I was lucky enough to get the chance to interview Irene Bedard, the speaking voice of Pocahontas on Tuesday. As I know there are many of you out there who go directly to the forum, (

That was one great interview Renata! Being a big Pocahontas fan, it was really nice to read Irene remeniscing about the making of the film.

By the way, this part was the best:
Ten years have passed since Pocahontas came to theaters as the latest in a line of widely-embraced, award-winning animated musicals from the Disney studio.

Take that, Pocahontas' nay-sayers!

I would love to see a recent picture of Irene. Does she still look as beautiful as she did back in 1995?

Do you have the 10th Anniversary Edition of Pocahontas. Watch the section The Making of Pocahontas as Irene hosts that section. It's very good. Irene was also used as the model for Pocahontas. You can tell in the movie. At least I did.

Yes, but the making of was recorded in 1995, so that is how she looked 10 years ago. I have done a quick search on Google, but it's hard to know which pictures are new and which are old. Regardless, it seems she hasn't changed very much and still looks

Hey, Luke, you can use what Ms. Bedard wrote about Pocahontas (if she made it has a heroine!) for the countdown!

awesome interview. Really interesting how each voice artist does their work individually. Nowadays I think it's different. It's all comedy and voice actors like Will Smith and the SharkTale crew, Eddy Murphy and Mikey Myers and I believe even Tom Hanks and Tim Allen all did their voice acting together. That only goes to show how talented they are for being able to voice against nothing. It's just their lines.. and imagination. Again, great interview.

I loved the interview with Irene. She seems like a very knowledgeable person. When I seen her pictures I had to say she really is the inspiration for Pocahontas. Someone mentioned that she is a host on the Pocahontas 10th Anniversary Edition dvd, I haven't bought my copy yet. I will be getting it soon though I am looking forward to it. The movie was great. And it's nice to learn about how they put it together.

Excellent interview, Renata! It's obvious that Irene is very proud of this film, and she has every right to be. I was pleasantly surprised when she mentioned the deleted scenes because for some reason, I never picture actors as buying DVD's and checking out the bonus materials, especially those of their own film. One thing that this interview has made me wonder, though, is if Irene sings in a band, why did the filmmakers end up casting Judy Kuhn as Poca's singing voice? Is Irene's a different range than what Alan and Stephen both had in mind? Either way, thanks for posting this!

I was wondering about this too, and it was hard to refrain from asking if it had bothered her at all (which would have been pretty tactless, <i>almost</i> as bad as my mother's suggestion that I ask her to send me an autographed picture

). Judy Kuhn has been on Broadway, while Irene performs songs that her husband writes for her. Not that I'm saying Irene Bedard isn't a talented singer, but I have a feeling they had a different sort of voice in mind for Pocahontas. But I really have nothing to back this up, so I'll shut up now.

Oh, and thanks for the kind words on the interview! It was so exciting to speak with her. I think I babbled incoherently about myself on more than one occasion. I doubt she'll want to talk with me again!

Great interview! I really loved it. I wonder who is stronger Pocahontas or Mulan? Like Pocahontas, Mulan was not waiting for a Prince to save her and actually saved all of China, a feat indeed. I would lean towards Mulan being Disney's most courageous and strongest heroine!

So would I, as Pocahontas was clearly waiting for something and Mulan just wanted her family to be proud of her.
