Walt Disney Company/Roy E. Disney War Over: Disney Saved!(?)

Post by AwallaceUNC »

It looks like the "Save Disney" war that has been as epic as a movie in itself has concluded today, with concessions from both sides, but an overall victory for Roy E. Disney and Stanley Gold. I consider it quite good news on the whole:

Joint Statement from The Walt Disney Co. and Roy E. Disney and Stanley P. Gold

BURBANK, Calif. (July 8, 2005) -- The Walt Disney Company, Roy E. Disney and Stanley P. Gold announced today that they have agreed to put aside the differences that have characterized their relationship over the past several years. Messrs. Disney and Gold have agreed not to run a rival slate of directors or submit shareholder resolutions for the next five years. Messrs. Disney and Gold have also agreed to dismiss all their pending lawsuits against the Company. In reestablishing ties with him and his family, the Company has named Roy E. Disney Director Emeritus and a consultant. The Company also reaffirmed its commitment to the rotation of committee members and chairpersons on its Board committees as currently required by the Company's Corporate Governance Guidelines. In putting aside their differences, the Company noted Mr. Disney's long time devotion to the Company and welcomed the reestablishment of a relationship with him and his family. Messrs. Disney and Gold expressed confidence in Mr. Iger's leadership, and as Mr. Eisner retires after 21 years with the Company, they acknowledged his contribution to the Company over the years.

From an email I recieved from www.savedisney.com :

Yay! This is good news! I'm glad that Roy Disney is back with his family's company that his first uncle started decades ago! Hooray! :D

Really far-fetched idea!!!! Maybe they delayed the Secrets...of Disneyland DVD so they can add a segment or something with Roy and the Disney family!!! :o :)

Interesting, Kram! Hmm... I'm hoping Roy is at DL (or WDW :-P) on 7/17 now!

I've gotta say I'm surprised at how very little discussion this has gotten... this is arguably the biggest piece of Disney corporate news since it was announced that Eisner was leaving. :?:

I'm too busy moping about the fact that Vintage Mickey didn't come with a slipcover to care about the future of the Disney company.

This is great news. I'm glad Roy won and Eisner lost, but the reason I haven't responded is because I don't know every little detail of what Roy just won. I know the basics, but what all does Roy get for winning the trial?

Sorry for not knowing. I feel guilty considering I really wanted Roy to win and I don't even know what he won.

Well actually Roy and Stan have dropped their lawsuit because they essentially won outside of the courtroom. The areas in which they've "won" the war:

*Public perception/support
*Shareholder support/no confidence vote
*Because of the above two, among other things, they have leverage to keep pressure on the company for a while, at least... they have 'political capital' to speak
*Eisner is gone in a few months
*Roy Director Emeritus (though just how much this will mean remains to be seen... and what about Stan?)
*Roy consultant to company (ditto to above parentheses), meaning Disney has rejoined with Disney
*Committees will actually be rotating their members/chairs
*A CEO who is at least preferable to Eisner is coming in, now under some advisement/pressure/watchful eye of Roy and the public
*They come off looking like the ultimate winners here and managed to save face for the few criticisms they've received

The Disney Company had some wins of its own:

*Lawsuits against the company and individual directors dropped
*The board remains intact
*Iger will still be CEO
*Roy and Stan aren't back on the board (though they say that's bc they aren't interested in it)
*With Roy back on their side, they've managed to save face
*EDIT: I forgot a big one - they aren't going to be forced into full disclosure regarding the CEO search

Win-Win for both:

*This is good for their stock
*Pixar will most likely be coming up
*Both Disney parties on the same side and a new CEO looks promising for financial future

I hope Cinderella 3 gets cancelled Image lol, can't help it but that's all I really care about. I truly believe the huge amount of sequels coming this way soon are damaging. Of course damage has already been done but it has to end now.

I guess Iger is more interested in becoming the man that turned Disney around, like Eisner before him, than simply continue trashing the company like Eisner .. also before him :P

Well, it looks as if Disney has been saved, but on a completely random note, what will happen to savedisney.com? There's not as much use for it now, so what will be done with it? Will it just be deleted off the web?

Who knows what Bob Iger has in store. But i think before any decisions like that are made i think it would be best to see how Chicken Little and A Day With Wilbur Robinson do. Although i think Disney are going to realise the excitement of there being a CGI film is wearinf off fast, soon people arent going to want to see something just because its CGI, they'll want a good story, nice characters and good animation. The thing with CGI is is that it doesnt have to look like how pixar make there films it can be done in many ways.

Great news!! Roy and family really NEED to be part of the company.

How do you know SaveDisney.com will be added to Go.com? Sounds great, but why would Disney Co. want it?

I'm going to have to get back to that site.... in the chance the content doesn't get "Saved!"

I think what he meant (and what the :P -smilie was saying) is that he was only kidding. I don't think it will be added to go.com, but that would be funny :P

Yay for Roy Disney! ^_^ He's truly dedicated to his uncle's dream! ^_^

And even more, I'll be looking forward to when Eisner finally leaves. True, under his reign we've had some of the best movies ever, but what he has done to the Company for the past 5 years or so hasn't been the best. Who knows, maybe with Iger in charge, we'll start to see less of these crappy Disney Channel movies and teen stars, that would make me happy. :D

Roy and Disney end war

Post by Disney Duster »

This is TERRIFIC NEWS!!!!! THIS IS SO GREAT TO HEAR! And to touch on what Kenai said, I'm sure Walt Disney stopped spinning in his grave for a second to shed a tear of joy, and he's very proud of Roy.

Mmm, maybe Roy learned a thing or two from the company takeover page of his friend Jobs when he was made "consultant" to Apple a few days before he took over Apple AGAIN completely after being dismissed from the company he founded a few years previous
