I want to rent a pig! I'm gonna ask that when we go! Pigs! Lechon! Pigs! I hope it's not Miss Piggy...

Have fun in DL Luke and take lots of picks of the castle and parade and new fireworks and share them with us if it's not too much bandwidth! Oh and make sure to see Snow White: An Enchanting New Musical (and take lots of pics!) and if you go to Disney California Adventure, see Aladdin Musical Spectacular (and take lots of pics!). If you are shopping for a Digi camera my best advice is get one with at least 4 megapixels and if you are on a budget, at least 3 megapixels. Here is a pic with 3 megapixels:

Image

lol, srry for getting off topic.

My advice for MK visitors, take lots of pictures because you'll be thankful 2 months later.

Inspired by my brother and Sunset Girl's request, here are some of Kram Nebuer's Pictoral MK Tips

Image
1. The Crystal Palace: eat here for a character buffet! That is a buffet meal with characters visiting you, not a buffet of Disney characters. You have a better chance of eating here the day you visit MK than trying to get a seat at Cinderella's w/o a reservation.

Also, subtip #1: Look how pretty the grass is and how calm the stream is. Do not step on the grass nor swim in the stream. You will get green dye on your shoes and water in your underwear. Don't do it.

Image
2. While venturing in Adventureland, beware of the camels. They spit on you and on the ice you're not supposed to eat.

More importantly, however, would the camel spit wash the green dye off your shoes?

Maybe the camel spits out green dye...

Forgive the bump.

It's not set in stone yet, but I actually might be going down to Walt Disney World in a couple of weeks. I've never had a real vacation like this before and I've never even set foot in Florida before.

My friend and I are still trying to work out the details, but I thought it would be worth noting here that we discovered that you can save a lot of money if you buy your park tickets ahead of time.

Anyway, I wanted to read through this thread again as well as show it to my friend, and I thought it would be good for other members here to take another peek if they plan on going as well.

Here's another top tip before going to Disney World:

Read this book:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... eimprovemz

We used this book when we went to Disney World a few years back and we couldn't have gone there without it. It is thorough in almost every aspect, and provides humour too. What's more is that it includes personal tips from readers as well, so that gives a more broad choice of good options.

Get it now.

EDIT:

Just a random question...can you buy Disney theme park tickets in Disney Stores? I remember at one point in England you could, so I wondered if it were the same in America...

Hey, thanks for the tip, Wonderlicious! I have seen those types of books before and was actually going to look at them this weekend, but had no clue which one to get!

Hmm. . . I'm not sure if you can buy tickets at the Disney Store. I'll probably be hitting one this weekend though so I'll ask. :) We've been looking at tickets online.

Yep, you can! Well at least I'm pretty sure. Ever since this whole fiasco with The Children's Place taking over the Disney Store, I'm not quite sure what they sell anymore. The last time we went, they were selling them. Instead of the paper tickets though, you get a plastic card with different colors/characters depending what kind of ticket you get. You can also buy them at Travel Agencies. Don't fall for the tourist trap ones onces you reach the WDW area in Florida. Getting them before you go saves not only money, but precious vacation time.

Disney's new "Magic Your Way" was supposed to make things easier when buying tickets but now it is confusing. I've tried my best to make it as clear as possible:

- one day non-hopper for one park
- one day hopper for access to all main 4 theme parks
- multiday (up to 7) non-hopper for one park each day
- multiday (up to 7) hopper for access to all main 4 theme parks each day
- multiday (up to 7) non-hopper for one of the main 4 theme parks each day as well as premium plan extras including a limited number of visits (depending how long your ticket lasts) to the water parks, Disney Quest, Wide World of Sports, and "more."
- multiday (up to 7) hopper for access to all main 4 theme parks each day as well as premium plan extras including a limited number of visits (depending how long your ticket lasts) to the water parks, Disney Quest, Wide World of Sports, and "more."
- For any of the tickets with any or no bonus features, the free option that tickets expire within 14 days of purchase
- For any of the tickets with any or no bonus features, the option (for an additional fee) that tickets NEVER expire.
- Or the big momma ticket of them all: the Annual Passport good for 365 days for access to all things of Walt Disney World.

phew! Before it was much easier. Any multiday ticket was automatically a hopper and never expired. You'd only pay extra for premium plan bonuses. When one ponders though, the new system really helps the pickiest of vacation planners.

Anyhow, I hope you and your friend plan on going to the other Happiest Place on Earth, since for any Disney fan and most of the generic WDW vacationeers, the planning, spending, and taking off from work is most definitely worth it with that first and repeat visit(s). Also, thank you for bumping this thread. I always enjoy reading it since some comments in the tip guide are funny. I hope you use it well and make the best of your WDW vacation.

Call me a freak, but I've read just about every Walt Disney World vacation guide out there, cover to cover. I therefore feel educated enough to be able to declare the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World (the one you've linked to, Wondy) as hands-down THE BEST.

Call me a freak again, but I re-read the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World each year as a new volume is released cover to cover... literally. It does change each year, plus I just like to read about Disney World, and find out what they have to say about the newest changes at the park. I've done this every year since sometime in the late 90s.

The only criticisms I level against the book is that it is at times, I feel, too critical, but that's their whole angle (independence from Disney). Also, the 2005 edition now includes running commentary by Jim Hill throughout which, like all things with Jim Hill, I have mixed feelings about. (*I also can't vouch for their touring plans, as I've never used them*).

