I just wasted five bucks on this piece of garbage. How can anyone compare this to Disney animation or any other animation from the US? I am really disappointed..........maybe I was expecting more. Japanese Anime' and I don't see eye to eye, I guess I am just spoiled by all the Disney animation that I was brought up on.
I don't consider any of the Japanese films as Disney films. They are distributed by Disney and that's it.
I guess I just don't understand what people see in this type of animation.
Warner Bros. and Walt Disney were and are still the best there is, hands down.

How can Howl's Moving Castle be garbage when it was in a theatre? You have said that if the movie isn't in the theatre it isn't good enough for you collection. What happened?dvdjunkie wrote:I just wasted five bucks on this piece of garbage. How can anyone compare this to Disney animation or any other animation from the US? Would you kind telling us why you disliked it instead of just saying Disney's better and leaving?

Chill dude, I grew up with Disney and Warner Bros animations myself, and I still love them. American animations and Japanese animations have their own styles, (they're both interesting in their own way). I don't know why you think people see Japanese films as Disney films, they're totally different styles. You must be bored and probably just wanted to heat up a topic to laugh at yourself and others.dvdjunkie wrote:I just wasted five bucks on this piece of garbage. Japanese animators did study western animation particularily Disney (you can see Disney's influence sometimes with the big eyes in anime), but they eventually found their niche and their animation style evolved over time. Besides the animation style, their stories became more adult, and this is particularily thanks to their famous 1970's sci-fi anime TV series called "Space Battleship Yamato" (Star Blazers) http://www.desslok.com/INFO/history.htm. This is what I like about anime, with the exceptions of TV programs like Pokemon and Digimon (because they're intended for mostly children and teens, though I suppose adults can watch them too if they're really into it), most Japanese animations are not limted in a particular age group, they create stories for all different ages. (BTW half the books sold in Japan are comic books, and many of the comics turn into feature animated films.) Anything goes in Japanese animations, you're only limited to your imagination.

Just because it is in the theaters doesn't mean I will buy it. I think that Japanese Anime is a step above the stick cartoons you watch on Saturday morning. The colors are beautiful, but not realiistic. And the mouth movements don't go with the dialogue.
I own "Swept Away" and cherish it with all of my other animated movies, Disney and non-Disney. But I don't think this in the same league as that film.
Everyone has there own likes and dislikes, and I am sure it is just my age showing through, but I prefer animation done with real motion and real color, and even sometimes a real story. As much as I hated Pocohontas I would rather watch it ten times before I suffer through Howl's Moving Castle again.

Were those the only reasons you didn't like it? Animation is not supposed to be realistic, and so what if the mouth movements don't go with the dialogue? No anime works that way. I don't think those are good reasons to dislike the movie, but if you don't like it, I won't try to change your mind.dvdjunkie wrote:The colors are beautiful, but not realiistic. Again Pasta67, I really think it just my age. Japanese cartoons are for a lot younger bunch of people, and I am too set in my ways to appreciate much of any thing else. I just prefer US animation wherever possible although I know that there are some animated movies out there that have been made in other countries including Japan. I guess it is just the fact that Anime" doesn't have the motion of Disney animation, and sometime the voices are so squealy that it is like fingernails on a blackboard...........yikes!!!!!........But I will tell you this, I love your George Gobel quate. He was a very good friend of mine and I worked in a movie called "The Birds and the Bees" with him. He was a remarkable comedian as well as a very nice person.

For those of you that have been questioning, Howl's is probably not Miyazaki's last film. I had made previous topics about his next few projects: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... t=miyazaki and http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... t=miyazaki
I had just watched Howl's Moving Castle yesterday. I have to say I was amazed. The film was better than Spirited Away, in my opinion. Miyazaki once again showed us that he could deliver us a great family movie. The animation was beautiful. Every scene blew my mind. It was excellent. The score by Hisiashi was again great. It wasn't as good as Castle in the Sky or Spirited Away's score, but it was still breathtaking. The voice overs were all good in my opinion. The story is the only part I had a problem with. It was puzzling at times. By the end of the story it all came together for me, but some feeble-minded people would not be able to understand the story. But other than that it was terrific. The movie is better than anything Dreamworks and Disney have made since Beauty and the Beast(but not including Mononoke and SA).
By the way does anyone know when Howl's soundtrack will be released?
My new Ghibli ratings*:
1)Castle in the Sky
2)Princess Mononoke
3)Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
4)Howl's Moving Castle
5)Porco Rosso
6)Spirited Away
7)Kiki's Delivery Service
8)Grave of the Fireflies
9)The Cat Returns

Well, I don't know if this is because of the movies I've chosen to see, or if the movie industry really is turning out garbage after piece of garbage, but Howl's Moving Castle is still my number one movie of 2005. It's th only title I see myself considering a piece of true film art and able to proudly put on a top 10 list. (That and maybe Nobody Knows. Wow, a Japanese live-action movie, who would have thunk it?
 )
Movies I plan to see in the near future: Cinderella Man, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and War of the Worlds, all on DVD!
(I have no problem short changing studios and "artists" who willingly make formulaic junk; I know I'm not going to love any of these.) I will also be seeing Charlie and the Chocolate Movie and Me, And You, And Everyone We Know in theaters.
