Treasures Content Delayed for P.C. Reasons?

Post by matthewgb »

Just a thought here. I have also been curious as to why the contents for this years treasures seems to be delayed. My theory is that we've just passed the anniversary on Thursday of a very Important event on September the 11th. Disney may feel that it would have been insensitive to reveal the contents of a war compilation that soon before the anniversary. There are potentialy contreversial things in the Frontlines set. Now that the date has passed maybe we'll see them release the contents soon.

I don't know, might be possible, but I think it's kind of a stretch. It's probably more likely that the contents just haven't been finalized yet. They've still got another month or so until actual press time, so perhaps they're trying to find more stuff to add, or perhaps working with Maltin for additional material.

In any event, we should get press releases for these by the end of the month, I hope/think.

Why would Disney care about the death and torture of 10,000 people in Chile by a CIA sponsored military coup? It does seem like a bit of a stretch...

In all seriousness though, why would Disney NOT want to exploit that anniversary. Everybody else did.

Maybe they were so impressed by my argument for Mickey and the Beanstalk that they are adding it to the treasure, hence the delay. :)

Has there been, in fact, an announced delay of the "Walt Disney On the Front Lines" set?

If anything, 9/11 makes "War talk" more acceptible, not less.
This country is more gung-ho about war-in-general, now than at any other time in the last 40 years.

Maybe Disney just isn't that interested in spending the time writing out a press release of the specific cartoons on each set and is going to let the fan forums do that for them when they hit the stores (and the mailboxes).

I don't claim to have any direct knowledge of either Leonard Maltins thinking or of the Disney Powers that be, as I stated, it was just a thought.

Well, in your original statement, you implied that the Treasures series, or individual titles within the Treasures series, were delayed, and speculated as to the reason. The Treasures series is being released every December and this is its third year. (2001's titles were released in December, as were 2002's; December is simply the release month, and the series is an annual one.) The series only gets four new titles per year. What I'm confused by is where you get the notion that ANY of these titles has been "delayed", whether it be for political reasons, connections to 9/11 or anything else. Were you under the impression that the Treasures series was to be released more frequently, or on a different time schedule? Or does this have to do with the fact that each and every film title and feature of each Treasures DVD title has not be announced? Were you under the impression that this year's series was being released earlier than December? If so, where did you get this impression?

I'm just trying to understand where you're coming from, that's all.

I'm not claiming that any of the the Treasures be will delayed that are supposed to be released on December 2nd of this year. I was merely speculating, that for reasons of political correctnes they were holding off announcing their content until after the anniversary occured. My tagline for the discussion had a question mark at the end to indicate I had no firsthand knowledge about the content or the timeline, merely that I was stating an opinion. I do understand that these are the only treasure release for this year. I hope this settles any confusion.

Ooh ooh...I got that beat, I got that beat:

:D

And just to get back on topic for a second: I know this is all speculation as to delay, but I sincerely doubt any of this has to do with September 11, 2001. I just think it is that crack team at Disney PR doing their "excellent" job again.
After all, it is Mickey's 75th birthday this year. Is ANYTHING happening? The December release of a Mickey tin encompassing a large chunk of that career would be a ideal opportunity to plug 75th birthday stuff, but that would make sense.
I suspect we have not heard any info because, as usual, you have to wait until you are holding a Disney DVD (and in some cases, wait until you have searched through the menus) to actually find out what is on it (e.g. Sleeping Beauty & the commentary).
