DVDs that you wish get a better TREATMENT!!!
Do you have a favorite movie that is on DVD that you wish had a better treatement? Even DVDS you own?? I really WISH some of the DVD I have get 2 disc speicals. Here is my list:
*1. A FistFul of Dollars - I bought this for $10, and I think it's worth $1. I love the movie, I just hate the poor DVD quailty. This is like one of the 1st generation DVDS. I am hoping it get the SAME TREATMENT as THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY Speical Edition. I love the packaging for that DVD.
*2. For a Few Dollars More - Same as above
*3. A Bronx Tale - This is my all time favorite movie. I am dying for them to make a great special edition.
4. Bonnie and Clyde - This is one of AFI top 100, #27. I think WB has to do a better job for a movie like this "WE ROB BANKS"!!!
* Movies/DVD I own

Breakfast at Tiffany's
It obviously is the biggest Audrey Hepburn movie known to anyone. Making it part of a box set with her other great films (Roman Holiday and Sabrina) is not enough. I would looooove to see a 2-disc to this movie. I mean, if they did it to My Fair Lady, then it must be done to B@T!
I know there's more DVDs that deserve better treatment, but this is the one that I'm pretty pissed about being 1-disc.
I wish they would just add lots of features to any future released DVDs. Make life easy for us, man!

Oh there's so many:
The Brady Bunch Movie
This needs a commentary, deleted scenes, gag/blooper reel, and making of. In addition it would also be cool if it had pop-up fun facts as a subtitle track and the episode of Wings "A House to Die For" which guest starred many of the Brady Bunch in character.
And of course, it needs the cover altering so it displays it's theatrical tag-line in full - "They're back to save America from the 90's"
A Very Brady Sequel/The Brady Bunch in the Whitehouse
Give these similar "Special Collector's Editions" to the Brady Bunch Movie above and sell them in a box-set with a special bonus disc.
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
All of the Batman: The Animated Series movies deserve proper Special Editions, but being the first Mask should be the top of the list. We need animatics, character and background design galleries, commentaries (one on the production, one on the story), voice over featurettes and more! Considering Warners are not only making a Special Edition of Batman & Robin this year, but actually re-editing the film, it's shameful the Animated Series movies are so neglected.
Germlins/Gremlins II: The New Batch
Well, Warners gave these films Special Editions, but they really didn't do enough - but I will concede Joe Dante's commentary tracks are fantastic, so anyone on the fence about buying these discs should do so at once (especially in the UK where a twin pack is coming out soon - the first time to get Gremlins II in the UK I think).
Ghostbusters II
Four words. "Why no special edition?" If any film needs the Special Edition treatment, it's Ghostbusters II. (And normally Sony are so keen on double dipping. Why neglect GB2?) At least if they did a sequel they could include the cool Run DMC "Ghostbusters" music video (and perhaps get the rights for Ray Parker Jr's too this time).
Ringu films
The original Japanese Ring films. All are superb and both UK and US collections seem to be missing substantial bonus features.
The UK boxset has deleted scenes from Ring 0: Birthday and an unconnected film from director Hideo Nakata; Sleeping Bride (and a cool leticular cover of Sadako emerging from the TV).
The US boxet is still in flux at the moment, but it appears it will include no supplements (but does include Spiral, the 'true' sequel to Ringu).
Considering the nature of the films, their popularity in Japan (and their cult status worldwide) and even the fact that Hollywood has jumped on the 'franchise', these gems deserve so much more.
The Frighteners
Why or why is this film barebones? (And why does it have such a crappy cover now?) This is a Peter Jackson film, for crying out loud. And it has literally hours of special features in the can from the Laserdisc release. I'm sure Universal can manage another release. After all, they did about 25,000 American Pie releases.

