High art movies aren't what makes the movie industry so great. Cannes, Sundance... who gives a shit? Here is a couple of the REAL best films of the century so far: A Beautiful Mind. Million Dollar Baby. Almost Famous. And the recent Cinderella Man. All true examples of great films. But Dancer in the Dark? It was good, let's leave it at that.Prince Eric wrote:Quote:

I HAVE heard Bjork, and she's good, but she's not the great music artist of all time. And her movie is the best of the century? I don't think so.
Well, let's see, there's only been five years in this century, so that statement (the opinion of many critics) would certainly be valid. Winning the Palm D'or at the Cannes film festival would certainly qualify it as such. Maybe you just don't like high art movies.

I`m a big Björk fan!!
I got all her cd`s and many dvd`s of hers.
I also saw her live in Sweden on her Greatest hits tour in 2003!
I am eagerly anticipating the soundtrack for her partner Matthew Barney new movie "Drawing Restraint 9".

Oh yeah, ANY new music from Bjork is an amazing thing. And big on my list.
I hope she wasn't serious about giving up instruments though. I mean, I don't care if she never works with guitars, trumpets, and harps again. But I hope she didn't mean that every future album would be like Medulla. I think Medulla is a one-album kind of thing. I hope to hear more music like it, but I prefer it in small doses.
I just have her Volumen: Greatest Hits Music Videos 1993-2003 DVD. But I'm definitely interested in getting any other DVDs from her tours / concerts, as long as they have interviews on them. I really want to see more documentaries on the making of her music. I saw some kind of Debut documentary on her website, and that alone put me on an obsessive quest to learn something about her 80s band, The Sugarcubes.
But also, Todd, it's REALLY refreshing to see that there are more quality music fans here.

Bjork's song It's oh so quiet used to be my favourite song as a kid since there was a guy dressed up as the Tin Man in the music video. Aren't I a silly guy?
I have to say that she is a bit odd, but technically a great musical artist. By the way, has anyone seen the French and Saunders spoof of one of her songs. That was rather amusing.

You've just listed some of the most overrated films of this century. Just because people like YOU can't appreciate the beauty of Palm D'Or winners, doesn't mean others can't. All the examples you listed are just Hollywood glitz and glammor with no real substance. Also, you listed four - that's not a couple.Just Myself wrote:High art movies aren't what makes the movie industry so great. Cannes, Sundance... who gives a shit? Sunset Girl
I was staying out of this thread since I'm not familiar enough with Bjork's work, but I finally looked into it and saw that Tori was mentioned. . .
I'm a huge, huge fan of her album From the Chior Girl Hotel (I wonder if it's partialy because it's the first album of hers I bought), and there are lot of songs I like from the other albums, from her first to most current.
Lazario, you mentioned some of the songs I happen to like on your "least" list, especialy "Bliss."
No hard feeings.
But my favorite song of hers is probably a toss-up between "Spark" and "The Power of Orange Knickers."
I'm also a big fan of some of Ani DiFranco's music, now that we're sort of on that genre here, as well as Charlotte Martin, (some of) Sarah McLachlan, and many others.
Enough's been said on the importance (or lack thereof) of radio play when it comes to muisc, so I'll pretty much leave that alone, especially since that's the field my boyfriend works in.

Then, you have to get this DVD

It has 21 of her music videos - Human Behaviour, Venus As a Boy, Play Dead, Big Time Sensuality, Violently Happy, Army of Me, Isobel, It's Oh So Quiet, Hyper-ballad, Possibly Maybe, I Miss You, Joga, Bachelorette, Hunter, Alarm Call, All Is Full of Love, Hidden Place, Pagan Poetry, Cocoon, It's In Our Hands, and Nature Is Ancient. It's over an hour and a half of avant garde thrills!

Is there a way to get the re-mix of Who is It? I bought the CD after hearing it on AOL, but to my dissapointment (and my surprise that I ended up loving the "original") it wasn't the versoin that was on the CD.

I bought the CD/Medulla album before seeing any of the new music videos or hearing singles. Listened to all the songs. Didn't like "Who Is It", then saw the video and liked that version. There are two single CDs of the song. The version you most likely heard was the "Bell Choir" mix which is on the UK Import 2 CD and you can order it from Amazon.com online, still available and ships in 24 hours (says them). It'll cost you $15, but you could get it from merchant sellers there for less than $10.Prince Eric wrote:Is there a way to get the re-mix of Who is It? News of an upcoming new Björk album ( from www.allmusic.com ) :
Why is this Big News? Cause for celebration? Because, by all reports, Bjork was in a creative slump or was considering a serious musical style switch - even more drastic than her Medulla album (my least favorite of her output). Thankfully, I think she got that out of her system with her work on the music for Drawing Restraint 9. She was having a complete re-think about the potential of working on another "instruments" album, while her 2004 album was technically all composed of human voices, without any other physical instruments to conduct the music for the album. There were just too many dud songs on Medulla because it was a vocal album and that sort of thing has some obvious limitations. Especially since 2001's Vespertine was already vocal heavy, and beautifully done that way. I am very excited about this! Any new inspiration is important for her.New music from Björk is generally great news, but the list of collaborators on her upcoming album — and the fact that she'll be touring extensively in support of it for the first time in years — is cause for celebration. Along with longtime partner in sound Mark Bell, Björk is set to mix it up with Antony Hegarty of Antony & the Johnsons, Lightning Bolt drummer Brian Chippendale, kora master Toumani Diabate, drummer Chris Corsano, and the hitmaker of 2006, Timbaland. An Afro-pop, jazz, noise rock, and hip-hop fusion is certainly daring, but in Björk's hands, it'll be ambitious and listenable.

Re: Any Bjork Fans?
I hope the moderators forgive me for the quoting block, but I need all three of those quotes in this post to aid the point I want to make.Lazario wrote:Radio play doesn't really matter. Do you decide what great music is just by what gets the most radio play? That's so sad, fake, and wrong.chaychay102royal wrote: I'm in the same position as Timon. What type of station would they play her music on?
Lazario, I think you assume things of people a lot. You may initially think something, which for some reason I've noticed tends to be negative, but you should try to see how there might be a different, perhaps less negative intention in what they said.
Timon/Pumbaa fan said he would try to listen for her name on the radio. He didn't say anything implying tha he thought radio play=greatness. He said he would listen for her name, so, I'm guessing, he could listen to her song and judge her greatness from that. The same goes for Chaychay102royal.
I like you Lazario, and I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything of the sort. But, I'm hoping that you'll take what I said into consideration and try to see other meanings behind what people say, besides the ones you seem to always think, which are usually negative in my opinion.
Lazario, I beleive that STASHONE misinterpreted something Prince Eric said:Lazario wrote:What does that have to do with anything???STASHONE wrote:A century = 100 years.
He seemed to have thought that Prince Eric thought a century was only 5 years.Prince Eric wrote:Well, let's see, there's only been five years in this century, so that statement (the opinion of many critics) would certainly be valid.
