I even made a list of the films I had watched this year so I wouldn't forget any.
And now that it is NYE, I won't be watching any new ones this year so here goes:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Michel Gondy is a music video god, and it is great to see he can bring that innovation to the big screen. Terrific performances all around. Smart, funny and moving.
Dawn of the Dead: A very close "second" (although this isn't a strictly ordered list). As a huge fan of the original, I fear the worst, but instead got one of the best zombie/action films ever made. It was a zombie movie that my girlfriend liked, and that is a huge compliment!
Spider-man 2 : As close to a perfect comic book film that we are going to see for a long time, it got almost everything right. Are you paying attention DC/Warner?!?!
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy: I highly anticipated this, and wasn't let down for a second. If I wasn't outright lauging, I was chuckling throughout most of this. Top-notch comedy. I hope I can write like this one day.
Napoleon Dynamite: Another consistently funny film. Not much happens, but I was in tears of laughter for most of the piece.
The Incredibles: Not my favourite Pixar film to date (I think that honour goes to Monsters Inc), but definitely a fun ride. Love all the comic references, especially the Fantasic Four/Moleman ones. Only complaint is that it goes too long.
Garden State: This one surprised me too. There weren't enough films like that this year. Another film where not much happens, but incredibly well-made and acted.
Shaun of the Dead : I had made up my mind to like this before I saw it, and I was a little disappointed (nothing lives up to the hype). However, as with all Simon Pegg projects, there are many layers of references and homages to keep an eye out for. In the end, very hard NOT to like.
Dodgeball : I suspected this would be funny, but it was terrific. It even had a pirate AND David Hasselhoff! Who could ask for anything more?
Fahrenheit 9/11 : Speaking of asking for anything Moore, this film may not have achieved its aim (the Dubya regained office), but it is still a powerful documentary on the recent invasion of Iraq and should be applauded for its penetration into areas of the movie going public that would not normally hear about these facts.
There were other highlights (Blade: Trinity, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, Team America, A Very Long Engagement), but if I had a top 10, that'd be it.
