I think slipcovers are the biggest piece of garbage ever created!

I mean take Bambi for example. It is one of the greatest and most well love not just animated films, but films of all time! The DVD has been wonderfully restored, there are hours of extensive material on the DVD. HUndreds of rare archival pictures and footage. And yet some people refuse to by it, because so far they haven't seen a copy with a slipcover yet!

Even worse is the Walt Disney Treasures DVDs

These DVDs hold some of the most valuable stuff Disney have ever made. They are quite possibly amongst the most valuable, brave, and imortant DVD releases from any studio ever. Disney took a brave step in choosing to release a comprehensive series on DVDs, featuring some of the world's most beloved characters doing uncharacteristic things, whether they be social stigma, racism or making fun of Hitler. Some of the stuff has been wonderfully restored and has not seen the light of day for 60 years, and may not see the light of day again for another 60 years. There are some who cannot believe how lucky they are that they have these on DVD and probably thought that it was a dream that would never happen. And instead of going nuts at how great this is, all the majority of people can do is whine because there tins don't have a number on it. Who the f*** cares what number it is. Just enjoy the frigging DVD for crying out loud!!!

IMO anyone who chooses not to buy a DVD because they haven't yet found a copy without a pathetic bit of cardboard round it, needs their head testing!

I've never understood this obsession with slipcovers. My Bambi has a slipcover, and there's nothing amazing about it-there's just some Velcro leading to a big ad about the special features. Honestly...

My slipcovers get very easily damaged so it's like almost no point in them. Okay I guess you'll say it keeps the DVD cover from getting damaged or it looks nice, but I just take a DVD slipcover or no. It doesn't matter to me!

I find that they're really just extra packaging. They become scratched if you keep sliding them in between two other cases (corners get boogered up too) and if you want to keep them, they're ultimately just another thing to box up and throw in the attic. I order a lot from Hong Kong and it appears many DVDs sold there have slipcovers. I keep them but they're nothing special and actually annoying to find space for.

Yup that is special! My slipcover is just stuck together with some hard sticky type glue.

If the slipcover was used to protect the case then the slipcover would look warn too quickly, I can keep cd's dvd's casing looking new for years, I have at least a dozen movies with slipcovers. I would rather buy a movie used and replace the case (always) then spend over twice as much to purchase the film with the slipcover (then finding one that is near mint) Sometimes the film can be found new for almost half the new store price.

Looking nice is not worth the extra cost.

Well, to each his own. Part of my whole obsession with DVDs started with the facts that they always looked nice and tried to appeal to collectors!

Frankly, I can't believe that people put so much time and effort into a DVD's appearence. The original point of DVDs was so that you could watch a movie, remember? Yeah, I'm happy that my slipcover is rare but that doesn't mean I'm going to sell it or go nuts over it or anything.

It seems like most movies have them now. I really dont care for them. I find the kids destroy them too.

Slipcovers are a hassle and deter from the enjoyment of the collecting part of the hobby. They are the new snapper case and we all know those sucked. Slipcovers are very easily damaged and produced to rapidly become scarce to create a sense of urgency in collectors to buy "Disney DVDs" as soon as they are released.

I much prefered the fat double alpha cases. Tarzan CE, Bug's Life CE (first print), Atlantis CE, Emperor's New Groove Ultimate Groove... All of these offered a classier cover to the standard mass produced editions AND gave you a better package that stood out in your shelf AND wasn't easily damaged like these cursed slipcovers that everyone obsesses about.

These threads sometimes serve to illustrate that we as consumers seem to be loosing our focus here. I rather see intense discussion (with the same passion we see on these slipcover threads) on a thread dealing with which DVDs are anamorphic, crappy video transfers or how much censoring has been done on each of these Disney classics. These are things that actually relate to content. Eventually, when blu-ray or whatever HD-DVD technology comes about and we are put in a position to have to re-buy our collections, we would be better educated on what movies to pass up on if it's just fluff.

I don't know about you guys, but I have learned A LOT about collecting movies from the era of DVDs. Disney and all the other studios will have to work harder to make me upgrade a lot of films in my collection. If we demand more as consumers Disney will have to give us more. Anything short of Disney Treasures quality material would have to be unacceptable.

I need to restate the follow comment.

Looking nice is not worth the extra cost.

It depends on what will be looking nice, DVD's in their original cases do not look bad, they even look more even when there is only the original case, (which is well taken care of)

If I went to buy a new book and one had water damage and torn pages, yet, was an eighth of the cost of the new edition, I would buy the new copy, now if it was only missing the dust jacket while the rest is brand new for half the cost, I would purchase that copy (unless I was a collector of those items.)

I bought Aladdin new for $12.50 after shipping costs, if I was worried about having a perfect slipcover I would have had to pay $20.00 plus, for me, it is no longer worth it. The copy I bought online did come with a slipcover, it was damaged in transent, while another had too much wear.

If I worry about perfect slipcover I would almost be forced into when to buy it and were, if I no longer care, I can buy it whenever I want and for less.

I much prefered the fat double alpha cases.

Need to find replacement cases for those.
