it's not really 'rock' cause if you listened to it, it still has the pop-y Backstreet sound, but some of the songs are a bit edgier, like "Poster Girl" for example and "My Beautiful Woman"

well, that's usually how it goes. it's not entirely possible that musicians be in the limelight ALL the time. They release an album, promote it all over the place, then they settle down to work on the next album. That's how it is with every musician...(though for some, it seems like they don't ever leave....ie.: Jessica Simpson for a while, J.Lo, Beyonce...thank goodness all that has died down.)
