We've had just about everything else, but as far as I could search, no "what are your favorite bands" thread. I have an extremely wide range of music in my collection (From Metallica to Enya) but narrowing it down is not too much of a problem.
My Top 5 are as follows:
1. REM
It's funny, I didn't like them growing up...but it was more out of ignorance of their music. I was "forced" to listen to Murmur and Automatic for the People one day in 1992 (the things we do for a woman) and I was absolutely mesmorized. IMO, Murmur is one of THE best albums of all time, and it was Rolling Stone's Album of the Year in 1983...over Michael Jackson's Thriller.
2. U2
Call it a trendy or popular choice, but there are few better all-around bands better than this. Bono's lyrics are from-the-heart and Adam Clayton and The Edge can play just about any guitar riff imagineable. I finally saw my first live U2 show in 2001 (in South Bend, IN, their first post-9/11 show) and it was mind-blowing.
3. Sting/The Police
Man did I love The Police and never thought I'd get over their break-up...until Sting released Dream of the Blue Turtles in 1986. Sting is another one of those guys that writes some incredible songs, many of which are introspective in nature (as was virtually ALL of Soul Cages) ... I'd love to see what he and Bono could do in collaboration.
4. Jimmy Buffett
A Calypso poet that, until recently, could do no wrong on any of his albums. His library of music is so vast and so good I couldn't pick just 20 or 30 songs for a "Best Of" without struggling over the cuts for days. He's the only song writer that can damn near make me cry with a simple rendition of "He Went to Paris". His music is an instant party.
5. TIE - Pink Floyd and Garbage
See...I couldn't even pick just five.
The really, really old Pink Floyd music is a bit odd...but starting with Dark Side of the Moon it became mesmorizing. The Wall and Momentary Lapse of Reason were two of my most played albums in my college years at Indiana University.
Garbage is one of those industrial bands that came out of nowhere and rocked my world. I've loved just about everything they've done and truly enjoy the energy Shirley Manson and the band bring to their music. Oh...they opened for U2 at that South Bend show in 2001 and I was in Heaven.

I found the listfrom last time I did this (it was fave songs then), and many of the same artists/bands stay there.
In some order, but not really:
You Am I
Aussie rockers who have been doing it, and doing it well for years. Their debut Sound As Ever contains the classic 'Berlin Chair'. The best record IMO is Hourly, Daily, which features Sydney a fair bit, so of course I like it...
Their most recent record Deliverance shows they still got it.
The lead singer/songwriter, Tim Rogers, also has a solo album What Rhymes with Cars and Girls (which is great).
David Bowie
How could I not include? The obvious record is The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, but all of them really. Hunky Dory is a great one ('Changes'), as in Aladdin Sane. Mind you, the early stuff is just hilarious (and if you've heard 'When I'm Five' and seen the video, you know what I'm talking about). Looking forward to the new one, Reality, which comes out Monday!
The BeatlesDon't need to say too much more, other than Revolver is my fave record of theirs.
Radiohead
Another great band, I could listen to all day. The 3 songs in 1 structure is perfect (and used a lot e.g. Paranoid Android, and a lot on the recent Hail to the Thief), and Thom Yorke's voice is magnificent.
Almost rans include:
Tool, Neil Finn, Smashing Pumpkins, Ryan Adams, Jason Mraz, Dandy Warhols, Interpol
At the moment, what I'm listening to most is:
- Interpol (Turn on the Bright Lights);
- Hot Hot Heat (Make Up the Breakdown) ;
- The Kills (Keep on Your Mean Side);

I did this a while back too - and I can't be bothered to look up my list (but like all other lists it tends to change depending on the mood I am in).
So here's the list for today (I seem to have a thing about madness, but remember: it's a fine line between genius and insanity):
Talking Heads/David Byrne
Talking Heads were great - especially when David Byrne's creativity was allowed to shine through (check out True Stories - the soundtrack of the movie) but since splitting from Talking Heads, Byrne's gone from strength to strength. Plus he's a little bit mad.
Oingo Boingo/Danny Elfman
Well, I'm sort of mixed on Oingo Boingo - when they're good they're fantastic... much better than Talking Heads. But they're not consistant. Danny has of course moved on to compose some of the best film and tv themes and soundtracks of the past couple of decades. I do feel he is starting to repeat himself now though and could perhaps use a short rest. Plus I get the impression he's slightly loopy.
Betty Boo
Not Betty Boop before anyone asks. Betty Boo was the target of my fist childhood crush. And she's completely out of her tree in a retro 60's sci-fi kind of way.
and can I just say I'm disappointed one of those pictures has come from a site called NaffPopStars? As if I would like anything that's naff?
Kate Bush
Her work is just beautiful. Always surprising. Always brilliant. Very eccentric.

Not your average teenager group - they write and perform songs with deep lyrics and meaning. Sadly, there is no indication that either one of them is mad. But they're from Norway, so that can be easily overlooked.
Silent Hill 2 Game Soundtrack
Fantastic. And considering the subject matter, surprisingly good to listern to as an album. Some of the tracks are standout good. I also love the closing theme to Silent Hill 3 "Hometown", but the SH3 soundtrack is nowhere near close to SH2 in quality. Not mad, but listern to it for too long and you may become insane!
Of course the maddest musical artist of all time has to be David Bowie but for some reason most of his work leaves me cold. Still, he is a nutter isn't he?

I like Weezer too. And Sting. And The Talking Heads and Danny Elfman. David Bowie and The Beatles, of course. U2's alright and some of their stuff is really good. And I don't know very much Jimmy Buffett, but the song from "Arachnophobia" is very catchy and cool.
