New Here and have Questions!!

Post by MomToMyKids »

Hi everyone.....I am new here and have some questions for all of you experts!!

I am relatively new to collecting Disney DVDs. I just started when my daughter was 1 and started getting interested in movies. Now I am somewhat obscessed and my husband thinks I am a freak.

Now my questions....

My neighbor borrowed my Tarzan DVD and now it seems to have vanished. I know it is out of print, but there are tons on Amazon and Ebay. I am confused on the import, not imported, insert, no insert, etc. What is the scoop on all of that?

Also, I buy several of my DVDs at Costco Wholesale Club. I have noticed that the ones I have bought there in the last year....like Jungle Book 2, Belle's Magical World and Piglet's Big Movie did not come with Chapter insert information. What is up with that?

Also.....any tips for cleaning DVDs? My neighbor borrowed Belle's Magical World and now it seems messed up. There are visible scratches on the back of it. Her borrowing priveleges are now cut off!!!

Thanks in Advance. I look forward to learning from all of you!!

Welcome, Mom!
And I would have cut the neighbor off after the Tarzan fiasco...the scratches on the 2nd disc warrant an internal investigation, IMO.

As for the whole import thing, well, unfortunately there are a lot of bootleggers associated with imports. I would stay away from international auctions if I were you to avoid this all together. If you're ever in doubt about an auction simply link to the auction here and ask us to look at the specs and we'll give you our input. Anything you find domestically WILL have an insert and that should be your best indication that it is a legit copy. Recently Disney has been releasing titles withou inserts but hopefully that was a short-lived trend.

Usually, if you see an online listing for a DVD that says any of the following, it's a red flag for BOOTLEG. I'd be very cautious about trusting listings that you see the following in:
REGION 0/IMPORT
NO CHAPTER INSERT/MISSING INSERT
etc.

Earlier this year, Disney stopped puting inserts in some of their new releases, iincluding Jungle Book 2 and Piglet's Big Movie. People complained, and Disney has now said that all future DVD titles will contain a chapter insert, but there's nothing wrong with the copies you got.

Sounds like someone's out of the Circle of Trust! :o

Like Jake and Indy said, "Import", "Asia", "Region 0", "No Insert" are all commonly-used phrases of the Disney bootleg market. You may have to pay more for a legitimate copy, but it's well worth it, as Disney's actually getting the money and not some pirate. There are some legitimate Disney DVDs that don't have inserts but like Jake said, those would be the ones released earlier this year when Disney temporarily did away with them to save a few cents - The Rescuers, The Jungle Book 2, Piglet's Big Movie, The Love Bug, etc.

As for cleaning discs, I used to have these CD/DVD Wipes that you can get from your typical office supplies store like Office Max. They're kinda moist, and if you wipe straight from the inside of the disc to the outer edge, making sure not to wipe round the disc...that often helps take care of normal wear-and-tear. If it doesn't do the trick, Disney will replace your disc for a cost. (I don't remember what it is, but it's less than buying a new DVD.)

Welcome to the forum! :eye:

Ahh yes, I forgot about that. They will replace your Disc for $10.
You'll need to register your Disney DVD collection first, but it's well worth the time to do so. I've posted the link below to the Disney site where you can register your DVDs:

You can also try the Skip Doctor to repair your "neighbor-damaged" discs. It cleans off not only dirt and smudges, but can fix and improve light scratches, too! :)

I've had good experience with it myself, and most tech retail places (like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.) sell it for about $20+. There's even an automatic motorized version, as well!
