TLK1.5 Plot Revealed!

Post by Jake Lipson »

IGN DVD tells me there's one more extra inside The Lion King DVD that will be a pleasnt suprise to many -- an advance sneak peak at the story for The Lion King 1 1/2! Quoting from their review of the original Lion King:
"The two-disc set comes in an Amaray case with an add-a-page flip holder for the first disc. There is also a mini-storybook for The Lion King 1 1/2, a direct-to-video sequel featuring Timon and Pumbaa, with coupons for all things Disney. There is also a seven page insert booklet that lists the features on the discs and helps navigate through it all.
I remember obtaining a simmilar little storybook for "The Return of Jafar" pre-release, much to my suprise. This should be a pleasnt little bonus for TLK fanatics. The wait is almost over!!

That's pretty cool. I wonder why that didn't turn up in the pics of the box set - they had the DVD case open, showing the insert, but not this storybook.

Since TLK 1.5 should be going to the presses relatively soon, I guess a press release isn't too far off. Even as distant as "February 10, 2004" sounds. I'm in no hurry for February 2004, but I'm kind of interested in this. Storybook sounds neat.

I wouldn't be suprised if Disney put the press release up for grabs on October 7th, so that newspapers and magazines, etc. which are sure to do a feature on the TLK DVD can mention TLK 1.5.

Press release is out already--in print, anyway.

Please excuse any typos - I'm doing this kind of fast...

BURBANK, Calif. September 11, 2003 - Hilarity Reigns in the all-new movie THE LION KING 1 1/2 starring Timon and his windy pal Pumbaa. You think you know the story of the Lion King - but you don't know the half of it! Now, see how things really happened - according to Timon & Pumbaa's perspective - in this rip-roaringly funny story within the story of THE LION KING. Go back before the beginning of THE LION KING to see how it all started. The truth about some "passed" events - such as when King Mufasa introduced his young heir to the animal kingdom - will be revealed. Let's just say there was something behind that dramatic moment when all the animals bowed to their new ruler!

Nathan Lane and all your favorite voice actors return for this all-new, hysterical musical tale- and get ready to meet colorful new characters like Timon's Ma and Uncle Max (voiced by Jerry Stiller). It's king-sized fun with Timon & Pumbaa, the greatest unsung heroes of the savanna. They were there...and they ain't lion!

BONUS FEATURES:
Disc 1:
The Movie
Deleted Scenes
Hidden Mickey Hunt (Find the secretly embedded Mickeys throughout the movie and track them with your remote as you watch)

Disc 2:
Who Wants to Be King of the Jungle? (Meredith Viera hosts a jungle version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire")
Timon & Pumbaa's Virtual Safari 1.5
The Making of THE LION KING 1.5
Timon: Beyond the Legend
Nathan Lane Audio Outtakes (Personally, I'm looking forward to this one!)
Name that Character
Music Videos
And More!
Gantu: "You're foul! You're Flawed!"

Stitch: "Also cute and FLUFFY!"

I wasn't aware that The Lion King 1 1/2 will contain 2 disks. :? It's odd that Disney didn't mention any technical specifications or the Febuary 10 release date.

That is a joke.

These were tentative specs mentioned in some article on TLK a while back, which Luke copied into TLK1.5's listing on the upcoming releases page: deleted scenes, Timon - The Early Years mockumentary,
Disney's Funniest Moments, music videos, 2 games.

As this press release does not contain all of these, I'm sure it's a joke like the very unamusing Aladdin press release. And there's absolutely no way anyone at Disney would give a direct-to-video sequel a 2-disc release, even if it is following up Lion King.

Actually, I think it very likely could be legit, based on some of Inga's scoops lately.

Thanks for the information Inga Tu Schmista. I'm just suprised that Disney plans to make TLK 1 1/2 into a 2 disc set. :) Cinderella 2 and 101 Dalmations 2 didn't recieve the same treatment.

If this is true - and I'm still a bit skeptical - it's great news and speaks to the quality of the movie, if they're giving it a double-disc set, as well as virtually confirming that TLK2 will also be upped to 2 disc when it gets a reissue next year. I just hope this does not become a pattern for cheapquels -- Lord knows Pocahontas II and Return of Jafar, to name a few, don't deserve double-disc sets when so many animated classics are MIA on DVD. After all the classics are taken care of, okay, but I'd rather they spend their time giving us the original theatrical cut of Aladdin than give all the cheapquels 2-disc treatment.

Oh, yeah, and if this is indeed the truth, then Brother Bear better be a two-disc set, too. They've got no excuse for giving the DTV stuff (even the really good Lion King DTV stuff) 2-disc sets if their animated classics don't have them too.

It absolutely infuriates me that they're making it a double-disc special edition and leaving off the pilot episode of Timon & Pumbaa. I mean, seriously, if there ever was a home for these on DVD, it would be as a part of the TLK1.5 extras. :(

If they do start making 2-Discers for the cheapquels, I bet the special features are going to be even more fluffy than the Platinums, and will probably contain half the extras. The 2-Disc label is probably just a gimmick to make the consumer think there's more stuff on the DVD than there really is.

Yup!

Disc 1 - "Family Friendly" Disc (Fullscreen Versions of the "original theatrical cut" and the special edition)

Disc 2 - "Enthusiasts Only" Disc (Widescreen Versions of the "original theatrical cut" and the special edition)

Disc 3 - Games, Games, Games . . . and an all-new Music Video!

Here's a shot of the cover art. I don't know where wolfinthebag.net got it from. The final art should be out in a few weeks or months.
