Alice Comedies

Post by Jack »

Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but I haven't found it anywhere.

Wouldn't it be great to see the Alice Comedies - the cartoon shorts Walt made before establishing the company we all know, with a live action kid in an animated wonderland - released as a Walt Disney Treasures tin?

The list of shorts is quite extensive, and seems would be more than enough to fill 2 discs, and depending on the running times, there could be two different volumes:

Alice in the Big League (1927)
Alice the Beach Nut (1927)
Alice the Whaler (1927)
Alice's Medicine Show (1927)
Alice in the Klondike (1927)
Alice's Channel Swim (1927)
Alice's Picnic (1927)
Alice's Three Bad Eggs (1927)
Alice's Knaughty Knight (1927)
Alice's Circus Daze (1927)
Alice's Auto Race (1927)
Alice in the Alps (1927)
Alice the Collegiate (1927)
Alice at the Rodeo (1927)
Alice at the Carnival (1927)
Alice Foils the Pirates (1927)
Alice the Golf Bug (1927)
Alice the Lumberjack (1926)
Alice's Brown Derby (1926)
Alice's Spanish Guitar (1926)
Alice Helps the Romance (1926)
Alice Cuts the Ice (1926)
Alice the Fire Fighter (1926)
Alice in the Wooly West (1926)
Alice in Slumberland (1926)
Alice's Monkey Business (1926)
Alice Charms the Fish (1926)
Alice's Ornery Orphan (1926)
Alice's Balloon Race (1926)
Alice's Mysterious Mystery (1926)
Alice's Little Parade (1926)
Alice Rattled by Rats (1926)
Alice on the Farm (1926)
Alice in the Jungle (1925)
Alice Chops the Suey (1925)
Alice's Tin Pony (1925)
Alice Picks the Champ (1925)
Alice Plays Cupid (1925)
Alice Is Stage Struck (1925)
Alice the Jail Bird (1925)
Alice Wins the Derby (1925)
Alice Loses Out (1925)
Alice's Egg Plant (1925)
Alice Solves the Puzzle (1925)
Alice Gets Stung (1925)
Alice the Toreador (1925)
Alice Cans the Cannibals (1925)
Alice the Piper (1924)
Alice and the Three Bears (1924)

I think that'd make a very cool Walt Treasures Set as I got into the Alice comedies when Disney Channel showed them every night in honor of 75 years of Disney. I'm 90% sure Alice's Wonderland will show up as a supplement on the Alice in Wonderland: SE coming in January because that was one of the supplements on the laserdisc.

Do I think it would make an interseting set -- Absolutely
Do I think it would outsell Behind the Scenes -- Absolutely
Do I think there is enough interest to do this collection -- Nope

I know the Treasures are for the hardcore fans and collectors, but this one would seperate the truly hardcore from the borderline insanely hardcore fans. I really do wonder if there is enough of a market.

WEll, Id buy them in a second and my wife would roll her eyes and walk out of the room everytime I played them like she does most all the "old" Disney stuff on the treasures (don't get me started on her thoughts on MMIBW).

I know there would be movie buffs who would buy them simply for thier historical value. My cousin is a film historian at Harvard and not necessarily a Disney fan but she would buy them up in a second just to have a restored piece of history like that.

there's enough our gang/little rascals vhs/dvd releases out there that people buy, i would think that those same people would probably enjoy the alice stories?

or perhaps our gang is more popular than i imagine it being?

And I don´t think we ever will see such a Treasure Tin, since Disney doesn´t have the rights to these cartoons.
It should cost to much to pay for those rights again!

I thought the Alice Comedies were now Public Domain - it's the Oswald shorts Disney doesn't have the rights to :?:

Also, aren't some (or maybe even most) of these shorts lost forever? Disney does have some of the original film elements, but only for a few selected episodes.

I could be wrong. This is all from hazy memories of information I've picked this information up from the web, and as we all know the web is not always correct.

If it was aired on the disney channel in honer of disney's 75th..... then i think disney got the rights and own it already!

And i'm guessing that they'll put "Alices Wonderland" (the first alice, made in 1923) as an easter egg on the "Alice In Wonderland" 2-disc special edition DVD! So keep a look out for it ppl! :P

Some Alice Comedies coming on a DVD compilation in 2004

Post by Loomis »

I found this article over at DVDToons. DVD out next year. Thought it might be of interest to a few people as it contains two Alice Comedies and an UB short.
Slightly off-topic, but Alice puts it on topic I think....
Johnny Legend Presents: The Complete Weird Cartoons
November 28, 2003 (07:01am)
Reported by: Anthony

This collection of vintage cartoons is not only a loopy primer on animation history; it is also an offbeat reflection of western “civilization” in the early 20th century. The racism in “Little Black Sambo” and the overt sexuality of Betty Boop are all-the-more shocking when you think that this is what grandma and grandpa were growing up watching!

From the works of the world’s very first animator, Emile Cohl, to Walt Disney himself, Johnny Legend has compiled a twisted list of early animations that are guaranteed to surprise, delight and amaze.

Cartoons:

Alice’s Eggplant - Walt Disney (1914)
Frogland - Wladyslaw Starewicz - Russian Art Society of Paris (1922)
Alice The Toreador - Walt Disney (1914)
Hold Anything - Isadore Freleng & Norm Blackburn (1930)
Betty Boop’s Crazy Inventions - Max Fleischer (1932)
Inki & The Minah Bird - Merrie Melodies (1945)
Betty Boop in Crazy Town - Max Fleischer (1932)
Little Black Sambo - U.B. Iwerks (1935)
In A Cartoon Studio - Jungle Jinks (1931)
It’s A Bird - Charley Bowers in a Lowell Thomas Tall Story (1930)
Intermissions (vintage movies theatre intermissions)
Non-Stop Fright - Felix the Cat (1927)
Scrap Happy Daffy – Daffy Duck (1943)
Scrub Me Mamma With A Boogie Beat - Walter Lanz (1941)
Hasher’s Delirium - Emile Cohl (1910)
Small Fry - Max Fleischer (1939)
The Devil’s Ball - Wladyslaw Starewicz (1934)
Cobweb Hotel - Max Fleischer (1936)

The Complete Weird Cartoons is scheduled for release on 01/20/2004, with a retail tag of $14.98.

There are other people in the world Cherna :D

But seriously - I don't know what the quality will be like, but it does look like an interesting compilation. The inclusion of the Alice Comedies will sweeten the deal for many, including me. The other stuff on there is pretty interesting too, as it is a period of history I am interested in. Might be worth a look in the new year...

I pre-ordered it a while back just for the "Scrub Me Mama With a Boogie Beat" short. I never expect much from budget company p.d. discs, but theyre still fun to watch every so often...

I have to get this! I've only ever seen parts of the Alice shorts on various documentaries. I was hoping Disney would include them as a special feature on the new 2-disc "Alice In Wonderland" DVD, but I can settle for this cartoon DVD. I can't wait.

Hmm...it doesn't look as good as I initially thought.
Well, the contents do (they are some very interesting cartoons), but the quality is an issue by the sounds of things. I know you can't expect much from older toons, but the Treasures show that they can be scrubbed up (mind you, the smaller companies don't have the money that Disney does...).
At any rate, don't think I'll pick this one up now...

1914?!?

(sarcasm on)

I didn't know Walt Disney was making Alice Comedies when he was THIRTEEN YEARS OLD...

(sarcasm off)

I think they mean 1924, not 1914.
