Don't mean to be rude, but the "I've already got them on video" attitude isn't going to get you far DVD-wise. I used to go through this phase, and I missed out on some DVDs while they were still in print (Fantasia being suspect here). You'll feel really bad that you missed out on some when you could have bought them.
You should still be able to find The Lion King (it went out of print a few weeks ago but is probably still in a number of shops) and Aladdin and Bambi are also out at the moment. Seriously, go and buy them. Plus, with videos, on a number of the platinum films (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King and Lady and the Tramp), you're losing picture thanks to the pan and scan process of converting widescreen (DVD and cinema) to fullscreen (TV). Take a look in this picture and you'll understand (top being widescreen, bottom being fullscreen):
I don't think videos are all that good. Buy the currently available platinums now or you'll be kicking yourself wishing you bought them when they're only available on E-Bay, with many being bootlegs.
Hmm...good points here. While I understand your point, "Aladdin" and "Bambi" aren't my favorite Disney movies and my budget is kinda tight right now seeing that I just bought birthday presents for my friends and the four gifts that I got cost $60 total. Plus I really, really, really, really want to get the third season of "7th Heaven" when it comes out in June. A LOT more than I want to purchase "Aladdin" which I haven't seen in about six years.
I am now considering getting "Cinderella" though, which is a very different state of mind than I was in like three hours ago.

I am totally 100% right there with you. If buying these DVDs arent your top priority right now then dont sweat it. Spend your money on something you will get alot of use out of. I just think what Wonderlicious is trying to say is that if you dont get the DVDs like The Lion King, Aladdin, and even Bambi right now or very soon they'll be gone before you know it. And trust me, if you are any kind of fan of Disney you will regret not having them because once they are gone they are gone. I mean look how long it took Disney to finally release them on DVD.
Thanks everybody for the opinion and support (I don't know if that's the right word, but anyway...). "The Little Mermaid," "Lady and the Tramp" and possibly "Cinderella" are now on my list of things I want to buy.
I wish I had gotten Beauty and the Beast when it came out, Little Mermiad & Jungle Book, but I was oblivious to DVD's back then as DVD players were new and it took me another 2 years to get one.
Nothing too extraordinary except for one thing: Disney is now acknowledging this as a 2-Disc Platinum Edition instead of 2-Disc Special Edition. It's nice that they've finally come to their senses (how can a movie be two different editions on the same thing?). I'm curious to see how they'll approach this on the cover art, though. Usually, the top banner says "Platinum Edition" while the film's logo has "2-Disc Special Edition" underneath it (with the exceptions of Snow White and Beauty and the Beast). So either they'll be putting "2-Disc Platinum Edition" on the top banner (a first) and leave the logo alone (ala Snow White), or they're going to put "Platinum Edition" on the top banner (as always) and "2-Disc Set" underneath the logo (ala Pocahontas). I'd personally prefer the latter so that the Platinums all have consistant banners (well, outsideof color changes...). This makes me wonder what they'll put on the spine, though: just the film's title like with Snow White, or the title and Platinum Edition (which would be the first time ever).
I just realized I made an entire paragraph about what this DVD is called...So sad.
Lol... The restoration looks like top notch stuff! This is one of my childhood favourites. I'll be buying this the moment it comes out... With or without the Platinum title glued all over it.

Actually, we should be glad that The Little Mermaid will be released soon.
Since given the fact that it is the last of the "modern" and most popular ones, Disney could have chose to release it last to make sure the others sell as well as this one will be.
Here's a possibility why it may be getting the "Platinum" banner only...
Earlier in the thread, ichabod wrote:I hadn't actually watched the film in 2 years, so I will really look forward to it, and because LatT is usually consider to be more of an 'adult' movie, perhaps it will be devoid of the Bambi 'fluff' a.k.a 'crap'.
Since this is the first Disney release since Snow White to just be called a platinum edition (from looking at the trailer so far, that is), could Disney be making a super lovely edition like Snow White (aka little kid's material and almost all collector aimed stuff)? Some were annoyed by the sheer amount of fluff on platinums that were labeled "special edition" as well as "platinum", but since the set is only called "platinum edition" from the trailer, could ichabod's predictions be coming true?
Well, first off I haven't seen L&TT in forever, and I like it so I will probably at least rent this (maybe I'll own it who knows?). First off, I'm almost mad because it seems it's getting treated specially, what with it being called a Platinum Edition in the trailer and it perhaps having more substantial material than the fluffy other Platinums. If it gets treated better than Cinderella I will certainly be a little mad, but if it's true that L&TT is considered a more adult Disney movie then maybe I can't blame them.
As for the four pictures from the trailer: The retsoration not only looks AMAZING but it's amazing that they put footage of the restoration in this trailer in first place! And this is it's first trailer! What the heck?! I hope that Cinderella gets a new trailer which shows it's restoration (which I predict will be on the Lilo and Stitch 2 DVD).
Lady and the Tramp looks like it will be awesome! The restoration really looks incredible!
You know what I wished they do with the DVD.....Have the ASPCA or HSUS have a message about adopting from shelters and use the video of the pound with the sad puppies...it would be SO perfect.

That's possible, but I doubt it only because Cinderella and Bambi have very little fluff (I disagree with Ichabod on the Bambi point). Snow White was simply called Platinum because, well, it was. B&tB had the Special Edition under the title because it referred to the cut of the film, not the DVD. The same originally applied to The Lion King (because of "Morning Report"), but then Disney at the last minute added a "2-Disc" in front of the "Special Edition" title, hence referring to the DVD. This stuck all the way through Cinderella. Now it seems, with Lady and the Tramp, Disney's still eager to promote the fact that it's a 2-Disc, but they've dropped "Special Edition" title completely, unless the trailer's just whacked out. You never know with Disney...
Siren: The DVD having something from ASPCA or HSUS would be a very nice idea. Has a Disney DVD done anything like that before?
Disneykid: I thought Cinderella had a lot of fluff because of the House of Royalty, ESPN, Princess Pajama Jam, and DVD-ROM Dream Makover stuff. You are probably right about Lady and The Tramp's DVD, though. You wrote a good history of how the titles of the DVDs changed, and why there was inconsistency. Plus, you are very right in that you never know with Disney. You never know.
Disney Duster>Not really. Though on 102 Dalmations DVD there was a little video on there for kids, narrated by the parrot that talked about how not all breeds are for everyone and before they get a dog, the parents should do research, and to consider adopting a dog.
Disney did it because they got a LOT of letters from many animal welfare groups and dalmation rescues urging Disney to stop making the dalmation movies or at least to educate the public, because everytime a dalmation movie was released, hundreds of dalmations were bought and then dumped on them 6 months to a year later after the movies were released.
Most people wanted a dalmation because of those movies. And they bought one for $100s and found out they are a high energy, high strung dog that often goes deaf and needs even more training because of it.
Yeah, and they don't seem like the most friendly dogs out there. I've always been confused about this movie because I know it first came out in the 60's and I heard under a different studio or something, but then Disney re-released it in the 90's. I have no idea what the story is so any information would be GREAT. Hopefully when the Platinum Edition comes out we will also get a box set of 101 Dalmations: The Series.
