Barty can you show us a Lion King sample? I think the Monsters Inc DVD looks a lot better than all those screencaps put together.Barty wrote:http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/g.van. ... NC_DVD.htm

Click the links to compare the DVD version of Monsters, inc. with the HDTV (720p) version
I didn't make those captures, but if you guys want I can make something similar for disneys The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and Tarzan.. using the original DVD and their HDTV broadcasts.

Oke, here goes.. Note that I used the best mpeg2/dvd decoder possible for the DVD screencaps. To be able to compare the quality easier I resized (using the best resizer possible of course) the dvd screencaps (480p) to the same resolution as the HDTV caps (720p). And the DVD screencaps are PNG compressed, so any ugly thing you see IS on the dvd.

dvdjunkie, maybe it's me but it seems like you think that if you don't understand it, no one else will. A picture is a picture and if they're going to great lengths to make the picture better, I'd welcome it, not give off a rude and condescending remark.

I saw those and I found the HDTV screencaps have lighter color. Also, in the hyenas caps, if you look closely you are able to see backgrounds that appear to be black on the DVD. HDTV is easier for the eyes as I've seen. Let's just hope is even better than that.Barty wrote:Oke, here goes.. Note that I used the best mpeg2/dvd decoder possible for the DVD screencaps. I hope it improves because there is no way I am going to re-buy everything for that. I have an HDTV and it is awesome for high defination stuff, but for SD or ED it SUCKS!

and now for something slightly different
That's not Blu-ray
This is Blu-ray -- Crocodile Deathie
btw Barty, nice captures! What interpolator did you use to get the 480 DVDs to 720
For a moment there i thought you used the PAL (576!) discs!
Well nice as those captures from HDTV are, those aren't in the Blu-ray HD since they are in the smaller 720 format (720 x 1280)
Blu-ray being 1080 x 1920 progressive, is a format more than twice as big, sharp, and detailed.
Also, if you're looking at these pics on a computer monitor in your desk, chances are that your monitor is around just 20" and you're not seeing the pics at the size that they'd give you the full impact of the increased resolution, where you can see that the DVD pictures are truly fussah. Hey, even VHS looks good when seen from afar in a 13" monitor
(And heaven forbid
that you let your image viewing software resize the HD images to fit your lower resolution monitor screen therefore throwing away the high resolution too!). See them at actual size (1x), or maybe see them at 2x size standing farther away from your puter monitor. You have to scroll all around them anyway to get an idea how they look, since you can't see the whole image all at once (unless you have a 1024 x 1280 monitor or bigger! Imagine them complete and big on your wall!
Blu-ray can be watched in 100", 200", (or even more!) screens if ya wanta! Fanta Fanta
like a Cinema
Well anyway here's a couple of nearer to Blu-ray size images i've found that might give you a slighly better idea
(Ans still they are just 60% of Blu-ray, they still fall short. this is just a teaser
)
<a href="http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/2166/m9ec.jpg">858 x 1536</a>
<a href="http://img390.imageshack.us/img390/5480/l1ui.jpg">876 x 1500</a>
Actual Blu-ray sized pics will be even better
(coming soon to a UD post near you! )
i'll be back
Of course it could be that SD when seen next to HD starts to loose its sparkle...

could you clarify that? cus DVDs are SD. So they suck on your HDTV display? if SD sucks on your display, maybe its interpolator is not very goodjamminjake245 wrote:I hope it improves because there is no way I am going to re-buy everything for that. Hey, they should release DuckTales, Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles, Aladdin, Lilo and Stitch, Tale Spin etc on
Blu-Ray so they can fit more episodes on the Disc.

deathie mouse, yea i used the NTSC (480p = 720*480) version of lion king, i compared that one once with the pal dvd and the pal is sliiiiiiiiiiightly better, just slightly slightly.
As for interpolation, I've used avisynth's Lanczos4Resize, which is considered the best.
But a few other comments,
who said blu-ray means being in 1080p? These are the most commonly used high definition (HD) resolutions:
1080p (1920*1080 progressive)
1080i (1920*1080 interlaced)
720p (1280*720 progressive)
Both competing HD discs (blu-ray and hd-dvd) will most likely both support all these resolutions (not 100% sure about 1080p as there are no real tvs that can display that yet afaik). And whichever of these resolutions the movie will be in, will be decided by the movie company.
So what I am trying to say is that being on blu-ray (we already know for a fact that disney will release its HD movies on blu-ray) doesn't nessecarily mean that it is in 1080p or something, it can be in various resolutions.
The lion king HDTV broadcast happened to be in 720p, but who knows in the future we get a higher resolution for the lion king when it's released on blu-ray? Then again, maybe not (all disney HDTV broadcasts have been in 720p if I'm not mistaken)... but I certainly hope so! And of course even more difference with DVD can be seen when you compare a 480p pic with 1080p..
A footnote, DVD video is in mpeg2 and so is HDTV. Blu-ray and hd-dvd will use h.264 encoding, which allows for even better picture quality (aside from the resolution), so any movie on blu-ray will most probably look even better than their HDTV broadcasts, so the high definition screencap of lion king would look even better

