I agree. Aurora is a flat character. She has no personality. The 3 fairies were better developed. I didn't like this movie but I loved the songs.

i love this movie with all my heart, i think it's a prime example of what animation is capable of and i wish it got more attention for that. i also kinda wish that disney would treat it with a bit more respect... what i mean is, i wish that Aurora along with all the other princesses wouldn't be interpreted so cutesy but more atistically at timesso that people understand better how amazing these films are. i consider Sleeping Beauty to be a prime example of this!

I've always had a funny relationship with Sleeping Beauty.

When I was very little I didn't like it because Maleficent was scary. While the dragon didn't scare me at all, just seeing Maleficent herself gave me the creeps. I always watched Snow White more.

I just saw it recently and I thought it was really good but a bit overrated. Then I saw it again and I started to love it! It got #6 of the 44 classics for me.

At the current moment it's good but not great.

I mean like others said the highlight for the film was the animation! It's BEAUTIFUL! Just seeing the animation makes this film worth wild. For some reason I always liked King Hubert. He was rather amusing. His buttler that served him whine(can't think of his name at the moment) was also pretty good. Not to mention the faries are really likable and the plot is often exciting.

So what's bad about it? 1. The hero/heroine were so 2-dimensional. In fact at times you thought to yourself, this isn't Aurora's story, this is the faries' story. That how 2-dimensional they were. Also it maybe just me Maleficent in an overrated villain. Don't get me wrong, the dragon scene was one of the coolest Disney moments ever! However at times I felt she really spent alot of her time sitting around and sending people. Plus she is probably the only villain that had a chance to kill the prince and win, but yet she passed it up. Overall Eleanor Audley did bring Maleficent to life, I would just like to her do a bit more. I prefer Scar, Ursula and Jafar! :D

Overall while this is still a really good movie, there were much better films from the "Walt era" IMO. 7/10

My all-time favorite Disney movie! I love the animation... the music... the story... everything!

It was my first Disney movie. I was given the movie as a gift when I was like 4 or 5 from my aunt. She was very special to me... it was her favorite Disney film. I watched it like every day and everytime I visited her. She died from heart problems when I was 9... she was so young yet. To this day, I have the movie memorized. I had no idea it was even coming on DVD... then my parents gave me the DVD for my birthday. I love love love it!

Hmm...I haven't posted in this thread...weird?

I have pretty much always been fond of this film. This was one of the first movies that I watched/owned, and I think that Sleeping Beauty is about the only video in our house that actually came close to breaking. Admittedly, I don't like this movie as much as I used to, and I once came to the point of calling it a guilty pleasure, yet I still am rather partial to it.

I also quite like the DVD. I actually have the UK Collector's Edition and not the US Special Edition, which is just a mite inferior due to the commentary not being present as the UK edition predates the US one (I'm guessing that it hadn't been recorded until later), yet it still rocks. The galleries are especially interesting due to their size, as are the archive materials and the live action reference clip of Aurora in the woods.

One thing that has always struck me, though, is how people really regard the film as being underrated. Perhaps it may be more popular in England than in America, but I don't understand why people see it as underrated. I understand that it originally didn't do all that well, but I think that it has a solid following to sway it from being dubbed underappreciated.

I should start to do these kind of discussions again...

Sleeping Beauty... ahhh, I love it. I'm too lazy to write.

I call it one of my top three (along with The Little Mermaid, and Pocahontas) even though I think I've enjoyed others more, such as Snow White. Perhaps it is the 2-D-ness of Aurora and Phillip, even though I love them. You've gotta like the movie first and watch it a couple of times to get to love them and appreciate them boldly like when you think of fascinating characters like Ariel and Aladdin. Last time I watched it, I was thinking of how Aurora really was and therefore came to appreciate her much more than I already had. Even though her speech parts were limited to the first part of the movie, I realized she is truly a , lovely, sweet girl with pure intentions and is very innocent. Just see her when she tells the fairies about who she met in the forest. She's swept away by love so easily... she's got a romantic soul. She's also very girly - the way she talks with the animals about she meeting a prince is so girly-girl. She's also sweet and innocent; just look at the way she looks at Phillip (look at her face/expression especially) when she dances the waltz with him at the end. This is also reflected immensely right before the waltz when she runs to her mother upon arriving at the throne room. That scene always stirs me up and makes me wanna start crying.
We all know she's very graceful and insanely gorgeous, too

