Purchasing OOP DVD's from Blockbuster?
Hey there. I decided to rent the Beauty and the Beast PE from Blockbuster today. I looked at my reciept and it said I could own the dvd for just $14 more than i rented it for ($0.99 kid rental). Do you think it would be a good idea to keep it and get charged the purchase fee? Or would they not be able to replace it since it's no longer in curculation? If it's going to ruin other people's opportunity to rent the dvd, then i'll just wait and buy a used copy somewhere else, but it IS a legitamate purchase. What do you think???

I say go for it. It's a loophole that we all should use! Sure, the disc will be severely used and probably has a few scratches, but then you could simply do the disc replacement program that Disney has.

I don't know if it would keep others from renting it. It does, than I don't think you should do it. There are probably kids who's families missed getting the VHS and DVD and then they'll go to WDW and see Belle and the BatB show and then they'll come home to rent the movie but it's not there and will think one doesn't exist and then they won't promote it on the playground and today's generation of children will have no idea this movie exists. I don't think the world could handle such a tragedy.
But really, I'm pretty sure Blockbuster has more copies in stock where we can't see them. I mean with all the new releases there's hundreds available, but once they're no longer new releases there's only one on the shelf.
If you keep the one you rented, wouldn't you not have the original DVD case? That annoyed me when I bought used Brother Bear. It didn't have an insert nor the Amaray case.

I don't know.
If it's only once copy they have for it, I'm not sure they're going to let you do that.
I think however, that they don't mind doing that for movies they have tons of copies for and they know they only need just a couple to survive.... like my Blockbuster that carries 11 copies of Snow White.
... care to explain exactly how does it work?

Okay, to clarify a few things:
When you take it back and purchase the DVD, you get the original case if they have it (99% of the time they do)
No matter how many copies of the movie they have, they'll let you buy it, they have to, it's their policy
You get the disc replacement the same way you would any other disc. I've already done it with one Disney disc I bought in this exact same manner (Silly Symphonies)
And finally, I say go for it. It's their own stupid policy, and if they want to shoot themselves in the foot, I say let them. I've taken advantage of this policy to buy several out of print and impossible to find DVDs. So far I've purchased Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Platinum Edition, Walt Disney Treasures: Silly Symphonies, From Russia With Love, You Only Live Twice, Octopussy, Diamonds Are Forever and A View To A Kill (And possibly Mario Party 6, I've had it out for about 2 months now, so my girlfriend and I will probably just split the cost on buying it)

They usually put them up for sale. I buy used movies all the time at Blockbuster. Now that I know I can do this, I may buy the Pinocchio LI DVD my local Blockbuster has, if they'll let me. XDI mean with all the new releases there's hundreds available, but once they're no longer new releases there's only one on the shelf.

I tried my Block Buster and the cases were kind of damaged so what I may do is just go to my library and when I have to return it say I lost it. lol Rather pay the SRP then $60.00 on ebay!! lol

Aww, don't screw over the library. They don't have much money. Unlike Blockbuster.
I can't believe I never thought of using the blockbuster rental changes this way. I'm supposed to be smart. =P