Mr. Blu-sky
Thanks Barty i need to try that one out
Yes h.264 AVC (AKA mpeg4 part10) has much better compression efficiency than mpeg2! It's between 2x and 4x better, depending on if the film is a grainy-noisy source, or a pristine grainless negative-digital render respectively
To answer your question: 1080p is the native format for prerecorded movies and Sony supposedly has 1500 film masters ready in 1080p. It's up to the display to be able to present this. It's on the BR-Disc video specs. Of course it's also capable of 1080i and lower formats.
HDMI/DVI-HDCP devices know what resolution your display is and can downconvert the output accordingly.
http://www.blu-raydisc.com/assets/downl ... -12955.pdf
Oh sorry Mr.Toad, Amazing Babe just pointed me out to your question!
Top of my head it's like this:
Blu-ray:
20th Century Fox
Columbia
Tri-Star
MGM
BuenaVista
Disney
Miramax
Dimension
Lions Gate
Bandai
Universal Music Group
Apple
Dell
HP
JVC
Mitsubishi
Panasonic(Matushita)
Phillips
Pioneer
Samsung
Sanyo
Sharp
Sony
Thomson
TDK
hd-dud:
Toshiba
NEC
Warner Brothers
Universal
Paramount
New Line
Altho after Lions Gate and UMG said they were going Blu, Paramount announced it was cancelling releasing hd-duds this year, Universal scaled back the numbers of titles promised, and then Warners pushed back it's announced 2005 introduction for "next year"...

Yeah, Blu-ray is going to rock and if you don't want to spend a lot of money on a Blu-ray video disc player and you love gaming, then wait for the Playstation 3, it has incorporated a Blu-ray disc ROM and will allow playback of Blu-ray movies.
The other good side of blu-ray is computer data, when Sony initially designed the disc, they first designed it as a rewrittable disc, then they made it a read only disc and therefore eliminating the problem HD-DVDs have (dual layer 30 GB - ROM, 20 GB - Rewritable/Recordable). Whereas the Blu-ray is 23/25/27 GB per layer of rewritable bliss.
Here's a trailer in HD 1080p:
http://images.apple.com/movies/us/hd_ga ... _1080p.mov (148 Mb) System requirements Athlon XP 3000+, 512 GB RAM, at least, 128 MB Graphics Card and Quicktime 7 or Videolan (VLC). ~ Requirements found here
It's Apple's version h.264, so may be a little different to the codec Blu-ray will use. I'm pretty sure that we'll see a Cars 1080p trailer soon by the looks of this).
And this is a list of Blu-ray members, et ctera: http://www.blu-raydisc.com/Section-13469/Index.html

i'm happy to announce that Paramount just said it's supporting Blu-ray
So it's Sony-MGM-Columbia-Tristar, Disney-Miramax-Dimension-Buena Vista-Touchtone, 20th Century Fox, Lions Gate, Bandai, UMG, and now Paramount, too
vs Warner-New Line, Universal?
heh
Warner and Uni may do a similar announcement soon:
"...direction Warner has been leaning for the past week or two with a similar announcement expected this week—is simply a temporary face-saving strategy and that ultimately all studios will shift completely over to Blu-ray by launch time.
Sources say Paramount was prompted to action by the imminent announcement of Warner."

I still don't know if Blu-Ray will take off. First we have to have just one format. Blu-Ray is "winning" now, but there is still HD-DVD out there. Microsoft is said to start supporting HD-DVD. That means Windows on HD-DVD, etc... That will cause people to have HD-DVD drives in their computers then they might look into movies for it.
Yes it looks a little better but not enough for most people to go out and buy a new player and all their movies again. You will also need a HDTV to take full advantage of these formats. Also keep in mind that most people have just started building DVD collections in the past few years. DVD is still young, and it might just win the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray battle. HD-DVD/Blu-Ray may become like Laserdiscs while DVD stays the main format like VHS did for so long. I could easily see that happening.
I just hope if one of these formats take off that they are backwards compatible with DVDs. I don't want to re-buy all of my DVDs that I have now.

