Maybe they're narrowed down the number of discs in both regions? Seems logical, seeing as this "3 disc set" is really your average 2-disc set (since the movie is spread out on 2 discs ).

Unless you want crappy picture quality, then yes. The movie itself is three hours, and there's going to be a branching feature where you can choose to watch the deleted scenes (which total about an hour) in their proper context. Four hours crammed onto one disc is not good, especially since this'll have multiple audio tracks crammed in, as well.

I don't think our 4-Disc has been paired down to a 3-Disc. The press release stated that Titanic would be arriving in both a 2-Disc Special Edition and a 4-Disc Collector's Edition. The 3-Disc art DVDanswers has posted says Special Edition, which leads me to believe that the 2-Disc SE has been upgraded to a 3-Disc SE (probably to give the film more room to breathe) and the 4-Disc CE will probably have completely new cover art.

Movies as long as Titanic are split into two discs so there's more space on the DVD-ROM for better picture and audio quality. If you cram a whole 3+ hour movie into one disc, it's going to suffer. Take the Beauty and the Beast DVD for example, they included 3 versions of the film in Disc 1, and the image suffered with lots of problems. So Titanic will benefit from this, just the like Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions.

Yes. The movie will be presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, mastered in high definition. (That doesn't mean Titanic will only play on high-definition sets, but the transfer gives the picture more detail and more stable colors than that of regular DVD mastering, plus the bit rate will be higher.)

The sound will be remixed in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX (some people refer to it as 6.1 EX), but since there's going to be deleted footage via branching, I doubt there'll be room for a DTS 6.1 ES track. (I think Gary Rydstrom is also working on this film, as well as Toy Story.)

The extras will include a commentary from Cameron and presumably from other crew members. DiCaprio and Winslet have agreed to do new interviews as such for the DVD, whether they'll do a commentary is yet to be confirmed. And there's loads of new stuff they have in store for fans.

Also, isn't there some technical thing with PAL and NTSC, where PAL uses more space than NTSC? I can't remember where I read it, possibly here by deathie, but there's something about the amount of lines per frame or pixels per frame or something, and PAL has more than NTSC, which results in better picture quality, so it takes up more space on the disc (which is perhaps why it's spread out over more discs).

Like we told you last week, Titanic: Collector's Edition is now officially a three-disc set. Many European retailers, however, are still showing a four-disc set. Confused? Join the club. One cool thing to add is that it looks like there will be four audio commentary tracks. Hopefully Paramount will announce the full specs soon so that all of this confusion will come to an end.

I don't really see what all the confusion is about. Titanic was filmed and had the vast majority of it's funding from Fox. Paramount only stepped in at the last minute when the filming overran and as a result got domestic rights.

To me, it seems obvious Fox would own most of the behind-the-scenes footage of the filming, and perhaps Paramount doesn't want to pay to licence it all for America.

Also, the film is distributed by two different companies. Even when films have the same distributor worldwide, we still get different versions (check of the 1 hour exclusive on the totally Buena Vista owned Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy). Differences happen all the time, its why most of us non-Americans import. Occassionaly the non-American discs are better, but most of the time, they are worse. But there's no hard and fast rule.

Finally, I will repeat again, just because a set has an extra disc, it doesn't mean it will have more information on it. There are plenty of examples of this, from France's 2 disc Catwoman and Freaks to Buena Vista's own TV on DVD releases (which are all 4 disc overseas). It could well be the specs for the different sets are the same despite the disc count.

Well I hate to break up all this discussion over content with something as superfluous as cover art, but I'm gonna. I'm a little surprised that no one has mentioned it yet on here (or am I just missing it?), but I think the revision to the R1 CE cover art really takes away from the cover. Bonus features are great, but we don't need them splashed over the cover, and as long as we aren't calling this the "James Cameron Edition", I'd rather see the ship (un-squished) on the cover than him (nothing against James).

I think a 4-Disc Set sounds like a better package for the biggest movie of all time, but is not like I watch any extras though.
