large black car with a family of pigs in the back seat (at 1:20 into the film). They're also seen in All Together (1942) in recycled animation.

Horace also has cameos in Mickey's Polo Team (1936) (in a crowd shot at 7:36) and Mickey's Amateurs (1937) (in the audience at 4:06).

Clarabelle appears in Pioneer Days (1930) alongside Horace, first dancing at the hoedown, then later crying when listening to a sad song. She's also one of the prisoners in The Chain Gang (1930); and the flute player in Mickey's Grand Opera (1936). (She's also in On Ice (1935) skating with Horace, which I think has been omitted accidentally.)

On The Fox Hunt (1938): There are six silhouettes seen at the start of the short (from right to left, they appear to be Minnie, Mickey, Clara Cluck, Horace, a mystery figure, and Goofy); but slightly later we see shadows of only five riders: Minnie, Horace, Mickey, Clara Cluck and Goofy. The one clear shot of the hunting group (at the end, when Donald catches a skunk) shows only Mickey, Minnie, Horace and Clara Cluck. Unless Clarabelle is the mystery figure at the very start (and it's too unclear to be 100% sure), I'd say this isn't a Clarabelle appearance.

And if I may weigh in on the question of Clarabelle's early appearances - I would argue that the cow(s) seen in Plane Crazy, The Plowboy and Mickey's Choo-Choo (and for that manner in The Karnival Kid, Mickey's Follies and The Jazz Fool) are not Clarabelle, partially because they don't act in a "human" manner, and partially because they are white with black patches, unlike Clarabelle, who is black all over. That said, the cow in The Barnyard Concert is white and black, but is playing the flute, which is a very Clarabelle-ish thing to do.
Oh, and there's a pure black cow (wearing a skirt) dancing with a bull in The Barn Dance which I'd put forward as an early Clarabelle-esque appearance.

Did I mention that Horace Horsecollar is my favourite Disney shorts characters? And is it also obvious that I'm slightly obsessed with Horace and Clarabelle?

Shall we start on the cameos in Ub Iwerks' shorts? Not to mention at least one possible "cameo" in a Lantz Oswald...

Great additions, ramapith and MK Sharp.

Let's not forget that Clarabelle is also in Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers. :)

Great list!

The Disney short(s) I would like to see are The Reluctant Dragon and the one about the Moose that was on after it.

A favorite of mine, so much so, that my mom and I split the cost to buy the plush reluctant dragon!

Pete is in The Chain Gang - Big Cat/Peg Leg thats him.

Horace Horsecallar is in Mickey's Fire Fighters. Clarabelle Cow also appears to be there in a crowd shot, more of a cameo but it is her.

Just read the list, taking Luke's advice, and its bloody awesome! Wonderful to see a new member, at the time, doing something this big and it was a pleasure to read! Imagine doing something like that! It would take me a lifetime working out the shorts, cameos, characters, DVDs and more! Great work Smirnoffski!

You mean like this:

Alice Solves The Puzzle (1925) - Bootleg Pete / One-Eyed Pete
Alice Stage Struck (1925) - Pete The Bear
Alice Wins The Derby (1925) - Pete The Bear
Alice Picks The Champ (1925) - Tough Pete
Alice's Tin Pony (1925) - The Bear
Alice On The Farm (1926) - The Bear
Alice's Balloon Race (1926) - The Bear
Alice's Mysterious Mystery (1926) - The Bear
Alice In The Woolly West (1926) - Bear Bandit
Alice's Spanish Guitar (1926*) - Putrid Pete
Alice's Brown Derby (1926) - The Bear
Alice The Lumber Jack (1926*) - The Bear
Alice The Golf Bug (1927*) - The Bear
Alice Foils The Pirates (1927*) - Pete
Alice's Rodeo (1927) - The Bear
Alice In The Alps (1927*) - The Bear
Alice's Auto Race (1927*) - The Bear
Alice's Knaughty Knight (1927*) - Pete The Bear
Alice's Channel Swim (1927*) - Pete The Bear
Alice In The Klondike (1927*) - Pegleg Pete The Bear
The Ocean Hop (1927) - Pete
The Banker's Daughter (1927*) - Peg Leg Pete
Harem Scarem (1927*) - Pete The Sheik
Rickety Gin (1927*) - Pete
Rival Romeos (1928) - High Hat Pete
Sagebrush Sadie (1928*) - Peg Leg Pete
Ozzie Of The Mounted (1928*) - Peg Leg Pete (alias Putrid Pete, alias Foxy Wolf)
Hungry Hoboes (1928*) - Putrid Pete
Oh, What A Knight (1928) - Pete
Sky Scrappers (1928) - Pete Wolf

The above being derived from the filmography contained in Russell Merritt's Walt In Wonderland. (Films marked * are thought lost.) I've listed how Pete was referred to in the copyright synopses, as it changed quite a bit over time - including apparent species-realignment surgery!

Of course the fascinating thing about Pete is that he also continued appearing in the Winkler Oswalds (for example: Yanky Clippers, The Lumberjack, Stars And Stripes, The Wicked West, Iceman's Luck, Nuts And Jolts, Weary Willies) and even the Lantz Oswalds. Check out the first two stills from "Hurdy Gurdy" here and the shots from "Kounty Fair", "Tramping Tramps", "Hell's Heels", "Henpecked" and "Mexico" (in the last three he even has the peg leg) here.

Moreover, Pegleg Pete, or something very close, also turns up as the villian in the 1931 Looney Tune "Big Man From The North" (not terribly surprising, as it's a partial remake of "Ozzie Of The Mounted").

It's no wonder Pete doesn't turn up in many early Disney sound films - he was too damn busy elsewhere...

Eh? I don't understand.

Unless you mean my use of the word "lost" in lieu of the probably more accurate phrase "destroyed utterly with no hope of ever being seen again". But hey, I'm an optimist...

Ichabod:

Walt Disney Fables Volumes 1 to 4 were also released in Australia (R4) exclusively through Target stores.

BVHE (Australia) registered volumes 5 and 6 with the OFLC but were never released.

Countdown to Christmas had a general release here as well.

The 1931 'The Ugly Duckling' is on the SS Treasure.

(And the 1939 variant is just 'Ugly Duckling' without the 'The'. He said, pedantically...)

Luke,

I know it was discussed whether shorts should have a link on the site like movies do. I have the Maltin book which details them all. Would you like me to put them into excel or some other format and send them to you so it could be part of the site? What information would you like about each short? Perhaps category would do it? ie Mickey/Donald/True Life/People and Places etc.
