Brother Bear SPOILERS!

Post by Prince Adam »

WARNING: if you do not want to know the premise (and ending) of Brother Bear, do not read ahead. I've read the storybook at Chapters, and know the story:

Kenai is one of three brothers, about to reach the age where he will receive his totem: a symbol of his place in the world. His one brother has the totem of the eagle, the second of the wolf. He receives the bear, and is dismayed. He wanted a fierce, brave animal. One day, during the salmon run, and bear steals the village's fish. Kenai goes after her, and his brothers follow. Then Kenai and Brother #2 kill the bear, but also Brother #1. Because his totem was an eagle, he his transformed into the spirit of an eagle. Because Brother #1 is so wise, he transforms Kenai into a bear, so that he will learn to understand his enemy. However, Brother #2 doesn't know this, and goes off to kill Kenai.
Along the journey to where the lights meet the earth (so Kenai can transform back) Kenai meets Koda, who's been seperated from his mom. The two team up, and, after a startling revelation, Kenai reveals to Koda that his mother has been killed (it was her who stole the fish).
Koda gets angry, but then rushes back to Kenai's rescue when Kenai is almost killed by Brother #2. Then Brother #1 turns Kenai back into a bear, they sort the whole thing out, and Koda forgives Kenai.
However, Koda's mom is still dead, and he is alone in the world. So, Kenai has Brother #1 turn him back into a bear, so he can be with Koda. Koda is overjoyed to have 3 new brothers, especially since one is a bear (Kenai) one an eagle spirit (Brother #1) and one a human (Brother #2).

I know, I know: it's complicated and confusing. But I couldn't remember the two brothers names (they're somthing like Siptik and Denai) and there's obvious plotholes. But at least this confirms the "brother-hunting-brother" storyline".

Well, the IMDb lists the names Denahi and Sitka - with Sitka being voiced by Aladar's D.B. Sweeney - so, is that a bad thing?

Now I think it has to be mentioned that Kenai is the youngest of the three, and pretty damn headstrong, to boot. From what I can gather about the totems from the official site, the eagle and the wolf are both powerful spirits, yet the bear is described as "gentle, good-natured and adaptable", surprisingly enough. You'd think such a large carnivore would also be a powerful symbol, but hey. :P

Some things I'm confused about, though - how is the oldest brother (I'm pretty sure it's Sitka) killed? Early summaries said that the mother bear killed Sitka when she thought her cub was being threatened (as mother bears are naturally apt to do). But the other two brothers thought the bear killed Sitka with no reason. Racked with grief, Kenai seeked out the bear and killed her in revenge. The "Great Spirits" (I guess it's supposed to be the dead brother?) turned Kenai into a bear to teach a lesson to him. And when Kenai headed off to find the place "Where the Lights Touch the Earth", his remaining brother Denahi came upon the shredded clothes Kenai left behind, and thought HIM dead too. So he organizes a hunting party to set out to destroy the creature who cost him two siblings. And... whaddaya know? The bear they're hunting is Kenai himself. Thus the journey began...

That's how I understood it anyway. However, that ending is such typical Disney pap it makes me want to gag. Two bears, a human, and a spirit - now they're all a happy family!! Screw ethereal planes of existance - I guess Sitka is just as alive and involved as he ever was!
Life often leaves us standing bare, naked and dejected with a lost opportunity. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: "Too late."

This plot rivals The Matrix Reloaded in confusion and complexity.

This is all true (as I said-I'm not very good at synopsis  ), and Sitka is accidentaly killed along with Koda's mother. And yes, the "Great Spirits" are Sitka.
