Beauty and the Beast PE DVD cuts

Post by bennyb98 »

Hey
I'm new to the site so I don’t know if this has been discussed before or not and I apologize in advance if it has.

I was reading the review for Beauty and the Beast and I was a little confused as to what the 3 versions are actually on the disc?? From what I gather, the Work in Progress is the same as the only on Laserdisc, but the "Original Theatrical" version is just the SE without "human again"?
Is the SE just like it was shown in IMAX??
THanks!!

BTW, I have both the PE DVD and the original VHS (I still remember running home all excited when my mom told me she bought it!!!), but I don’t have any way to run them side-by-side to notice any differences

The Three versions are:

-The work in progress version

-The original 1991 theatrical version (although it has the cleaned up animation done for the IMAX version, which some say is brighter!) And the beast's stammer has been corrected.

-The SE version with the added Human Again song.

There are no cuts or edits to the film.

I believe it is the SE that was released in theatres... I could me mistaken, but I clearly remember the marketing of the new song.

Yes, but the original 1991 cut did not have that song! ;)

I know. That's what I'm saying. You were reffering to the cleaning up when talking about the original release, when infact it's the SE release that got a overhaul. Kapish? :P

The answer to that is yes and no. The "original theatrical version" is mostly the tweaked IMAX version. Besides removing "Human Again," the theatrical version is actually the original version for about 10 or 15 minutes. To explain, when the filmmakers added "Human Again" to the film, they realized that the backgrounds that follow it had to be redone since it wouldn't make sense for the castle to be in shambles after everyone had just spent an entire song cleaning it up. For the IMAX version, the backgrounds were redone up to a point. Instead of changing EVERY background that followed "Human Again," the filmmakers decided to stop at the point where Belle leaves. They figured they could get away with leaving the dissheveled backgrounds after this scene because then the Beast could be re-trashing the castle in anguish. To help with this idea, they added a new sound effect of the Beast smashing things as you see Belle ride away on Phillipe. So when you play thet heatrical version, you're actually getting the true theatrical version from the scene where the Beast gets ready for the dance up to the scene where Belle leaves (you can see the difference in backgrounds to the IMAX one). Everything before Beast prepping up and after Belle leaves is just the same as the IMAX one, though. So, basically, they didn't cram the 85-minute theatrical version, the 90 minute IMAX version, and the 85-minute Work in Progress version all on one disc. They instead crammed the 90-minute IMAX version, 10 minutes of the theatrical, and only the unfinished portions of the WIP (whenever you see a finished scene in the WIP version, you're actually seeing the IMAX version).
