How Could Recent Disney DVDs Have Been Improved?
I looked for six pages and didn't see a thread like this so I thought it would be okay to make one. If there is already a thread like this that I missed, then I'm sorry and feel free to close it.
This is a thread about how you would have liked to improve certain Disney DVDs that have been released. I know that after watching some of my DVDs, I didn't really feel satisfied with what was on it. List the movie that was on DVD, then list what you would have added or taken out of it.
The Return of Jafar and Aladdin and the King of Thieves
I would have made them each a two disc with extras like:
The documentary "Why a Sequel?" (with a reason other than "we wanted money")
Storyboard to film comparisons
"Making of" documentaries of each sequel
Recording sessions of every song
More detailed "Behind the Microphone" segment.
King of Thieves presented in it's original 1.33:1 aspent ratio
This one I really wanted: Both movies totally re-animated by the team of artists who do the current sequels, with the CGI pattern on the carpet, and Genie's wristbands gone, with your choice of watchng the originally animated versions, or the newer versions.
Treasure Planet
Two-Disc set with a more detailed "Making Of"
"Behind the Microphone" Segment

Alice in Wonderland
Could of had a full picture gallery rather than the limited "scrapbook" they have now. There must be hundreds of Mary Blair illustrations in the Disney vault.
Could of had the radio programmes from the LD release.
Could of had a new Making of Documentary.
Could of had a "Be Mean to Alice and make her cry" set-top game (but I think I would be the only one to enjoy that).

I'd like to answer in general, and not to a specific movie.
I think Snow White and Atlantis really should be the formula of a good DVD. A making-of that isn't afraid to go beyond 40 minutes. A decent audio commentary (if not visual). Trailers are important and should not be forgotten! Galleries, deleted scenes, animation demonstrations, style explinations, story developement, technological achievements and the premier of the movie (see Pocahontas's publicity section) are all vital to a complete DVD, and to make room for all of this, PLEASE leave some kiddy features out. I'm sure the movie and a game or two will satisfy them!
When you think about it, only deleted scenes and a good making-of is the hard work. The rest just needs to be transfered from the computer.
Forgot to mention, I believe every animated classic deserves a special edition (either 1 disk or 2). The company is known mainly because of these movies, and they deserve the best treatment possible.

Amen to all of the above except the last one.2099net wrote:Alice in Wonderland

The Lion King DVD could use some major improvements. Instead of the stupid continents idea, just bring all of the features exlusive to there into the journey sections with their respective topics. Add to that the original 1994 "making of" special, more extensive galleries with THUMBNAILS, a publicity section consisting of posters (which are on the DVD, but in random locales), trailers, and TV Spots, and switch the deleted scenes on disc one with the virtual safari on disc two.

i completely agree that every single classic should have a special edition 2-disc release. I think that the sequels are ok with a single disc release, but i feel that the discs shuold be more fill. I was also very dissapointed with the alladin sequels in particular. I was expecting soooooo much more after the special treatment that The Lion King sequels recieved. I'd list what i would've wanted but Pasta67 pretty much got it.
Lilo and stitch should've been a 2-disc special edition!!!! It is, at least, probably the best single disc release disney has givin us, along with altlantis i was really impressed by how much was on it. If disney is going to release more single disc releases, they should follow the guidelines of those two discs. I don't own Home on the Range yet, but i'm sure that even though it's a single disc release it must be a pretty good one bc it has to compete with previous 2-disc releases like the treatment Brother Bear was givin.
i havn't seen all the gold collection DVD's, but i'd have to say that i think disney should re-release all those films to cover that collection up, bc i was really unsatisfied with what i saw. I'm really happy that disney is at least re-releasing some of those films in a better format (Pocahontas, Alice in Wonderland, and Mulan).

You know aside from what has already been announced, Dumbo is the only one I think needs a two disc treatment.
Robin Hood, the Rescuers and the Black Cauldron need to be cleaned up badly.
The package fixtures need to be released unedited.
That is about it.

This older thread ( In your opinion, what Disney movies really need restoring? ) might be of some interest to those reading this thread. altho it has a different "emphasis" on the discussion (video transfer vs features mainly).

OAR on all movies. I want to see movies the way they were in theatres. The Fox And The Hound is not OAR.
I was disappointed that That Darn Cat isn't OAR but full screen.

This may or may not be of interest to you, but the recent releases of that movie in France and Korea (I´m not too sure about the last option, but I know the land of wine and cheese does) have been restored and are anamorphic. Tragically, no deleted scenes back in.Sunset Girl wrote: The Black Cauldron is in definite need of being cleaned up, but what I really want is to see the 1-2 minutes deleted from the film before the initial release.

Well thank you, that is very interesting. . . I need to replace my poor broken region-free player before I look into getting something like that, though. It's amazing that we got any bonus features at all.Wonderlicious wrote:This may or may not be of interest to you, but the recent releases of that movie in France and Korea (I´m not too sure about the last option, but I know the land of wine and cheese does) have been restored and are anamorphic. I'm not at all surprised that it gets a better treatment overseas, that film seems to get a lot more respect outside the US.
As for the deleted scene(s), some people question if they still exist.

I agree just about the general clean-up of films...I bought The Fox & The Hound and the film quality is DREADFUL...it's almost as bad as the video I have which is 10 years old. I was going to give it a chance as it's quite old but then I watched Pinocchio and the job done on that is wonderful and it's much more dated.

The Cat Returns DVD needs accurate subtitles and the Ghibli's episode 2 short.
The Nausicaa DVD needs the JPN commentary track that is on the JPN DVD. It also needs the soft cover that the JPN DVD came with.
I agree the Alice DVD could've been a lot better.
These movies need new DVD releases badly Fantasia, Saludos Amigos, Melody Time and Make Mine Music.
