TV on DVD...anybody else *not* an addict?

Post by Wonderlicious »

When it comes to TV season boxsets, am I in the minority by not being all that interested in them?

I've never been a huge fan of TV, to tell the truth. Aside from The Simpsons and a few other things, I hardly like a lot of the stuff that make it's way to the box. In addition to that, I find it hard to get through so much...sure, I can get through a movie and a few bonus features, but 25+ episodes can be a bit difficult to get through, and that's without bonus features thrown in. Therefore, I don't seem to have much television related things on DVD.

I understand that what I've just written could be controversial to some, as many UDers love TV seasons on DVD (they feature a lot as recent purchases in the new DVD thread, and they have other threads devoted to the things). So, to ask my question again if you've forgotten what it originally was (obviously you've forgotten that this forum also has a site attatched to it... :headshake:), are you like myself in not being fond of TV on DVD?

You don't have to sit through all 25 episodes at once, you know.

I love my box sets. Especially shows that aren't on the air anymore, such as THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, I LOVE LUCY, TAXI, LAVERNE & SHIRLEY, HAPPY DAYS, etc. (Yes, sometimes - and that means SOMETIMES - they are aired on TV Land. No longer on Nick @ Nite.)

I'm not too fond of buying box sets. I have a few on my wish list, but apart from that I avoid them since I know I won't be seeing them often. Here's my wishlist:

Friends (#1-10)
Desperate Housewives
Looney Tunes Golden Collection (it's kinda like a TV serie)
Xena Warrior Princess

Other than that, no desire what-so-ever in TV shows. But that's just me! :)

The only season box sets I buy for myself are of certain animated shows that I can't live without.

I know that, but when you've not got all the time in the world, getting through all the episodes can seem like it will take forever, which is kind of like the scenario for me...

I'm only interested in a select few. They have to be one of my all-time favorites for me to even consider them and thus far only Andy Griffith, Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm have made the cut.

Meh unless they hardly ever show it on t.v.(like the Bullwinkle show and Taxi :D ) I don't really care for buying shows on t.v.

I'll never understand why people buy all the seasons of I Love Lucy or Friends because they show those shows on t.v. nonstop! I mean I could just watch a certain show nonstop and I can see all the episodes without having to pay so much money. So unless it's a show they don't show alot, than I'd save the money!

I LOVE LUCY is *NOT* shown on the air all the time. This USED to be the case, but no longer. It's no longer on Nick @ Nite and it is rarely shown on TV LAND.

This is the BEST television show of all time - and I want it preserved! I have pre-ordered each season and have enjoyed it thoroughly.

Yeah...AND? It's a TV series. Of course it will take a long time. It's the same as watching a few movies. Except a TV show could be considered a really LONG movie. ;-)

Well it's about time! However they do show it on FOX quite alot! They showed it so many times though we just knew what was going to happen in every episode. As you can tell, I don't really like the show!

Yeah I don't much see I Love Lucy on tv anymore. Least not when I'm looking. Unfortuantely the seasons are pretty expensive. Sigh. That's one season I'd like to get but its too much.

I'm not that big a fan of TV shows on DVD because...well, it'd be too expensive for me to get every show I'd want in season sets. I limit myself to the essentials, tv shows I love enough to be willing to purchase it.

The Golden Girls
I Love Lucy
Coupling (which I've completed unless they're going to do a 5th season)

I don't have any season sets of Friends, just the "best of" for seasons 1-4, but I plan on getting season sets.

And of course, if I see it cheap somewhere, I'll get those compilation DVDs, just to have a sample, like MTM, Three's Company (well, just the first season which is six episodes), and Family Guy (Freakin' Sweet Collection).

Well, I like TV on DVD. But I don't get every one I'm slightly interested in. I only get ones that I really like as box sets are expensive.

I'm in the same boat as most.. I currently am only collecting 3 TV shows on DVD, Cheers, MASH (The best show ever on TV), and Charmed..

Well, Garfield and Friends too.. but that's animation.. that's a whole different categoryy for me.

I don't mind paying 30-40 bucks for 1 season.. Howevery, CSI (I'd like to have that) and Sopranos.. charging 80+ for one season.. ahh.. They can keep em.. I'll wait on those.

I'm a huge fan of Star Trek: Voyager (the ONLY Star Trek of ANYTHING that I like - and I've seen samples of all.) Those sets are at least $99 EACH! And there are 7 seasons!!!

I don't have TV on DVD. They're too expensive and then there's the case of I don't like all the shows in a particular season. One series if it ever came on DVD would be Swiss Family Robinson with Heather Graham. I really liked that series.

I think TV shows on DVD is an awesome idea. The only sets I have are a couple seasons of the Simpsons and Family Guy. I'm not exactly hooked (yet), but I'm planning on picking up the first season of Desperate Housewives and maybe both seasons of Nip/Tuck. Along the line I'll probaly get Friends as well.

I only buy a few shows on DVD

Buffy (all 7, though I noticed a new DVD of the best Spike episodes came out, so I'll get that)
Gargoyles
Punky Brewster (need to get season 2)
My Little Pony
In Living Color (need to get season 2&3)

I'm also a big fan of TV on DVD. I'm not obsessed with it; I only have seasons 1-2 of Boy Meets World and 1-4 of The Simpsons, but I plan on getting season 5. I also want the Family Guy volumes when I get the time to get them. I don't think it's a bad idea; it's like having your own little piece of history in your house. I love having TV shows on DVD for the nostalgia and remembering what it was like to see those shows back then. Except for the fact that it takes more time to watch, like Wondy said, having TV shows is pretty much the same thing as having movies.

Well, Wonderlicious, it appears not too many people are in your camp on this one, as this thread quickly turned into a TV shows on DVD appreciation thead.

As for myself, I love collecting my favorite shows on DVD. There's a certain contentment that comes from being able to have at your finger-tips every single beloved episode of your favorite series uncut, remastered and in its original broadcast order.

Haha, Wonder you should've bolded that. ;)

I'm not the type of person who gets the TV Show DVD the week (or month) that it comes out. I can wait...for the sale! :) Like SIMPSONS, I can wait for the sale again. Or even FRIENDS!

But for shows like WHO's THE BOSS and DARK ANGEL that don't show on TV anymore (well, I don't see them on TV anymore..), those are essentials to get. :p
