DuckTales Is Coming

I just read a post over at Home Theater Forum that said DuckTales is in the works. This is the best news of the day.

Hopefully this means the movie is finally coming.

Well that's great news if it's true, but there isn't any direct source given, or any details, so I'd classify this in the "Rumors" column for right now. Something to be hopeful for, though.

There's also a lot of talk about "Blossom" and other BV TV shows being distributed by Shout! on that forum. I guess that could be true, but I have a hard time believing that Disney wouldn't want to release "Blossom" themselves.

Ducktales was a bigger hit for Disney than the other shows. Since it was the first(and only) Disney animated t.v. show to have 100 episodes. It also was the first Disney show to have an animated movie(Treasure of the Lost Lamp). So while the other shows were popular, none came to be quite as popular as Ducktales!

I hope this rumor is true, because if it is, it looks like God has answered our prays!

Well, you sort of answered your own question. It simply is more popular. There's no other real explanation besides it. I, personally, hope this is true, and that the show receives far better DVD treatment than what my favorite Disney series (The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh) got...

Not ture! The Wuzzles and Gummi Bears came in 1985. Ducktales came in 1987!

Ah, you're right- I got it mixed up with Gummi Bears... although I think DuckTales was the first to air daily or something like that. Or maybe I'm just completely off.

OH MY GOD...! I just realized that the show I keep thinking about every time someone else is talking about DuckTails and I thought I was talking about the same show... was Darkwing Duck. I'm not kidding! There were so many damn duck shows in the late 80s and early 90s, it's hard to keep track: Duckula, Darkwing Duck, DuckTails...

Now that I think of it, I barely remember DuckTails. I remember one episode about a satelite dish, that's it!

The Wuzzles and Gummi Bears came in 1985 on NBC mornings and Ducktales came in 1987 in syndication run weekdays. Then Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers pair in a hour with Ducktails in 1989 in synidication run weekday.
I hope the rumor is true about DuckTails on DVD.

However, IMO, I'd rather see Darkwing Duck or Talespin on DVD first. How I yearn for their official releases (and not the Ebay bootleg ones).

Although this is good news, I have a funny feeling that it'll come in little mix and match DVDs like how The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh videos were released in the non Region 1 countries. Needless to say, I'm glad that Duck Tales may be coming to DVD in any form (well, I mean the series, as I can easily buy the movie, which has been released in Region 2 already).

^ Six months I might've agreed with you, and it still may be the case, but the TV-on-DVD market is booming like never before, at least in the US. Best Buy has actually gone so far as to expand their TV section and move it to the front of the DVD sections in their stores. I can see Disney wanting in on a bigger piece of that action. I'm still a little surprised that they aren't releasing more at one time than they are. I mean, look at Warner.

Yeah I was surprised too that Disney hasn't put more of their foot in the DVD waters. You're right about Warner for some reason after Batman TAS came out I thought this is going to be so popular everyone is going to start releasing their cartoons and unfortantly it never exploded like I thought it would .. It would be awesome if Disney now just goes all out, first DuckTales then Chip N Dale, TaleSpin, Darkwing Duck, The Wuzzles, Gummi Bears, Goof Troop, Bonkers, Raw Toonage etc.

And I'd love if they did season sets for their spin-offs like Alladdin, Little Mermaid, Hercules.

This is incredible news ... (if it's absolutely true) ...

I too am surprised that Disney hasn't jumped on the TV on DVD bandwagon ... Most of their television shows ... and animated serials are classic ...

I for one am a huge fan of the "Disney Afternoon" cartoons ...

I remember when Toon Disney used to show Ducktales ... Chip n' Dale ... Tale Spin ... Wuzzles ... Gummi Bears during the day ... Now they save the daytime for cartoons which can be found on the Disney Channel ... and save for the 2-5 am hours for Classic cartoons ...

I could see Disney releasing Seasons sets ... or Partial season sets (Vol 1, 2, etc) ... and even trying to capitalize on the family market by releasing Volumized Compilations of the various cartoons ...

I hope the Ducktales news is true ...

As for the Blossom news ... I would be surprised that Disney would allow other companies distribution rights for their own shows ... Especially shows that would sell well with the Disney DVD name next to them ...

If it's true it leaves me with fewer shows i ahve to wait for. I hope it is, but I won't hold my breathe.

As for Ducktales popularity i think it was a combination of things. It wasn't really cutesy like Gummi Bears and other 80's cartoons, it didn't underestimate its audiences intelligence and really if you inserted people in place of ducks the outline works about as well as any show on tv.

The animation was top notch as disney had a purpose other than pure profit at the time. The show was actually created with the intention of putting disney back on the cartoon map, and they expected to lose some money on the project. The scripts were as good as any adventure movie and the characters were actually developed. Viewers got backgrounds and histories and they got to see character souls (something often missing from tv).

Ducktales brought the afternoon cartoon to a higher level, before the rest of the disney afternoon. From a pure animation standpoint i think Ducktales and Talespin stand out amongst the slightly more cartoony feels of Chip N' Dale and the ever more cartoonier feels of Goof Troop, Darkwing Duck and Bonkers.

If Ducktales had been drawn like Darkwing duck i dont think it would have made as much of an impact but it really was amazing for the time.

Ducktales also had one indeniable feature for anyone who watches animation. With the exception of some musical choices, the cartoon doesn't date itself very badly. Like batman it exists in a world that has elements from several time periods so that helps it remain fairly fresh.

The tv show market right now makes me laugh. Some shows are out that make me scratch my head while other classics aren't.

They could knock on Anchor Bay's door again. Though Anchor Bay is doing most of their dealings with 20th Century Fox now, Shout! Factory is another viable company. I would also recommend Ventura, who are releasing The Cosby Show and A Different World this year.
