You'll be happy to hear it is...
Well that does make me happy. But I assumed that there were only 5 more movies left on the slate: Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, The Little Mermaid, The Jungle Book, and 101 Dalmatians.

I forgot about that when I had my short list of movies that I think deserve Masterpiece Editions. This is right at the TOP of that list for me, this is one of my all-time favorite Disney movies!! Animated or live-action.

Disney recently added 4 more (Sleeping Beauty, Fantasia (+2000), Peter Pan and Pinnochio).

Crap. This is good news. I'm not sure I understand why Peter Pan is being added to that list since it already got a special edition. Sure maybe they were like, a new release would be approapriate since the current DVD is out of print. Same thing with Sleeping Beauty. I can't believe I hadn't heard this news before. Does everyone know this?

From one of UD's very own pages http://www.ultimatedisney.com/releasetypes.html: (scroll down to Platinum)
The Platinum Collection was originally comprised of Disney's 10 best-selling home video titles: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin, Bambi, The Jungle Book, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Lady and the Tramp and 101 Dalmatians. In May of 2003, Disney announced they would be adding Pinocchio, Fantasia, Peter Pan, and Sleeping Beauty to the Platinum Collection for a total of 14 titles. The Platinum Edition releases are even superior to their Collector's Edition releases for new movies, devoted to the ultimate video and audio, and a plethora of extras.
And to add to the list of DVDs that should get better treatment:

Star Wars IV-VI - preferably that they also release the theatrical versions even though they benefit a little from some enhancements. Also, a part of me just wants each movie to be a 2-disc set.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein Collection - except for Sound of Music, all are little-more-than-barebones nonanamorphic single-discs, and I believe they're going out of print as well. So perhaps we'll get lucky and get two-disc special editions.

History of the World Part 1 - Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and Spaceballs have special editions, and this should too.

Beyond the Poseidon Adventure - this should just be on DVD, I don't care if it's barebones nonanamorphic like its predecessor.

Clue - I once had a fake "Special Edition" that I posted at imdb, but I can't find it anymore. There should be more than the trailer and endings, there should be little featurettes about making the movie, the board game, and maybe something about the never-made sister movie, Monopoly.

It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World - there is a special edition, I just wish MGM didn't take it out of print.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off - I heard somewhere long ago that there may be a special edition, but I haven't heard anything since. Would be cool to see the deleted scene where they order something french, then find out it's cow's pancreas.

A Streetcar Named Desire - one of the best movies ever and it's a barebones DVD, supposedly in pan and scan (though I don't know why, since it was made in 1951, pre-Cinerama and pre Cinemascope and pre any type of widescreen at all).

How the West Was Won - wouldn't mind a cleaner print (and maybe they can digitally change the two lines so that it's one picture, instead of the three put together because of three-camera Cinerama). And anamorphic.

The Rocketeer - an underrated early 90s Disney gem. Newsies got a special edition, this should too.

Honey, I... series - ditto Rocketeer.

Charade - even though I'd love to own the $39.95 Criterion version, my cheap $6.99 Madacy version is fine for now, but I'd like Universal to give it its own release, not tacked on to the remake, The Truth About Charlie.

Far and Away - I first saw the TV version, with the added scenes that made the movie better, and I'd like Universal to release that version as well, and throw in a couple scant featurettes.

Mallrats - yes, there's an okay version out already, but I'm just posting this because I found out from TheDigitalBits that a 10th Anniversary Edition is coming out!

The Criterion version is a lot better than the $6.99 version. :p
Of course, I still wish they'd make a 2-disc of this as well and put bios of the two stars! The $6.99 has a bio of Cary Grant so I bought that in addition to the Criterion Collection. How I wish they could just put those nice features into ONE release!

I should point out that Peter Pan's special edition was little more than a solid 1 disc set, so a 2 disc set via the Platinum Collection would be a good idea, especially considering there is stuff that could make it Disney's DVD release out there (promotional TV shows including one like One Hour in Wonderland, trailers, abandonded concepts etc). It is a bit silly if Sleeping Beauty has been added to the Collection if it already has a 2 disc set, but it seems reasonable if Disney has the intention of keeping all their fairy tale films in the same production line, which is a theory for it being there, despite the idea of it being a good seller.

I think it's fair to say that the BEST PICTURE OF ALL TIME should get a beautifully crafted DVD edition, and that would be...

... Jane Campion's marvelous postmodern romance The Piano. Winner of 3 Academy Awards including Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (Holly Hunter), and Best Supporting Actress (Anna Paquin). It was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, but 1993 was the year of the Steven Spielberg/Schindler's List juggernaut, so not even Gone With Then Wind could have beat it. Anyway, it was the Academy's lost. I can't even put into words how great this film it is...it's the only film I can recall that can soley be described as a piece of art.

Dancer In The Dark's DVD could use some fine tuning, including better extras and better sound/picture.
The Top 10 Films of 2005:
1) Brokeback Mountain 2) The Squid and the Whale 3) Me And You And Everyone We Know 4) The New World 5) A History of Violence 6) Match Point 7) Munich 8.) Crash 9) Wallace and Gromit 10) Pride & Prejudice

For the earlier people who were wondering what the details for the previous 4 Batman Special Editions were, here they are. Here's the official announcement from DavisDVD (each will be a 2 disc SE):
The holiday shopping season is shaping up to be one hell of a wallet-buster. Along with all of the requisite big summer guns, Warner Home Video will debut brand new two-disc special editions of Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Due on October 18th, each set will feature a new digitally remastered anamorphic transfer of the movie. Bonus features are set to include director commentaries by Tim Burton and old "nail in the coffin" Joel Schumacher, new documentaries, making-of featurettes galore, cast and crew interviews and nine music videos from Prince, Seal and the Smashing Pumpkins. You'll be able to pick up the Dark Knight individually, or collected in the Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997 box set.