I know I love Sleeping Beauty a lot because, coincidentially, if I'm ever going out to buy Disney stuff, I just want Sleeping Beauty stuff more than anything else. I always want to take a Sleeping Beauty thing over others.
For example, I was looking for a children's book in Japanese to help me learn the Japanese writing, and I took Sleeping Beauty with me. I just loved it and wanted it more than the others. I actually didn't want the others... And also, even if I already have the movie, I bought it again but in Japanese to hear the movie in Japanese. It's also the only one I really want in Japanese....

My love for it before this 'character analysis', though, might have been because of my artistic nature and love for art, and the music, too. I just love the "Once Upon a Dream" waltz ending. I would love to dance (with someone I love) like that to that waltz.... It's just sooo dreamy and soo romantic and passionate.... I love the waltz...
Also, I watched it a lot when I was young. I remember one X-mas we went to a 'ranch' and brought very few movies. We watched Sleeping Beauty way too much that X-mas.

Another thing I love is the part where Aurora is lured to the spindle wheel. The music is kinda creepy. Aurora is like a zombie there, but she acts and looks so graceful nonetheless!!! It's so cool..... I love walking like "zombie Aurora".

I just loooove Sleeping Beauty....

It deserves at least a 9/10.

Well, sleeping beauty is interesting for me. I didn't actually see it until last year. But once I did, i realized what I had been missing out on. I mean, I don't think it's my FAVORITE movie, but I definitely like it a lot. Maleficent is definitely my favorite villain though, and IMO the best one out of any disney movie. Add the songs, and Briar Rose, and you have one great movie!

I think I'd have to agree with you on this one. Except maybe Little Mermaid, since that was 1989, but I guess you're including that in your Disney Rennaisance.

Sleeping Beauty is, visually the most beautiful Disney film ever produced. the equisite character designs and the lushess backgrounds make SB a wonder for the eyes, cant wait for it in high definition!
but it has weaknesses. it has the weakest plot line out of any disney movie, yes the premise of the story surounding the witche's curse and the spindle is intriguing - it's just not executed well. our heroine recieves little, if no character development and the main focus of the film features the fairies preparing a birthday surprise for Rose. on the whole its a little boring.
Having said that, it still is a powerful disney film that boasts one of the most iconic villians, a pretty suspenceful spindle scene and a beautiful score.
Ironically this movie really is a sleeping beauty!

SB is indeed "wondrous to see and glorious to hear" but the film's not without its flaws. I used to watch it everyday for months as a kid but as an adult I can totally see its shortcomings. Aurora is just a whiny, helpless, hopeless excuse for a heroine and until we finally have a prince who actually does something more than just be smitten by the princess, he barely speaks. I think Cinderella or even Snow White were much more appealing characters.

That said, the music and the animation are enough reason to watch this film and it does hold some great childhood memories for me :)

This is a classic, so that alone puts it on my all time favorites list. However, I have no problems with Sleeping Beauty's character development. She is, after all, a cartoon. :P

Now, after seeing Disney's newer releases, I have come to enjoy Sleeping Beauty even more than before. :)

Oh, I love Sleeping Beauty.
It comes under Cinderella in my top 3, because the film sags in the middle (the scene in the forest and the scenes with the kings) but the start and the end are fantastic (from the moment when the crow starts caw-ing and the music picks up, is in my opinion the best 15 minutes of a Disney film.
Maleficent ties with the Evil Queen on my favorites list (although I love maleficent's quote-tastic lines) she has a fantastic design and her transformation is terrific.

SB is a gorgeous to look at, although I've never been able to see it in it's full splendor as I only have a VHS tape (and DVD's are only available as second hand and mostly very expensive. Maybe I hire one, or I wait for a new release?)
The animation and wonderful music alone makes SB a worhty additon to a Disney collection!
Hoewever, I've never warmed so much to the main characters as I did with other princess stories such as "Cinderella" or "Snow White. But of the three of them, SB is certainly the most spectacular!