It doesn't look a little better. Blu-ray looks SIX times better than 16:9 coded DVD (and EIGHT times better than DVD 4:3 coded). As comparison, DVD is just THREE times better than VHS.
And apparently the other requirement is almost done: One format, since Paramount is gonna release their movies in Blu-ray, so you have 8 out of 10 movies in Blu-ray before even the format "war" launches!
(You could buy those 8 on Blu-ray and keep on buying the other 2 on plain DVD if you like. shhhh don't tell that to Time-Warner's CEO he might feel sick
)
As for Microsoft (and Intel inside don't forget) supporting hd-dud, that was just an announcement a little too little too late by Microsoft trying to make appear they're on hd-dud's side to sway the unwashed masses cus Sony PS3 is gonna be in Blu-ray while MS's xbox or whatever is not (and see that they haven't said their xbox supports hd-dud) and anyway saying Microsoft supports hd-dud means nothing, they didn't support dvd. The dvd-rom drives by manufactures did. (and as far as i know Microsoft dont make drives, no?) and the drivers writen for the dvd-rom drives did and the dvd playing software did. So same thing happens with every new optical or magnetic media, magneto optical discs, SCSI drives, Jaz drives, Zip drives, Firewire drives, USB drives, CD-R drives, CD-RAM drives, CD-ROM drives, CD-RW drives, DVD-RAM drives,DVD-ROM drives, DVD-RW drives DVD-R drives, dual layer DVD burners, hey even DVD-A has been supported, So Blu-ray drives will be made, installed and included on PCs and work there. Hey we have Sony, Dell, HP, Apple, Phillips, TDK, etc etc behind it. Microsoft "support"? We don't need no stinkin Microsoft support around here!
Just a markerting ploy at the last minute by MS against PS3 as I said. Hey, like saying oh yeah, we support WMA but we dont't like iPods or iTunes.
they are backwards compatible!!!!!! Your DVDs won't desintegrate or self destruct the moment you get the Blu-ray DVD Player box inside your front door in a schyzo mass suicide with sparks flying all around your room, aluminium melting, and the voice of Satan saying you were a naughty boy, youve gone to the Dark Side. meez!
You will still be able to play them!
If looking at pictures 8 times better than you have now makes you do something you don't wanna do, just watch with eyes closed!

nobody made me buy my VHS tapes again when DVDs came out (of course i didn't have any...
) (I rebought some Laserdiscs of movies i really liked
)
btw, did i mention that Blu-ray has 8 channels of UNCOMPRESSED HI-REZ audio that has 50 times more musical info than DolbyDigital?
love is old love is new

Actually I think Paramount are doing both formats now, but I think they'll end up dropping HD-DVD in the end anyway. It may turn out just like UMD vs Mini-DVD, Time Warner is the only one supporting Mini-DVD, while Paramount and Universal dropped it and went for UMD in the portable media world.deathie mouse wrote: vs Warner-New Line, Universal?

Mircosoft isn't going to put Windows on HD-DVD any time soon, Windows Vista (formally Longhorn) will be coming out on DVD (with the option of buying Windows on multiple CDs probably). It's not really logical either, with PC some people still buy games like Half-life 2 and Battlefield 2 in multiple CD packs instead of a single DVD. The adaption of next generation optical drives (for computers) will take longer to catch on than the home entertainment component side of it.DarthPrime wrote:Microsoft is said to start supporting HD-DVD. The other thing is that you'll still be able to install a Blu-ray drive in your computer and use it under Windows, you may just have to install drivers and that.
Both Blu-ray and HD-DVD players will be able to to play DVD and CD. Even the Playstation 3 will be able to Blu-ray, DVD and CD.
In reality we just have to wait and see what happens, to find out which catches on. Who would've believed the Titanic was going to sink on its first journey.
Edit note: Looks like Deathie has made some of my points redundant.
Oh yeah, pure 8 channel audio. Dolby has come out with a 13 channel audio system for movies (not yet available), which may be going over the top, then again in the future: "What it only has 13 channels? That is so old, now a days 25 channels is standard. Stop living in the past."

I still find it hard to believe that there will be more difference between DVD and Blu-Ray than there was between VHS and DVD. 6 times difference? That would be nice, but will people without a HDTV see any benefit to the new format? The pictures posted I can see a slight difference. It looks clearer/sharper/etc..., but not the huge step that I thought would happen after DVD.
Nice to know they are going to be backwards compatible. I didn't know that. I had heard rumors that HD-DVD might be, but nothing on Blu-Ray.

Just going to say that I looked at the LK screen captures and to me there's no "big difference" at all. I'm on a LCD monitor as well so theoretically I should see something....but I really don't. Certainly will have to wait to purchase any of this "upgraded" technology for sure.

What I saw was simply a much sharper image on the HDTV broadcast as opposed to the DVD. And the colors on the HDTV broadcast seemed a little more vibrant and brighter.Roger Rabbit wrote:Just going to say that I looked at the LK screen captures and to me there's no "big difference" at all. Ok, yes I do agree...the HDTV images were a bit brighter but that doesn't necessarily mean sharper. But that's not a "big difference" to me. Also, what you may not know (and this is just because I've never really talked to many here yet) but my eyesight is no better than 20/40 so sharpness isn't something I easily detect, even with glasses.Escapay wrote:What I saw was simply a much sharper image on the HDTV broadcast as opposed to the DVD.