Anastasia - deserves a 2-disc collector's edition. One disc with kid-friendly features and a fullscreen transfer and another disc with enthusiast features and an anamorphic widescreen transfer. I want a more in-depth making-of documentary and music videos - especially Aaliyah's.
Clue - There isn't a whole lot they could have done. Maybe a featurette on the making-of from the period, deleted scenes, and a featurette on the board game to go with the trailer.
Breakfast At Tiffany's - I'd have to agree. It needs a better DVD than just a grainy print and a trailer. But I have to be nitpicky. "They did it for My Fair Lady, why not Breakfast At Tiffany's?" MFL was done by Warner Bros. BAT is owned by Paramount. And Paramount isn't known for its amazing treatment of catalogue titles. (Interesting note though - a VHS version of the DVD box set with Sabrina, Roman Holiday, and BAT has My Fair Lady in place of Sabrina. And Paramount has the only currently available VHS release. But all DVD releases of it are through Warner Bros.)
Return To Oz - I have a portion of an Oz TV special from 85 that talks about the making of Return To Oz. This would have made a nice inclusion. Or even a new making-of featurette.
The Black Cauldron - Certainly a newly restored anamorphic print wouldn't hurt. Nor would a little featurette on the making of the movie. Somewhere on tape, I have an episode of The Wonderful World of Disney from around 81 where Hayley Mills discusses playing Princess Eilonwy. This would have been a nice inclusion, even if she ended up not doing it. It had some interesting info. Maybe some promotional stuff from the period would have been nice too.

The Harry Potter series
The extended version of Chamber of Secrets that aired on ABC is excellent and is a better representation of the book than the theatrical cut. I want to see full extended editions for Sorcerer's Stone and Prisoner of Azkaban, especially since WB was stingy enough to leave off most of their deleted scenes in the supplements section (SS had at least 20 minutes cut, and PoA had about ten minutes cut. SS's DVD only has seven minutes of footage and PoA's only has five). Speaking of which, all three films need the in-depth treatment they deserve - commentary tracks, documentaries, galleries, special effects tests etc. I mean, come on, movies that have grossed a quarter of what each film has have received better DVD treatment.
Grease
Give this thing a new transfer instead of the recycled laserdisc one, fix the annoying Coca-Cola censoring, and give us quality supplements. This release is supposedly coming at the end of the year, but it's been in limbo since 2003 when the director confirmed doing a commentary track for it.
Jesus of Nazareth
If Roots (another 1977 mini series) can receive a restoration and solid bonus material, this can, too. Bonus material may be asking too much, but at the very least, this needs a restoration job.
The Stepford Wives (2004)
The current DVD is very solid, so supplements aren't a problem. The problem is that the theatrical cut is fairly butchered. I have a bootleg of the original rough cut, and it's far superior. Pretty much every scene in the final film had something removed from it. Frank Oz even prefers the rough cut, so this would truly be a director's cut if it were released.
It's a Wonderful Life
This is one of the most famous films of all time, yet it has a fairly spotty transfer and a mere two featurettes (though both featurettes are admittedly of high quality). If only this WB could get the rights to this, I'm sure we'd see a knock-out release for this film.
The Passion of the Christ
I know people keep thinking that giving this film the SE treatment would take away from its aura or something, but that's what the current DVD is for. There were rumors of a SE for this film for a while, and a DVD site reported that Mel Gibson was prepping supplements for it, though none appeared. A commentary track by Mel would be astounding considering how much subtext there is behind every frame. Since Fox has notoriously been double dipping on films lately, I'm fully expecting a re-release of this film. The question isn't if this will be released, but, rather, when.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
The current DVD is quite solid. The transfer's great as it is (though Lowry can kick it up a notch), but I'd like to see more extensive supplements of the Mary Poppins caliber. A commentary with Angela Lansbury and Richard Sherman (Robert is apparently too ill to partake in these things, anymore) needs to be done ASAP before one of them leaves us (David Swift died just mere months after recording Pollyanna and The Parent Trap's commentaries).
James and the Giant Peach
Calling the existing DVD a "Special Edition" is pretty much a joke. We get a five minute promotional featurette, a music video, gallery, and the trailer. The gallery itself is actually surprisingly well-rounded, but this film needs a real documentary, commentary, and an anamorphic transfer. Perhaps we'll see this when Charlie and the Chocolate Factory hits DVD later this year.
Alice in Wonderland
The existing DVD is great. It's got a fabulous transfer that can't be imrproved outside of HD or Blue-Ray, and a solid roster of archival supplements. The problem is that archival supplements are ALL we get. If Alice were a modern film, its features would be the equivalent of EPK fluff. The majority of the stuff on disc two is promotional in nature. We have nothing new ot retrospective that gives us a deep look into the film's creation. Disney wouldn't even be really faulted too much for not creating a new documentary and commentary...IF they had ported over all of the missing laserdisc features. This could've been the best Disney DVD ever produced, even greater than Snow White. Sigh.