I wish they would put out the movie Airplane with some decent extras. That would be worth re-buying.
Buffy: We have a marching jazz band?
Oz: Yeah, but, you know, since the best jazz is improvisational, we'd be going off in all directions, banging into floats... scary.

I sort of said that too. But it's now out of print, so it would be cool if it resurfaced in the same basic edition just with the Platinum Edition heading on it. That way, maybe I could actually own it someday. Plus you watch, there most likely is still something yet that they could add to the package.

Paramount is issuing another edition of Airplane: Don't Call Me Shirley Collector's Edition sometime in the late quarter (September-November). They're doing the same thing with Clueless and Tommy Boy - reissuing some of their older titles as Special Collector's Editions. :)

Disneykid wrote:The Harry Potter series
The extended version of Chamber of Secrets that aired on ABC is excellent and is a better representation of the book than the theatrical cut. I want to see full extended editions for Sorcerer's Stone and Prisoner of Azkaban, especially since WB was stingy enough to leave off most of their deleted scenes in the supplements section (SS had at least 20 minutes cut, and PoA had about ten minutes cut. SS's DVD only has seven minutes of footage and PoA's only has five). Speaking of which, all three films need the in-depth treatment they deserve - commentary tracks, documentaries, galleries, special effects tests etc. I mean, come on, movies that have grossed a quarter of what each film has have received better DVD treatment.
I would love it if J.K. Rowling agrees to do an audio commentary for any of the Harry Potter films, she could tell what she liked and what she didn't like what made it into the film, etc.. From her interviews, she's really articulate, funny, and well-spoken - she'd be the perfect candidate for one. Or if not a commentary, at least an in-depth interview just with her about her feelings about the movie. Or a director/screenwriter's commentary - Columbus did one for Mrs. Doubtfire, and I can't see why he wouldn't want to do one for SS.

Tommy Boy?!! Jesus Christ, what exactly about that film screams "great" or "funny"? Tommy Boy is horrible. The only thing Paramount forgot to put on the original DVD was a featurette with Roger Ebert about how Gene Siskel walked out of the screening before it was finished and how he envied his partner in thumbs for it, which includes a clip of Siskel & Ebert on their "At the Movies" show discussing it. MGM did that for their special edition of David Lynch's abysmal Blue Velvet.

I heard about the Clueless: Whatever Edition, and I'm COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS! August 30th. And Airplane Shirley needed another DVD release, but don't expect those important extra TV scenes to show up. I hope what they do is reshoot segments of the original audio commentary since I heard that the participants talked for too long in the second half about how they had nothing left to say, who wants to hear that? Get the guys back and make them comment on the scenes they botched in the original session and splice that into the original commentary. Also, I really think Paramount should re-release Airplane with it's sequel together and actually try to do something for Part II, if interviews are out of the question, the very least they could do would be to include the deleted/extra scenes that appeared in the TV version.

While Paramount is at it... I think the current releases of Flashdance, the Addams Family movies, and the Brady Bunch Movies are looking pretty shabby. By the by, did anyone know that Footloose was special editioned right about the same time Top Gun was?

A few more...

Romeo + Juliet
For a 1 disc set, this is great, although it should have actually been a 2 disc set, as the picture quality is affected by compression. I'm not sure if I'd rebuy the title if the bonus material remained the same, only went onto a second disc, but if I were the DVD maker, I would have done this when creating the set.

Dumbo
I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet...the current 60th Anniversary DVD is not as bad as everybody makes it out to be; as a matter of fact, I call it the best single disc of a Walt era film. However, it could have a Lowry transfer in the same vein as the Bambi DVD and there's enough stuff that could be added to pad out a 2 Disc Special Edition.

Love Actually
I rented this DVD last year and was pleased with the movie throroughly, bringing memories of Yuletide for the summer months (yes, I was watching it at the wrong time of the year ). However, it would be better if there was a 2 Discer out on the market. There seems to be something appealing about the bonus features, yet I just couldn't help being an Oliver and asking for more.

Oliver!
Don't have the current DVD, even though I like the movie. From what I read, though, the bonus is good yet equally limited and for a film that beat even 2001: a Space Odyessy for the 1968 best picture, it deserves a special edition. If there isn't news of one soon, I'll get the current disc, but that doesn't mean special editions won't be nice...

The Rescuers/The Rescuers Down Under
Both these films are charming and underrated Disney animated classics. However, the DVDs suck. The bonus features, cliched as this may sound, need room for improvement, as they're simply shorts, scrapbooks and games. A proper making of would be nice (the featurette on the margiannily superior Region 2 disc is a glorified trailer). However, the transfers need the most aid. The Rescuers is okay, yet The Rescuers Down Under is the most alarming; it comes from a print when it could have been digitally sourced, and the print must have been a bad one, as it's a blotchy mess of print flaws.

I wish A Walk to Remember would get better treatment. It is my favorite movie but it is a one disc dvd with no extra's (except for the commentary). I want an extended version or deleted scenes.

Also, Splendor in the Grass. It is an older movie with Natalie Wood in it.
