Counterfeit?

Post by moz »

Usually I purchase all of my DVD's through reputable vendors but recently used eBay to obtain a copy of 101 Dalmations. Upon receiving the DVD after careful inspection I find myself questioning it's authenticity. The packaging and print quality is not what I would expect from Disney but then again I do not have any other earlier Disney releases to compare this to.

Can anyone provide a link or help me in authenticating this DVD? Any help much appreciated.

Hey Moz, welcome to the boards.. If possible, can you scan the disk?

There's a thread floating around here somewhere baout identifying bootlegs.. Can't do a search right now..got a meeting.. if nobody else throws it up, I'll look for it later for you.

Thanks for answering my inquiry. I've scanned the DVD as well as the inserts and box itself. Hopefully this will be enough to determine its authenticity.

Yeah,

That looks like the real deal. Be lucky that you found an authentic one.

The majority of the ones on E-Bay are bootlegs.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to look over and reply to my post. Your help is much appreciated. Now I can rest easy in knowing my daughters are watching an authentic copy of 101 Dalmations and my money isn't funding some bootleg operation.

I was so caught up just obtaining a copy for them that I never even thought to think about the piracy/bootleg factor other than to avoid a DVD from another region.

Hopefully this thread and the images will help someone else down the road in authenticating their copy and reduce the number of posts from people such as myself looking for help.

Great forum and community here!

Yep, it looks very real. BTW, WELCOME TO UD! :D

I have a Limited Issue of Lady and the Tramp that's definitely real (bought it from the Disney Store!) and there were some differences I found as compared to your 101 Dalmations, but this could be due to the fact that it is a different movie:

1) The disc on the back is black (due to the full color artwork) where DVDs are usually clear. On L&T it's reflective like the rest of the disc.
2) L&T does not have the THX certified symbol, nor does my Special Edition Peter Pan, Gold Collection Ichabod Crane and Mr. Toad, and Gold Collection Sword in the Stone. These DVDs were made after the Limited Issues and I don't know why they aren't THX certified. My Platinum SW is though. Would some Limited Issues be THX certified and some not?

Those are the only difference I see, but I don't have an actual 101 Dalmations LI copy to comapre with. If the two little things are just minor true differences, then don't worry. Aside from these two little things I'm not sure about, I think your copy is true and legit.

What was the ebay seller's feedback like? What other items is he/she selling? Usually these are other good clues about if your DVD is legit. Did you buy it used?

ETA: Good News and Bad News

:( Bad news. According to UD's very own review (http://www.ultimatedisney.com/101dalmatians.html), the 101 Dalmations Limited Issue does not say the DVD is THX certified.

:) Good News. The review I previously linked to has a picture of the cover art from Amazon. According to the DVD coverart, the DVD is THX certified.

I'm sorry. I hope this does not ruin your day. I hope it's just a printing error on the cover arts. If it is bootleg, on the bright side, if it plays fine, you can still enjoy the movie.

Howdy!

Yes, that's real! I remember looking at this DVD at my old town's library a few years ago.

And yes, other titles, like the Jungle Book, etc. are all real. As a matter of fact, I know my old Blockbuster has the DVD!

Moz, care to say who you got it from? I am looking for it as well but am very worried about Ebay, but if yours is real maybe they are a good seller.
