Brother Bear

Going to see Brother Bear in an effort to save 2-D animation would be like refusing to go see Finding Nemo to bring down 3-D animation.

For the immediate future, the downfall of big-budget 2-D films and the growing popularity of 3-D films is inevitable. Doing things like that won't help any - in the end, if the movie is good, then its a success financially. If its not good, it doesn't do big business.

Even if Brother Bear was a big success, it wouldn't stop the next animated film from just as easily bombing.

That being said, I'm most likely going to go see Brother Bear, simply because the movie itself looks good to me.

Look, I can totally see why this film would appeal to a great majority of people. It has all the standard elements for success there. But it just doesn't excite ME in any way (and as we've already established, it's all about ME).

Of course I will see it to support the whole 2D front (which is dead anyways, from all reports, even if BB is the highest ever grossing film on the planet) and support Disney generally. But I just don't think the trailer - and perhaps as 2099 suggests this is a marketing problem rather than a problem with the film itself - makes the film look all that interesting.

I may be overly negative at this point, and as I said before, I'll reserve judgment until I see the film at Christmas. Who knows - I might love it! At the moment, with all I know about it and the trailers I've seen, all I can think it - "Blah!". A project like 'Home on the Range' excites me more (which also has a large number of detractors).

I don't want to sound overly negative or cynical, but I am, and it just comes out that way.

That looks awesome. Blue is my favorite color, and thats a striking image.

Reminds me of the image of Mufasa in the clouds from TLK. Disney was wise to release this close to TLK DVD - it'll improve buisiness.

Are the current trailers marketing boo-boos or not?

Certainly the trailers I have seen (on the web) make no reference to the "brother hunting brother" storyline which is what I personally find most interesting about this film (if indeed, the brother hunting brother storyline is still in the finished film).

However, as many people have remarked the current trailers do have a very Lion King-y feel too them.

Being as the last couple of 'boy's action' animated movies haven't done big box office for Disney, and 'traditional' animal animated features have, I can understand the current trailers construction.

But I can also see Loomis' point of view. Apart from the two moose, there's not much humour in the trailers that I've seen, and the plot does look a little cliched (but hey, I do like a good cliche).

I think the trailers may be underselling the plot - which is a shame, but it's probably better that way anyway.

Yeah I am really curious about this too! Are they going to make Kenai's brother very villainous...is there going to be an epic final battle???
I wonder how they are going to handle this.

It reminds me of the old Humphrey the Bear shorts! HEY!!!! Humphrey should have a cameo! So should Bongo! That'd be so cool. Even cooler-Koda is Bongo and his girlfriend's son!!!!!!

IN all seriousness, I think this one has the potential to be bigger than Lion King. The story (brother-hunting-brother) is better than a cover of Hamlet, and I hope Kenai's brother is very villainess and almost kills him in the end!

Well, this is the Florida team making this movie...so who knows what kind of fun cameos they'll put in here. I did hear that Scuttle from "the Little Mermaid" will have a tribute cameo for the voice actor who recently passed away.

Yeah, that was Buddy Hackett (who was of course in the Love Bug as well, and I'm sure a bunch of other Disney flicks).

And I've been kinda anti-Brother Bear at this point, but I do really dig that Golden Book cover. It must be a throw back to the Golden Books they refused to let us read at school (must've been too subversive...we did watch Disney sex-ed after all...).

Well it looks like the brother hunting brother element is definately in the movie. The synopsis on the website says: "Kenai . . . finds himself pursued by his own sibling".

Well, that could work out to be a nice Hitchockian shocker ending - the whole time you think the brother is hunting his brother, but in the end, he was just trying to return keys.
