The end of an era!! (No VHS for Herbie: Fully Loaded)

When Herbie: Fully Loaded makes its debut this fall, it will be in digital only. NO VHS copies will be produced!! Disney is one of the last major studios to produce its movies in both the DVD and VHS format. This could indicate a change in how they release movies, and very well may be the death knell for VHS. If Disney stops producing VHS copies, other studios are almost certain to follow suit. If you recall, DVD didn't really take off until Disney jumped on board.

Wow thats kind of sad I grew up on VHS copies of Disney movies. But I do love my DVDs although honestley I still cant see it happening its just so werid but I guess it was coming all along.

In February Wal-Mart will no longer sell VHS' to make room for more DVDs - -Best buy already has.

If you read the trade papers, Blockbuster Video will no longer rent VHS tapes after September 1, 2005 and Hollywood Video is following suit on October 1, 2005.

We all knew that it was coming, but some of us were still clinging to the hope that Disney would be the lone holdout for a lot longer. I probably have over two hundred Disney VHS tapes and even some Beta ones, and now they will just be a memory. I have replaced them with DVD copies, but it is just those great big clamshell boxes with those beautiful Disney artworks that will be missed.

That's sad for people like my grandma, who is too old to figure out how to use a dvd player and relies on her VHS machine and likes to rent VHS movies. We've tried to help her learn a dvd player, but she refuses.

Me, I say that's fine, let them no longer have VHS's. Next to nobody rents them anyways, at least as far as I can tell. DVD has all the bonus features and the picture is usually better than it was on VHS.

I have to agree, we must have saw it coming but honestly, who has bought a VHS in the past year? Who has bought a DVD in the past year? My hand is up for DVD. The new PSP format of the small disc is starting to take off but I doubt that I'll jump on board. The video player itself is hundreds of dollars, im not sure about the discs... but i'm pretty sure Pacifier was released on PSP, wasnt it?
Next will be blue-ray i guess. I hope to God that they start sealing the bottom side of the disc with a thick plastic so that our DVD's will stop skipping and freezing due to minor imperfections or scratches. I think they've been sealing the PSP discs so that's a good sign.
Anyway, i guess we'll jus have to hope for the best for whatver format they want to put on our shelves in the next few years...

I don't mind it for the new release but what worries me is that there are still a lot of old VHS's that have yet to see a release on DVD. Many Disney home video releases from the 80's haven't been redone in VHS format yet.

On the plus side however, now is the time to go those stores and buy many of those VHS' off their hands fairly cheap.

This isn't the first Disney title to be released only to DVD, there are tons of others. The Treasure tins have only been released to DVD for years. In 2005, there have been over 25 titles on DVD only, as seen here:<p><a href="http://disneyvideos.disney.go.com/calen ... tml</a></p>

I know we can all read into it that she means VHS where she says DVD, but c'mon, we all need to make sure our posts are grammatically correct before submitting them.....................

It is a sad day indeed for those who refuse to join the 21st Century. DVD's are here to stay unlike 45 RPM and LP records which were replaced with CD's.

About the scratching and skipping thing.......you need to learn to take better care of your DVD's. I have DVD's that I bought the first day they were released to the public almost 20 years ago, (I know it wasn't twenty years ago, but it was a long time ago) and they don't skip or have any scratches. It is all in the care. They don't belong stacked on top of one another out of their protective case, and they don't belong left in a player after using them. They do collect dust and dust leads to scratches, you have to make some effort to keep them clean, and keep them out of harm's way.

The discs cost $15-35 each as I have seen and not the Pacifier was not released on PSP.

Hmmm... i guess that's kinda sad. I always loved those huge clamshell cases. I'm only a teenager, and I'm still gonna miss VHS's in a way. I mean, not everyone even has a DVD player, talking mostly about college kids. But I guess you could still watch DVD's on computers, etc.

I guess in a way, it's a good thing. But I'll still collect Disney VHS's.

Well when I worked @ Blockbuster we were trying to sale them as preivously viewed and a lot of them believe it or not sold. But like really reall old ones maybe from the end of the 80s we took a hammer too and just broke.

I know Blockbuster wont be renting out VHS anymore or at leas thats what they say, but believe it or not they rent out the fastest and a lot of people esepcial the elderly folks get so angry if you dont have the movie on VHS. I mean I am all for technology , but how I am supposet to tell someone like that get with the 21st century and buy a freaking DVD player gosh. Thats not really fair either. We might as well say tio them god die already and face it the stuff you know how to use is exstinct and well you should be too. I mean come on I would hope no one here would say anything like that to elderly person. So in conclusion to my rant I am not against there not being anymore VHS , but it does make me sad for those who cant make the change. , but I guess that is how the cookie crumbles.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing.

This reminds me of the minor uproar that was caused when they decided not to include floppy drives on computers anymore. People wanted them, simply because they were used to having it there, even though they'd never use them. Same with VHS. I'm guessing there's people who collect DVDs, but probably still have the old VHS copy (we still do, lol). Most of our VHS's are upgraded to DVDs, except for the ones still yet to be released on DVD and those where we're waiting for a better release.

To me, VHS is practically now what Beta was about 25 years ago. DVD has come along and is now the predominant format for all video releases, and it's easy to see why. Besides excellent video and sound, bonus features and as many subtitle languages as you can think of, DVDs are smaller, easier to deal with and will eventually become cheap. Plus, DVDs are predominantly widescreen, which is a MASSIVE plus.
