The missing Alice in Wonderland features
The missing Alice in Wonderland features
This thread is mainly an excuse to branch off of my post on this thread, though some of you may be interested in see this. I stumbled across a scan of the back of Alice in Wonderland's Archive laserdisc. I always knew Disney left out a ton of features, but holy crap, I had no idea just how much they left off. Everything in red was left off of the DVD, and everything in violet partially made its way to DVD, though not fully.

1. They want us to double dip on the Blu-ray release.
2. They needed room for those retarded kids games.

Missing Alice in Wonderland
Hopefully, all of that will show on the Blu-ray volume. Too bad the game extras had to take the place of these other nice extras.
I don't have this current release, and have toyed with the thought of getting it. "One Hour in Wonderland" was Walt's first entry into television, I think.
Maybe I'll wait until the next publication.

Extras Extras Extras
I own the boxset of Alice in Wonderland Archive LD among others. I have been really sad about the volume of content available in the box sets for the films released to the platinum editions as well as the newest 2 disc sets coming out but held back for the DVDs. Disney has been holding back on all the DVD releases.
The amount of content being held back is unbelievable!
I am so happy i own almost all the boxsets that disney released to Laserdisc. Im missing 1 or 2 only.
I also was unhappy when lion king left out the making of featurette that was on the LD and instead put out the most confusing DVD to date for the platinums. I have never opened my copy. My roommate opened his and we watched it and i was disappointed. They released this before Aladdin? Why? Aladdin was the biggest improvement for the platinums to date.
I love DVDs they are small and easier to handle but when i want the material that Disney is holding out on i go back to my trusty LDs

While it seems like Alice is missing alot, I don't think Disney will make another addition soon.
I think there are alot of additions Disney needs to work at! I mean look at The Lion King! It was Disney's highest grossing non-Pixar film, but the DVD is missing alot!
So while Alice could have been better, I think the biggest Alice fan needs to admit the DVD is done better than other releases!

The only other 2-Disc animated classics I think Alice is better than are Brother Bear (solid content, just not quite enough, and no serious commentary) and The Lion King (some quality features, but a scattered mess). All other 2-Disc animated classis, in my opinion, are better than Alice because with those, I felt like I actually learned about the film's production. Alice is essentially a collection of promotional features and nothing more. If it were a modern film, people would be complaining that its features were the equivalent of EPK fluff. The reason no one's complaining is because they're archival pieces, therefore rendering them more fascinating, but there's still a serious lack of actual production features.Timon/Pumba fan wrote:So while Alice could have been better, I think the biggest Alice fan needs to admit the DVD is done better than other releases!

Well, except for the fact they've long been out of print for a player that's considered obsolete.Lars Vermundsberget wrote:Those LD sets did cost quite a bit, so it's sort of nice to know that some of them are still better than their DVD counterparts in some ways...

I really, really would like to see the 1939 and 1943 storyboards.

Re: The missing Alice in Wonderland features
That's sad! I knew a lot was missing, but that's certainly a lot a lot! I wish they could've fit all the song demos. They don't take that much space, do they? They should've just had all the audio extras on an extra cd attatched to the back (You know how sometimes DVDs come with a computer game or cd attatched with packaging that is half of the back cover art). They were just audio stuff anyway! Grrrrrrr, before I didn't hate the "Virtual Tea Party" () as much, but now it's upsetting to know it took the place of better extras.
I know they weren't in the gallery, but shouldn't these be violet since some of them appeared in the new feature with the "Beyond the Laughing Sky" demo? I remember Kathryn Beaumont said something like "Let's look at some original character drawings..."Disneykid wrote:Everything in red was left off of the DVD, and everything in violet partially made its way to DVD, though not fully.

That's very true; you have a point. Editing, now.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Pinocchio
Fantasia
Saludos Amigos/The Three Caballeros
Cinderella
Alice in Wonderland
Sleeping Beauty
Mary Poppins
The Lion King
Pocahontas
Toy Story
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Mostly, Disney's done a good job at bringing at least the majority of the features to DVD (Snow White, Fantasia, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Mary Poppins, Pocahontas, Toy Story). They've only disappointed twice (Alice in Wonderland, The Lion King). I expect the Pinocchio Platinum and Hunchback SE to have most, if not all, of what their LD counterparts had.
Here are the LD box sets I can think of from Disney:littlefuzzy wrote:I'm curious, would you happen to have a list of these?Peter Pan wrote:I am so happy i own almost all the boxsets that disney released to Laserdisc. Im missing 1 or 2 only.

LD Boxset list
The previous post is accurate that is all the Box sets that i do own. Looking over my collection list, i have all of them so at one point i obviously found the ones i needed from ebay. That is how i got Pinocchio from ebay. Sad i forgot i had that one. I never found that one in the stores. Not all stores carried LDs. So to find some it took some hunting. Then i resorted to online stores like Ken Cranes Laserdiscs which is now DVD planet. I found out about them when i was searching for Song of the South on LD and they had it. That is one i treasure now that it is out of print.
I dont get to watch them very often, the discs are large and cumbersome so i only take them out every so often.
They were very expensive. Lion KIng was the most expensive at $125.00 brand new but now that i own them i feel better out the money i put out because of the content not availabe anywhere else.
To add to my list i also have the following box sets:
20,000 leagues under the sea
Swiss Family Robinson
Tron
I have all the other movies up to hercules on plain laserdiscs around the time LD went the way of the 8 track tape. Lion King is an exception i bought the plain LD when it came out and then they released the box set and i was impressed with the prior box sets that i had to have it even at $125.00.
LD may not have taken off like DVD has but Disney was not shy about releasing the extras on LD. Its a collection i am glad i have and take special care of.
