Well they are not officially Bond movies, but the Bond movies, as movies, took a lot from those Hitchcock films which you can see all the more if you read the original Fleming novels. For example compare the crop dusting plane attacking Cary Grant in North By Northwest to the helicopter attacking Connery in From Russia With Love, etc etc.

So anytime I introduce someone to the Bond world, I start with Notorious and follow up with the others before getting to Dr No ;)

60+ years of Bondage!

There's also another bond/hitchcock connection, Hitch wanted to sign Connery for a multi picture deal (to replace his aging stars, Stewart and Grant) but he refused cus he didn't want to be stuck up again like he was playing Bond. So if that had happened, maybe Connery would have been the agents/spies/whatever in The Torn Curtain and Topaz, etc making them better movies (and with better budgets and filmaking on top?) or maybe we woulda gotten some other Hitchconians thrillers

(I also think Star Trek V woulda played a lot different and better if Connery had played Spock's brother instead of Indiana's daddy but that's another story :P)

35mm's of separation
and the wings of a butterfly

Well, it probably was a good thing he chose Indy's daddy over Spock's brother. Star Trek V was not that great a movie, it had its moments (row, row, row your boat, any camping, etc.), but the story seemed very weak.

Also...I don't think the pointed ears would have looked well on Connery.

I'd love for them to re-release all the Bonds. This is a set I wouldn't mind owning, but didn't pick up last year. I was on Amazon the other day and noticed they were out of Vol 2 of the James Bond Collection http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... ance&s=dvd
I wonder if it's OOP so they can come out with a new set. I'm one of the few who doesn't have the existing set and would buy a new one.

It took me awhile to search for this, but I finally found it.

Any word on new supplements for other bond films, netty? Particularly more for Goldfinger, and any for the other 3 I have: Man with the Golden Gun, Living Daylights, Goldeneye.

I'm not sure it will be a boxset. But various ULTIMATE edition Bond film extras are being passed by the BBFC.

There's also new Ultimate Editions of Silence of the Lambs, Raging Bull and The Terminator due (these actually have released dates in the UK).

From The Digital Bits
Around the Net today, the official Roger Moore website has indicated that Sir Roger has just begun recording new audio commentary tracks for the seven Bond films in which he starred. His first recording session, for A View to a Kill, was completed this last weekend. Word is, these tracks will be included on new Ultimate Editions of the Bond films set to be released by Sony in 2006 (and no doubt timed to coincide with the theatrical debut of Casino Royale). You can bet they'll likely be issued on Blu-ray Disc format in addition to standard DVD.
Nice to know they're at least giving us a year to expect them. Maybe now I don't have to keep hunting in the used sections! (and I don't wanna pay $100+ for the 3 still-in-print boxsets either.)

Well here's news, which will surprise nobody:
Apart from the release of "Casino Royale", Sony say that the Bond franchise :

"will be re-energised with 20 Ultimate Editions of the movies, all remastered in double disc form fully loaded with extras"
Well, we could guess the releases were being held back for the new film, but this at least says the new discs will be 2 disc sets.

What they really need to do is unearth and secure the rights to the Criterion Collection LaserDisc commentary tracks for these three films and put them on the DVDs. Those three commentary tracks are some of the best that I've ever heard.

Aren't the Criterion commentary tracks safely guarded in the reptilian royal chambers? :P

I think the problem was that those commentaries were in several instances way too candid and "the producers" of the Bonds films didn't like that so Criterion was "adviced" to strip them from subsequent new printings of the Laserdiscs of those? The story is a little fuzzy in my mind as i don't have any Criterion Bond (MGM/UA's looked better, some of which also had a separate music/effects track which i haven't checked if they are available on the DVDs)

Woohoo, two-disc sets! If they're going to be released to support Casino Royale, I'm guessing a fall/winter DVD release? Think they could also be Blu-Ray as well?

I'm wondering though if they're going to be released all at once (like how the Pink Panther re-releases were in January), or if we'll see volumes again (like how they had 3 different volumes come out though the films weren't chronological).

I don't own those LDs, either, but I borrowed them a few years back, and yes, that's what I liked about those commentaries -- extremely candid and insightful. What I would like to do is take the transfer from the upcoming SE DVD and add the commentaries from the Criterion CAV LDs along with the two MGM commentantaries. That would rock.

Well, I finished the first three Sean Connery James Bond 007 films (Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger with the Criterion Collection commentary tracks perfectly synced to the ANAMORPHIC WS transfers lifted bit-for-bit from the OOP Special Edition DVDs! I've also included the film soundtracks, and the MGM commentary tracks that came originally with the OOP SE DVDs. In addition, I put the chapter stops exactly where the SE DVDs have them for all three films. Yes... and it counts!

Here's a link to a page which lets you see all the specs for the new Ultimate Bond discs.

http://www.zetaminor.com/news_archive/a ... d_2006.htm

Sadly, the short title descriptions only don't offer much insight. However, I see Sony are paying to licence some BBC material from its archives (especially for the late 70's/80's films) so some rare treats are in store.