Aside from that, it's pretty much the Walt Disney World Bible, whether you are wanting just the basics or a little more detail, and certainly worth your money if you are even considering a trip down there. It's not a very high price, and Amazon's price is as good as anyone else's that I've ever seen. (They also put out much smaller but still wonderful guides to Disneyland and Disneyland Paris, for which I have also read the most recent editions cover to cover ).
Kram Nebuer wrote:- Or the big momma ticket of them all: the Annual Passport good for 365 days for access to all things of Walt Disney World.
Actually, there's an even bigger big momma ticket.. the Premium Annual Passport which gets you 365 access to all the parks with park hopping priviledges, free parking, and the standard discounts and opportunities that come with an annual pass, PLUS access to Pleasure Island, Disneyquest, and the water parks. Too bad the mini golf isn't included in that (to my knowledge, it isn't, but correct me if I'm wrong).

Wow! I didn't know you coulud get free parking too. And I assumed an annual passport was automatically a park hopper, unless that has been changed too? I forgot about the discounts too. Man, if I ever live in Florida or if I have a private jet or if the world would get with the program and invent the Star Trek transporters, then I'd most definitely get an Annual Premiem Park Hopper Pass for Walt Disney World!

I would think they'd at least discount mini golf. Speaking of which, I heard that the Fantasia Gardens mini-golf is one of the most difficult mini golf courses out there.

Oh it is, I was just saying that that was a perk for both types of Annual Pass. Sorry for the confusion.
Kram Nebuer wrote:I forgot about the discounts too.
Yes, and what glorious discounts they are... especially for resort rates.
Kram Nebuer wrote:Man, if I ever live in Florida or if I have a private jet or if the world would get with the program and invent the Star Trek transporters, then I'd most definitely get an Annual Premiem Park Hopper Pass for Walt Disney World!
I'm with ya on that one!

They do discount mini golf (along with just about everything that costs an extra admission charge inside WDW) with a basic Annual Pass. That same discount would apply to the Premium Annual Pass too, assuming that the PAP doesn't already include mini-golf, which as I said, I don't think it does.

And wow, I didn't know it was supposed to be that hard. Maybe I'll stick with Winter Summerland then. WDW Mini-Golf is one thing I've always wanted to do but haven't yet had the chance. DisneyQuest is another.

My last day of work is two weeks from now exactly. Then I fly home Friday afternoon.

But before I go, a bit more sage advice from good ole Escapay. Some of it may be repeated simply because I can't remember what I said before.

Revised time to go to the parks:
Mid-January to Early-February
Mid-May to Mid-June
Last Two Weeks of July
Mid-September to Early-November

So basically, don't go during the other times, especially Easter and ESPECIALLY Fourth of July. Maybe it's just me, but the park is uber-crowded and the fireworks are IMO subpar.

A new guide to watching "Wishes" (in MK) (clockwise)
-Adventureland: don't bother
-Frontierland: in front of Pecos Bill, or on the bridge between the bottleneck and Frontierland. Bottleneck refers to the area of Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and WDW Railroad.
-Liberty Square: By the Liberty Bell or Riverboat Landing, and in front of Diamond Horshoe
-Fantasyland: My usual favorite, in the triangled area between Snow White, the Carousel, and Dumbo. Another really good area is next to Scuttle's Landing and in front of Dumbo. And for a panoramic view where you don't need to turn your head as much, look for the nutwagon, and stand exactly between that and the entrance to Winnie the Pooh.
-Toontown: don't bother
Tomorrowland: Either on the bridge from Tomorrowland to the hub, or around the TTA, close to the popcorn stand
-Main Street/Hub: Just going to reiterate again, DON'T BOTHER, unless you don't mind having personal space invaded by other people, then waiting 40 minutes to move 5 feet.

If you see a line, but want to ask the castmember a question, feel free to jump the line just for the question. But please, don't decide, "Hey, I want to buy something after all!" and see if we'll serve you. We'll just point you to the line.

There are several of our popcorn stands where the drinks are withing grabbing range of guests. Do not grab them and throw us your money. Do not touch ANYTHING unless you tell us in line what you want and we get it for you.

For the love of god, if you a wagon in the process of closing, keep walking. No, we can't re-open for you. No, we can't give you a water discreetly. No, we can't make another batch of popcorn and clean the kettle again. Do you go up to a McDonald's at the end of the night and say, "But we came all the way from Butte Montana and we want fries!" and see if they give it to you? No. We don't either.

If we tell you, "My drinks have been restocked so they're not very cold", do not give us a disgusted and sour face and grumble while walking away. And do not suddenly walk over to the wagon, pull out a drink, and say, "HEY! IT'S NOT WARM AT ALL! IT'S COLD ENOUGH FOR ME!" and throw money. That's just...rude.

The second "Spectromagic" at MK and the second Fantasmic at MGM are always the least crowded.

If a ride is down for the day, do not ask us if you can still get fastpasses for it. Do not try to put your ticket in and get a fastpass anyway. You'll be wasting a fastpass.

People come to WDW, and they check in their brain and their manners. Expect to bump into people and not get an "Excuse Me" unless they're a castmember. Expect people to rush to be the first in line.

PLEASE MOVE ALL THE WAY DOWN.

Yikes, we had a last minute change in plans! Instead of Florida, we're going to California due to some unforseen curcumstances! Anyone got any advice specifically for Disneyland? We'll only be spending one day there, maybe two at the most, and we're not interested in hoppers.

Had to chime in since The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World has been mentioned. We bought this book in preparation for our April trip and to say it was a Godsend would be an understatement. We used it for EVERYTHING; it even helped us find a fantastic shuttle service to-and-from the airport.

If you are planning a trip to WDW or even thinking about planning a trip there, you'd be short-changing your self by not investing in this book.

GOOD LORD ESCAPAY! That is a lot of info. A lot, but very helpful. My family and I are going to Disney this Tuesday and all of your post gave us tons more help. Thanks again!