You won't get it. Ever. Rowling thinks such supplements will "spoil the magic". I'm not sure if I agree with this, but I respect her decision (but I seem to remember a CGI featurette on PoA - could she be changing her mind?)Disneykid wrote:The Harry Potter series

Actually, I thought it was the executives at WB who thought revealing too much would spoil the magic, not J.K. I don't think she actually cares how much behind the scenes stuff is revealed about the films, especially since she very freely discusses behind the scenes tidbits that go on when she's writing the books. Either way, someone must be changing his mind since PoA is the meatiest of the HP DVD's released thus far (though it's still a far cry from what it should be).2099net wrote:You won't get it. Ever. As i've said many times, the best videos are not made from prints, prints are usually the less suitable element to do transfers from, unless all pre-prints elements are damaged or lost, unless that happens prints don't need to be restored, prints are not restored, prints are struck from restored intermediates negatives or other preprint elements. Prints are just a copy. So stop thinking that they have to restore printsThe Black Cauldron - Certainly a newly restored anamorphic print wouldn't hurt

Also. Some of the requests posted here exists already on better editions on DVD in other regions, just not in R1

I'll just mainly stick to Disney titles, since we are on a Disney forum.
Robin Hood
The transfer is okay, yet rather grainy to the point where it just looks silly and could do with a Lowry transfer ala Alice in Wonderland and Bambi. I think that proper supplements should also be included, even if it just comes up to something along the lines of the supplements on a solid 1 disc set like Peter Pan or the Region 1 Dumbo.
The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under
Ditto Robin Hood.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
I second what Disneykid said, so no need to explain further.
Alice in Wonderland
I really like this 2 disc DVD. The supplements are very good, but could be expanded on a bit more to get into the fully excellent territory (example; more Mary Blair!
). I should also note that this needs re-releasing in Europe at least, with 2 discs instead of 1, pathetic considering that a cheapquel like The Lion King 1 1/2 (LK3 over here) was still a 2 disc. I can import, but why should I be made to, Ei$ner?
Oh, and destroy the original source of the Virtual Tea Party...
The Hunchback of Notre Dame/Hercules
I would buy these if released in a special edition ala Mulan or Pocahontas.
Finding Neverland
Nice supplements, but as for the transfer...too grainy for a modern movie, in my opinion...

I'm a picky person so I find faults in so many DVDs out there from picture and sound quality to poor menus and packaging. I could name so many easily.
A few off the top of my head...
Herbie movies - I thought they did a lackluster job on these. Any movies not in their OAR needs a new release. For these movies it looks like they didn't spend a whole lot of time working on them.
Superman movies - They were released ages ago and are in need of new additions. They'll be arriving in the next year or so though obviously.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - It's one of my favourite movies and it does have a regular addition and a special edition but it would be nice to see a combined version. The special edition has the uncut version and I can see why they left those scenes out... keeping them in screwed with continuity and while theya re interesting scenes I prefer the movie without them but I would still want an ultimate edition with both versions of the movie.
Poltergiest - Another of my all-time favourites that could use an update.
The Last Unicorn - Has anyone seen the R1 DVD quality? It's atrocious. (bad video, sound, pan & scan)

I agree with you with 3/4. I haven't seen 'Gosford Park' yet so I can't comment there.castleinthesky wrote:The Black Cauldron

The Black Cauldron should get a new release like all one disc DVDs.
Princess Mononoke and all of the Ghibli movies should get better releases eventually. The DVDs that they came out were good but since theya re some of my favourite movies I wish for ultimate editions loaded with more features than I can imagine. I wouldn't mind a collector's set for them either with a book and cel and all that. Princess Mononoke deserves it the most.
The Batman movies will be re-released this fall when Batman Begins hits DVD.
