Things you do to make your first viewing more special?

Post by Disney-Fan »

Well, now that The Little Mermaid is pretty much set in stone I've done the worst. I've deleted this movie from my computer. I've also deleted any trace of songs or information regarding The Little Mermaid I had. I've done the same for Hunchback. Not a trace left from those movies. Why you ask? So the experience can be more satisfying! This is a great sacrifice for me (not seeing The Little Mermaid for over a year) but the end result, I'm sure, will be worth it. I know when I finally have the R2 Platinum Edition (and the gift set, and the soundtrack :P ) the experience will be so much better.

I was wondering, does anyone else here do this? Go that extra mile to make your first viewing of a new DVD a more unique experience? I've found that I feel a greater sence of nostalgia and enjoyment when I only vaguely remember the film. After seeing Aladdin not too long ago after years without it, the feeling of seeing it again was so good. I've decided to recreate that exact experience for any childhood movie of mine! It's gonna be tough, but I'll survive! :D

So, does anyone else do this? What do you do to make your viewing a more pleasent one?

I remember a debate about this in an earlier thread. I can't seem to find it. If the moderators do, feel free to merge threads,

If I know a big DVD release is on its way that I'm going to pick up, I usually stay away from watching that movie until that time comes. (I don't avoid the music, though). That's the case with The Little Mermaid. I haven't seen it in years. I only have the VHS... sure, my school has the Limited Issue and I can watch it any time, but I'd rather hold out for the platinum. Ditto for Hunchback and Hercules.

I hold out on music because it's such a big part of Disney movies. To get those same initial goosebumps again after hearing "Part of Your World", is simply an amazing experience!

I just saw The Little Mermaid for the first time about two months ago, and it was great. I'm not watching it until I get the Platinum so that it will be better. As for Hunchback, I can see that as much as I want and it will always be as good as if I hadn't seen it in years. I haven't see Hercules since the movie came out in theaters back in 1997, so seeing that again when (or if) the DVD comes out will be excellent.

I've listened to deleted songs from LITTLE MERMAID a year ago. One is a song Ursula sings. I'm sure they will be included on the DVD.

As for anything "special" - I avoid watching the film or listening to music until the DVD is released.

And when I first watch it - I watch it alone, in my bedroom/dorm room and treat myself to something special to eat. Then the next day I watch the bonus features.

Same here, MovieMusicals. When I get a movie I've never seen before or is new on DVD, I cannot and will not watch it with anyone else until I've seen it by myself. I just end up enjoying it better. When I watch with somebody else, I always do whatever I can to make sure they enjoy the movie, and I end up missing it.

I also watch it alone. I seem to enjoy it better and I feel more free to laugh and cry without feeling uncomfortable. I love seeing some of the short features right after the movie so I can see a teaser of what's in store! :D

I do exactly the same thing, I got rid of my dvds for Lady and the Tramp and Jungle book in about january and i'm in the process of selling 101 dalmatians. I held out from watching bambi for about 18 months when i discovered it was coming.

I also haven't seen tarzan in about a year either as i'm waiting to see it again in august, same thing with toy story and toy story 2 i've sold those dvds too.

It really does make you appreciate a movie you love more I find if you haven't seen it for ages and when you do you been dying to see it for sooooooo long you love it even more!

Haha, yeah. I starve myself of the movie. Even if I get the movie, I don't watch it a lot......so I won't get sick of it. My brother plays the seasons 1 -3 of Family Guy everyday. x_x

I don't have enough will power to stop watching a Disney movie for a year! :o

I guess what I usually do is watch the DVD on the big screen LCD television in my living room when it's dark and I turn all the lights off. That gives it a more cinematic experience. :)

I, too, avoid watching a film when I know a new DVD release is on the way. I've done it for all of the Platinums thus far as well as the SE's. It can be pretty hard, though. It's been about two years since I've watched Cinderella, and all this talk of the Platinum Edition has been giving me withdrawals. I'm itching to pull out my VHS copy and watch it, but I won't because I want my movie experience to be fresh when I view it on DVD for the first time. I'm right now doing the same thing for Lady and the Tramp, The Little Mermaid, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book are far away enough for me to watch both on VHS one last time sometime this year.

Actually, just this past weekend I decided to bring out one of the Disney videos to watch. i chose Sleeping Beauty but I really wanted to watch Cinderella because I dont think I've seen it in about 2 years! I vowed not to watch it until the Platinum Edition comes out!
For the Little Mermaid, i decided not to watch my classic edition video again-hopefully never again, i wouldnt want it to wear out or break. its getting close. anyway, i downloaded it...(sorry, i know, but if disney would allow us to purchase it on dvd, i definetly would have)...and i burned it onto a custom dvd so i can watch it that way! :) October 2006 is still kinda far away so i think i'll watch it atleast once more before then but i'll try to resist the temptation!

I know it sounds silly but to me, having LOTS of buttered popcorn turns a great movie into a fantastic movie.

I dunno. . . watching a new Disney film for the first time has always been special. When I was younger, I usually went to the theater to see them with both of my parents, with the exception of Beauty and the Beast which was just with my mom. Great memories there.

There were times later in my life that I'd go by myself, but that was more for the fact that I didn't have anyone to go with me than anything else.

I always see them with my boyfriend now. He knows how important they are to me, so it's always treated as a special event.

The same goes when we get a new Disney DVD. Lights out, snacks in hand, and volume up. :D

Amen to that! I find a movie to be a much better experience when you have a movie type snack next to you! It makes you feel in a cinematic mood. It's a hard feeling to explain. :P

Great thoughts everyone. I remembered some saying they do this, but apparently most of us really enjoy the experience of seeing it for the first time, again.

Im the same as most of you guys. I hold on watching the dvd if theres a new release of it coming soon. I havent watched Tarzan for over a year so i can watch it and enjoy little bits i forgot about when i buy the SE in afew weeks. I also watched Lilo & Stitch a month ago and wont watch that until i get the new SE. With Toy Story i watched both of them last week and im hoping maybe i can hold out until November to watch them again, actually i will hold out until November. :D
With the rest of the platinums i havent seen The Little Mermaid, Lady And The Tramp, Cinderella, The Jungle Book and 101 Dalmatians for over 5/6 years so they will be more like first viewings as i cant remember much.

I'm glad. I remember after hearing the lyrics for "Silence is Golden," that I wanted to know what it would've sounded like if it had been in the movie. Even the deleted songs would sound pretty good.

I would never last if I had to give up watching the Little Mermaid until October 2006! I like to watch it once a month.

Take my word on this, you should hold out. Yeah, it's hard but the end result is worth it!
