Why do Disney have to ruin the original covers?

Post by rodis »

Am I the only one who thinks the original VHS covers were WAY better than the new ones?

And it doesn't seem like Disney put much thought into the DVD covers.
Snow White's VHS was BEAUTIFUL but the Platinum edition one looks mediocre IMO.

An excellent example is the The Little Mermaid. The original video cover (1990) was perhaps the best Disney cover EVER! The 1998 one which was also used for the DVD was downright horrible :(

It looks like they've been using an angular style for the DVD covers.

I wish that with certain films Disney would just leave the cover the way it is (but I know it won't happen since the new cover adds to the excitement).

Personally I've never liked any of the cover art Disney has used. They're way too bright and cartoony but that's understandable seeing as they try to market to families and children. I don't see why they don't just use the movie poster art from the films. These are still usually bright and appealing to kids but don't have a generic look to them that the video releases have.

I just think that the original cover of LIttle Mermaid matches the sequel's cover (you know, the rock, the splash, the castle, the parent, the villain). Same with Lion King 2-it's cover matches the Lion King Platinum cover very nicely, but it too will get a new one with the SE release.

It really depends, but overall, I agree that the VHS covers have been better. One exception though is The Lion King - I really like the DVD cover's warm colors and its arrangement. On the other hand, on the original VHS cover, none of the characters were to scale with one another and it all looked squished.

Does the VHS cover of The Liong King has blue colors on it in the US version?

I remember seeing something like that; anyway, my copy has warm colors (orange sky) :)

I thought the Platinum cover of BatB was superior to the VHS cover--if someone hadn't mucked Belle's portrait for the Platinum release...

I agree. I also liked the Snow White Platinum cover, it was so much differnt from any they had released so far, of any of the posters. I'm imagining that Aladdin will probably be along the same lines as the existing platinums, but with a red backround. I look forward to seeing it.

Though Sleeping Beauty may not have the best cover, I think it is my fave of all the Sleeping Beauty covers released to date. :)

I don't have a really big issue with the latest covers.
My only issue is the fact that generally the R2 covers are much nicer than what we get in the States. You've got to see the Atlantis cover in one of 2099's posts in the International Forum...it's haed-and-shoulders above anything we get.

Jack -

My VHS of The Lion King has the exact same cover only the sky is orange as I said earlier, and naturally, the reflection on the rock is orange-brown as well. I remember seeing the cover you posted and thinking how much better it was than mine, maybe because I'm a freak of blue&green

I really like the platinium covers so far...and Sleeping Beauty :) . But I do think that some of the VHS Masterpiece Edition remakes are not as nice as the original VHS covers.

I don't mind the Platinum covers, even though I liked the older ones better. The thing I did not like was that 'The Rescuers' got the same cover art in 3 different Issues (Recalled Edition, Re-Issue Edition, VHS, DVD Standard). It was't fair.

and yet again i agree with indiana (i find i say that a lot :P ) in addition to the atlantis cover, most recently the french sleeping beauty cover was by far one of the best i have seen recently. i have seriously thought of buying it just for the cover!

my opinion of the the vhs covers was that they were too cartoonish. it's like the pictures were just taken cookie cutter style out of the movie and pasted on the cover.. nothing really artistic about it. i've really enjoyed the covers of the recent CE's. they are much more imaginative, slick, and classy.

I hope they make a really nice Aladdin cover! I did not like the BATB Platinum Edition cover! It was the same cover as the first one but they just had a different backround that didn't go with Belle and Beast! It should have been different in my opinion! Oh well! Can't have everything! :)

I like the platinum Beauty and the Beast cover! In fact, I like all the platinum covers so far, they really give a nice "darker" feeling to the movies. Not as much of bright, cheery colors, more appealing to the teenage or older crowd.

Sorry, I can't agree on that, the old covers are the best, they're more attractive.

Overall, I like the VHS covers more, but there are exceptions when I like the DVD covers more. These are:

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Make Mine Music
Melody Time
Fun and Fancy Free
Alice in Wonderland
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
The Black Cauldron
The Lion King

These are the exceptions. I like the VHS covers better for all the rest. In the case of the DVD covers I mentioned above, I find them classier than their VHS counterparts.

I like the Snow White platinum edition better! It is different! That is how BATB platinum edition should have been! :)
