Have any Silent Disney works been released?
I would love to see some of these little pieces of history, like the Alice comedies, which mixed live action and animation. It looks like there are at least 58 of these, although I wonder how many have survived to the present day.
I am sure there are quite a few animation shorts, as well, including the Kansas City Disney films, and the Oswald the Rabbit films.
Sadly, thousands of the films from this era in film-making have been lost forever...

I don't think Oswald have ever made it to VHS, let alone DVD. I'm not sure what the situation is with Universal on those.
Anyway as for Alice and the Disney stuff, check out http://www.inkwellimagesink.com/
click on cartoons, then on Disney there are two DVDs available.
They have been quite decently restores, although I warn you.
I like you was desperate to see some of these early cartoons, and when I did, I have never been so bored in my entire life! They are sitting in the bottom of a drawer, and I have no desire to watch any of them again< So buy them only if you are 100% certain, these aren't something I would recommend if there's other stuff you would rather get.

And of course, an Alice cartoon is on the Alice In Wonderland MPE. Although it's the pilot and it ends rather suddenly (but apparently always did, as it was more of a proof of concept)
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Hi
Yes their is an Alice short on the Alice In Wonderland MPE. I don't know about any other Disney Silent Classics released at this time. There are bootleg sets of Disney Silents available though.

The 2 Inkwell DVDs are out of print. Ray said he is planning on releasing updated versions soon. Disney is releasing the silent Cinderella short on the upcomming Cinderella Platinum DVD.
If you are interested in Walt's silent period I highly recommend reading Walt in Wonderland. This is the book that got me interested in them. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0801864291/qid=1118529735/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-8073939-2698507

Re: Hi
They are all public domain. Thus making a bootleg is impossible. Anybody can legally make a copy.Disney Guru wrote:Yes their is an Alice short on the Alice In Wonderland MPE. I bought that on a field trip to the Art Institute in Chicago when I was still in high school. Awesome, awesome book. I still remain fascinated with the early history of animation, especially where Walt Disney was invloved.Little Red Henski wrote:If you are interested in Walt's silent period I highly recommend reading Walt in Wonderland. And the book mentions one of the actresses that is often overlooked in many Disney history/behind the scenes books, Lois Hardaway (I hope I'm remembering the name right, my copy is currently in storage).
It's also really cool to see a more recent photo of Virginia Davis, the original Alice.

Hmm, I wonder if she was any relation to Benjamin Joseph "Bugs" Hardaway, the director who is responsible for Bugs Bunny's name...Sunset Girl wrote: And the book mentions one of the actresses that is often overlooked in many Disney history/behind the scenes books, Lois Hardaway (I hope I'm remembering the name right, my copy is currently in storage).

Hmm. . . not sure. The other name I have in my head is Lois Hardwick or something like that. I'd look her up in one of my other books, but that one in storage is the only one I have that mentions her. I even have a pic of her in one of my books with the wrong name listed underneath.littlefuzzy wrote:Hmm, I wonder if she was any relation to Benjamin Joseph "Bugs" Hardaway, the director who is responsible for Bugs Bunny's name...Sunset Girl wrote: And the book mentions one of the actresses that is often overlooked in many Disney history/behind the scenes books, Lois Hardaway (I hope I'm remembering the name right, my copy is currently in storage).
Still, that would be really cool!
