DVDSoon vs Playusa

Post by Wonderlicious »

Before anyone starts ranting about little yellow stickers on the DVD covers as these sites are Canadian, please shut up as I don't mind them. I think that we all know who this warning is aimed at.

I was going to get the local Region 2 copy of Cinderella, but I'm somewhat tempted to get the Region 1 gift set as firstly, it looks nice and most importantly, there's gonna be one less person buying a product from the terrible and ironically titled company Buena Vista Home Entertainment United Kingdom (in case anyone is wondering, Buena Vista means beautiful sight in Spanish ).

I'm thinking about importing through DVDSoon or Playusa. I understand that the prices at DVDSoon are generally cheaper, but I hear that their shipping takes quite a bit of time, where as Playusa.com ships way before the release date (I believe somebody here recieved the Aladdin gift set from them a week before the release date!). And being the impatient fool that I am, I'm leaning towards the Play site, especially since I don't think I'll have to use my parents to get stuff for me since I have a funny feeling DVDSoon won't accept Solo/Maestro and I really don't want to make a fuss.

What do you think I should do? Or should I just get the Region 2 regular edition.

Well whoever told you the shipping from DVDSoon is slow is absolutely crackers! Usually it takes about 7 days, which to be fair isn't bad. PlayUSA will be quicker because the DVDs are already in the country!

But I ALWAYS get my R1 DVDs from DVDSoon, anyway because as you say it is cheap, in fact DVDSoon is the cheapest place anywhere to get R1 DVDs online period!

I mean at Play USA the Cinderella giftset is CA$67.49

whereas at DVDSOON it is CA$40.16

If you are thinking of ordering a lot of R1 i would think about becoming a fidelity i card memeber, because as a fidelity i card member you get an additional 5-20% off the titles plus free shipping!

It costs about £20 a year to become a fidelity i card member, but if you order a lot of R1 dvds (like me) it pays for itself after a few days!

At a time, DVDSoon was really the best site to sell region 1 websites (of course, if you don't mind about the yellow sorta stickers ;-) and really often, they did ship a preorder title before the release date, plus the prices were very interresting.

It's still the case in a way, but the site is less performant than it used to be and the price may be somewhat higher for some titles (I recentyl bought 2 TV series on dvdsoon and realized fter that they were both cheaper on amazon.com, including the delivery to France for amazon.com whereas it's free at DVDSoon). Plus, now, if you order titles that have been released more than last week, you may be waiting very long before the shipment. Thanks God, It's not always the case, but it happens mroe and more. Plus, they're really bad at informing you on the advancement of your order.

So, my advice would be to compare first all the websites before buying, and if you buy through DVDSoon and have the feeling that you're waiting to long after you order, jsut cancel, get your credit refunded an order it somewhere else. As for me, I buy all my Disney DVDs on amazon.com (but mostly because of the yellow circle on canadian DVD ;-), it's not long, not so expenseive and the big "plus" comapred to DVDSoon : amazon.com is constant and is not going to "lie" about the disponibility of the products ('coz more and more, DVDs are stated as being "in stock (48 to 72 hours)" on dvdsoon but you wait a month before they ship them to you.. Again, not always the case but it did happen to me several times). But there may be other sites where you can make a good deal.
Chandler (to Phoebe, over the phone) : Listen, Joey isn't gonna be here tonight so why don't you come over and I'll let you uh.. feel my bicep; or maybe more...

Well i've always got my region 1 dvds from playusa.com, i dont really know why i think its because i got most of my R2 dvds from play.com and i seem to have no problems and also i find the delivery really quick. So when i wanted some R1 dvds i figured playusa.com would be a good place to get them.

One thing i have noticed with Dvdsoon.com is that before the release of a dvd they seem to have very cheap prices compared to playusa.com and amazon.com. But then once the dvd is released the prices go up and are roughly if not the same price as playusa.com and amazon.com.
Also not that i know Dvdsoon dont accept Solo it looks like i wont be buying from them even if they are cheaper, i'll just stick with Playusa.
But hey i learnt something today, that the dvds are already in the country, i always thought they wernt. Strange really...

To answer your question Wonderlicous i think you should get it from Playusa or just get the R2 edition. Since if you use Playusa you wont have to use anyone elses credit card, but then if thats not a problem then its up to you at the end of the day.
