Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but I haven't found it anywhere.

Wouldn't it be great to see the Alice Comedies - the cartoon shorts Walt made before establishing the company we all know, with a live action kid in an animated wonderland - released as a Walt Disney Treasures tin?

The list of shorts is quite extensive, and seems would be more than enough to fill 2 discs, and depending on the running times, there could be two different volumes:

I think that'd make a very cool Walt Treasures Set as I got into the Alice comedies when Disney Channel showed them every night in honor of 75 years of Disney. I'm 90% sure Alice's Wonderland will show up as a supplement on the Alice in Wonderland: SE coming in January because that was one of the supplements on the laserdisc.

Do I think it would make an interseting set -- Absolutely
Do I think it would outsell Behind the Scenes -- Absolutely
Do I think there is enough interest to do this collection -- Nope

I know the Treasures are for the hardcore fans and collectors, but this one would seperate the truly hardcore from the borderline insanely hardcore fans. I really do wonder if there is enough of a market.

WEll, Id buy them in a second and my wife would roll her eyes and walk out of the room everytime I played them like she does most all the "old" Disney stuff on the treasures (don't get me started on her thoughts on MMIBW).

I know there would be movie buffs who would buy them simply for thier historical value. My cousin is a film historian at Harvard and not necessarily a Disney fan but she would buy them up in a second just to have a restored piece of history like that.

there's enough our gang/little rascals vhs/dvd releases out there that people buy, i would think that those same people would probably enjoy the alice stories?

or perhaps our gang is more popular than i imagine it being?

And I don´t think we ever will see such a Treasure Tin, since Disney doesn´t have the rights to these cartoons.
It should cost to much to pay for those rights again!

I thought the Alice Comedies were now Public Domain - it's the Oswald shorts Disney doesn't have the rights to

Also, aren't some (or maybe even most) of these shorts lost forever? Disney does have some of the original film elements, but only for a few selected episodes.

I could be wrong. This is all from hazy memories of information I've picked this information up from the web, and as we all know the web is not always correct.

If it was aired on the disney channel in honer of disney's 75th..... then i think disney got the rights and own it already!

And i'm guessing that they'll put "Alices Wonderland" (the first alice, made in 1923) as an easter egg on the "Alice In Wonderland" 2-disc special edition DVD! So keep a look out for it ppl!

I found this article over at DVDToons. DVD out next year. Thought it might be of interest to a few people as it contains two Alice Comedies and an UB short.

But seriously - I don't know what the quality will be like, but it does look like an interesting compilation. The inclusion of the Alice Comedies will sweeten the deal for many, including me. The other stuff on there is pretty interesting too, as it is a period of history I am interested in. Might be worth a look in the new year...

I pre-ordered it a while back just for the "Scrub Me Mama With a Boogie Beat" short. I never expect much from budget company p.d. discs, but theyre still fun to watch every so often...

I have to get this! I've only ever seen parts of the Alice shorts on various documentaries. I was hoping Disney would include them as a special feature on the new 2-disc "Alice In Wonderland" DVD, but I can settle for this cartoon DVD. I can't wait.

Hmm...it doesn't look as good as I initially thought.
Well, the contents do (they are some very interesting cartoons), but the quality is an issue by the sounds of things. I know you can't expect much from older toons, but the Treasures show that they can be scrubbed up (mind you, the smaller companies don't have the money that Disney does...).
At any rate, don't think I'll pick this one up now...

I think they mean 1924, not 1914.
