Most underrated Disney film from each decade...

Post by Wonderlicious »

Since practically every topic in General Discussion these days concerns slipcovers and news on new DVDs and movies and not on classic Disney films, I decided to start a topic on the subject.

However, I'm not sure if some of these will class as classic Disney films, as I've come up with an idea for us all to create lists of the most underrated Disney film from each decade (can include live action, too). What would it be for you? Include reasons if you wish.

1940s: The Three Caballeros
I've only seen this movie once and found it the second most enjoyable of the four (or maybe five, as I may have seen Saludos Amigos as a young child) package films that I have seen. However, some find it the conttendor for the studio's worst list. Okay, it's not amazing, but it deserves better.
Runner up: Dumbo/Ichabod and Mr Toad (tie)

1950s: Alice in Wonderland
I've not seen any Disney live action films of the 1950s, so I'll have to go with Alice. It's my favourite of the decade, and whilst popular, it does get the least amount of attention compared to her decade mates.
Runner up: Sleeping Beauty

1960s: Pollyanna
Whilst considered a classic amongst Disney fans, it's often overlooked by the mainstream crowd, so I'll go with Pollyanna as the most underrated film of this certain decade.
Runner up: The Sword in the Stone

1970s: Robin Hood
It's really a shame that just because of some reused animation and the odd cliche, this film is dubbed one of Disney's worst and given little attention by the media, especially Disney themselves, when this truly is a cute film that should be given a special edition.
Runner up: Bedknobs and Broomsticks

1980s: The Black Cauldron
Whilst not the best of this decade (and not the worst, either), The Black Cauldron screams underrated the most. Often snubbed by critics and Disney enthusiasts, this film shouldn't get bullied so much.
Runner up: Return to Oz/The Great Mouse Detective (tie)

1990s: The Rescuers Down Under
Contrary to popular belief, this film is not a sequel in the same lines as The Lion King 2 or Belle's Magical World. This is a proper theatrical sequel along the lines of Toy Story 2, and yet people lump it as a lesser film (although one of the better lessers, fortunately) when it's really an animated classic. And the current DVD isn't all that great.
Runner up: Mulan/Pocahontas (tie)

2000s: Cinderella 2
Whilst we're on the topic of sequels, I actually think I should mention Cinderella 2. It is somewhat blashphemous, yet it doesn't garner the harsh reputation that it is often given as the worst thing to come out of Disney. Trust me, I have seen much worse things from the Cheese.
Runner up: Home on the Range

1940's The Adventures of Icabod and Mr. Toad, this is in my personal top ten.

1950's Alice in Wonderland-A lot of people even Walt didn't care for the film too much. But I think it's a wondeful film

1960's Sword in the Stone-Just a fun little film. And who doesn't love the Wizards duel.

1970's The Aristocats-Cute and charming.

1980's-Nothing

1990's Hunchback of Notre Dame-I don't know if people really now how good this film is.

2000's-Tie Treasure Planet and Atlantis-If I was a ten year old boy I would have loved these films. I'm a thirty year old man and I love these films.

Buffy: We have a marching jazz band?
Oz: Yeah, but, you know, since the best jazz is improvisational, we'd be going off in all directions, banging into floats... scary.

1940's- The Adventures of Icabod and Mr. Toad
i've always loved these films, and i really think they are great! i just don't think disney thinks they are great! lol

1950's- Sleeping Beauty
it's a beautiful piece of art, and i don't think it recieves as mush respect as it should, at least NOW it's on the platinum line...

1960's- The Sword in the stone
it's always been one of my favorites and i can't wait to see a special edition of it!!! i just wish more people felt the same way.

1970's- Robin Hood
it definately does not deserve all the crap people give it

1980's- The Great Mouse Detective
such a fun movie!

1990's- Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame
these movies were just released at the wrong time i think, they both have such amazing music and beautiful animation. they are both 2 of my favorite disney movies of all time!

2000's- Brother Bear and Home on the Range
Brother Bear was a very good effort by the company to bring back a more serious and more musical oriented kind of film back. Home on the Range is something i jsut discovered the other day. if your judging this movie by what people have said a bout it and not by actually watching it yourself i think you are making a serious mistake. i thought it was very funny at times and it has some pretty fun music in it too!

1940's: Don't know.. Haven't seen any.
1950's: Sleeping Beauty
1960's: Well, Sword in the Stone is not well known, but I don't consider it to be underrated since it isn't good at all.
1970's: Robin Hood
1980's: The Fox and the Hound. Totally forgotten.
1990's: Hunchback and Tarzan without a doubt. There are many more though!
2000's: Atlantis. Totally mind blowing stuff... The art direction was fresh, as was the story.

1940's - The Three Cabelleros

1950's - Alice in Wonerland

1960's - Sword in the Stone

1970's - Robin Hood

1980's - The Fox and the Hound (Personal favourite but I feel it's pretty underrated although it's a hard choice since all of the 80's movies except for The Little Mermaid are underrated)

1990's - The Rescuers Down Under (almost tied with Hercules and Hunchback. I don't feel Tarzan is super underrated but I think it is, just not as much.)

2000's - Treaure Planet (I feel Brother Bear is as well but Treasure Planet was just about as enjoyable but it's more underrated)

1930's - The Short Subjects - Between 1932 - 1939 The Disney short subjects were some of the best ever done and were equal to Warners best during the 1943 - 1952. The team animators Walt had was an awesome mix of veterans, (Norm Ferguson, Bill Tylta, Fred Moore, Ben Shaprsteen, etc.) and talented young artist (Nine Old Men & Art Babbitt).
I still think the Brave Little Tailor is best example of hand animated movement ever by the giant.

1940's - Dumbo - Walt had the guts to release as is.

1970's - Aristcats & Rescurers - Solid movies with great night animation.

1990's - Cheapquels of Alladain. Not great but entertaining.

Well, The Three Caballeros is SERIOUSLY underrated, so that's my vote for the 1940s. The animation in this film is amazing, the songs are amazing- I mean, you guys who panned the movie DID see the "Baia" serenade sequence, didn't you? All I can say is, one of my 3 favorite Disney moments in an animated film of ALL-TIME. Sure, Donald Duck is a tad obnoxious in the film, which is my biggest complaint. And of course this film isn't perfect. Maybe it's even more flawed than the average Disney classic. But let's talk about it's virtues. Because, BOY does it have enough of those!

The Black Cauldron wasn't really underrated in the eyes of most critics. Roger Ebert gave it 3 and a half stars. Though it's THE most amazing Disney non-musical movie I've ever seen, animated & live-action. The characters are great and it's so surprising that given how cliched The Aristocats were and how often Disney's movies had a tendancy to make the relationships between boys and girls mainly about the fact that they are different.

The Aristocats isn't really all that underrated. It does have that excellent "Ev'rybody Wants to Be a Cat" sequence. But it's not very impressive. The human characters are actually more interesting than the animated ones, and the fact that the characters are in Paris is never really given license to impress in itself. So therefore my vote for most underrated Disney movie of the 70s is Robin Hood. Not because it's underrated so much as, because no one thought this movie was any good, except some Disney fans. And it's just not that bad. The music is great, for one thing. The characters are okay. It's simple Disney entertainment, and it is entertaining. So it deserves the award for most underrated film of the 70s. It is the most underrated because people have said it's bad, when it's not bad at all. I think The Rescuers was really their best feature-length animated film of that decade (I'm not counting TMAoWtP because it's a package feature with pieces made mostly in the 60s), so it's not really underrated at all.
