Important Poll on Polls -Should We Split General Discussion?

Feedback for the site and forum: comments, questions, suggestions welcome.

Is General Discussion TOO general?

No, I think it's fine as it is. I like having a variety of Disney-related topics all together.

Yes, I think it should be limited to "Discussions" - Disney polls & games should get a separate forum.

Yes, I think we should have a forum for discussing movies and a General Discussion will just be about DVD-related topics.

General Discussion is fine. I just don't like change.

Important Poll on Polls -Should We Split General Discussion?

Post by Billy Moon »

Could it be possible to make a different category for the polls?
There are so many "vote your favorite cover art" topics in the Genereal Discussion board that it's getting difficult to browse. I think the General Discussion category should be kept for actual discussion topics only.

Note from Luke - I've added the poll and moved this to...General Discussion. It'd get ignored elsewhere, I feel. Most people ignore everything outside of General Discussion, so I'm not sure if splitting it up would just mean a lot more threads that people aren't reading, or if it will help people to break through the "Gen Discussion"-only mentality. Vote & post, please.

I agree on this one 100% ... way too many.
I know the generally do facilitate discussion but there are so many to wade though now.

Let's have a poll to decide wether or not to get rid of polls altogether. I vote yes.

Well I'm forgainst it! :) [*]

Personally I think we should split General Discussion into two forums:

Disney DVD and Disney Films/Tv/Trivia

Disney DVD would be just for posts on [R1] DVDs - covering everything from OOP releases to speculation on new releases.

Disney Films/TV/Trivia would be a more general forum, where people could discuss all aspects of Disney film and television (and theme parks too). From current movie releases to Walt Disney's eye colour. This would be a more appropriate forum for the majority of our polls, espcially polls for favourites.

I agree with this, but Would it cause Luke to have more Bandwith problems? If so then I say just keep it the way it is. :)

I think it'd be nice for a seperate forum on DVD related posts, and purely movie related posts. It'd be easier to navigate: Everyone will know exactly where to discuss certain topics.

Keep 'em together

Keep 'em together. No reason to split, man. A lot of subjects have blurry lines, and it would be difficult to post them separately. Then you'd have complaints that stuff is where it doesn't belong. Or you'd miss stuff because you did not look in the right forum.

Most of the poll threads I read on here could do without the poll feature. They're usually discussions that don't need it.

i agree with 2099net. even though there could be several gray areas, the two categories suggested would be wasy enough to divide the posts into.

Tell me someone else finds this poll option hysterical:
Non-Vote

ummmm...it's a vote if you click it, right :?
I'm easily amused. Seriously.

It's for me so I can see the results without having to click "View Results" every time and without affecting the results. So, it's my non-vote...which technically IS a vote. Gimme a break. :P

You can't be serious? The polls are clearly marked [Poll] at the start of the subject heading, and the discussions are the ones that don't have that on there :P Problem solved... :)

I agree with 2099 generally....
I've always thought there should be a split in the forums, but not necessarily the polls. Polls should be a part of every forum, no matter whether it is general, international, off-topic whatever. I personally don't participate in most polls, but they are clearly marked so I can skip them if I don't want to.
The split should come with the DVD/Movies & everything else category.

For instance there is a lot of Disney info (computer games, comics etc) that I don't post because it is on-topic (being Disney), but not really DVD or movie related. If there was a DVD category, and an 'everything else Disney' category, you could have the split.
For those wanting to just look at all the latest discussion on DVD, it would be there.
For those who just like chatting about Disney, there would be a separate thread for that.
And you could have polls in both - it is just that the more general 'Best movie between 1954-1978' polls would all be grouped separately to the DVD stuff, and more likely to be read by the relevant parties.

some polls can foster enough discussion that they shouldn't be locked away in the dreaded *poll forum* so that some people never look at them.. and if the need is felt to bypass all the polls, they are rather easy to identify

I voted to seperate polls, but now that i think about it-GENERAL discussion should be a discussion on everything Disney-so that thread on Disney books and chernabog (or chernobog-sorry!)'s version for disney covers should be in GENERAL.

I think a seperate forum for polls and such would be of benefit because I generally ignore those threads as they are all pretty monotonous and generic and as of lately there's been so many fluttering the board. It would be easier to sift through the newer topics.

Update: I'm just a short while away from creating a separate 'Polls & Games' forum for things that are strictly polls or games. Threads that are primarily discussion and not just posts where people specify what they voted will undoubtedly stay in General Discussion, of course.

If you're opposed to the new forum idea, now is the time to voice your opinion. Or after I create it, too. Maybe it won't work out, I don't know.

That sounds like a good decision, Luke. It seems that some days, half of the posts in GD are polls.
