The Little Mermaid...fears about DVD

Post by Wonderlicious »

This forum is too bogged down with platinum edition discussions, but as I'm talking about the content of a DVD and not on a slip-cover or cover art, I thought that I may as well start this topic.

Is it me or is anyone scared about The Little Mermaid: Platinum Edition? I don't know why, but I really have an idea that DVD wise it's going to be pretty, well...blah. Most of it stems from experiences from The Lion King DVD. Yes, I worry that this is going to be a modified mermaid with reanimated scenes, possibly remade through the whole CAPS system (for those who don't know, Mermaid wasn't a digital film like other modern classics but a hand painted cel film). I know that technically it'll be the same movie in terms of story, but I don't like the idea of a complete makeover and would rather see a normal Lowry digital transfer.

To an extent, I have a feeling that the bonus material won't be all that good, possibly again linking to what happened with King. I'm wondering if people feel the same about this topic. Are you scared about this DVD like I am? :|

Yes I am!
Tho I don't mind the CAPS transfer (it looks better that way imo) I am worried to death about the cheezy bonus features we might get! Think of how much the creators can talk about it being the animation rescuer instead of giving real behind-the-scenes info (sort of like they called the Lion King a phenomenon half the time they were supposed to be showing backstage material!).

Yes, I'm worried. I'm also disappointed because I know we'll be getting stupid games that fill up all the first disc (because Platinum has to be for everyone  ). I just hope we'll get a worthy commentary and a lot of backstage material (let's just say, I'm hoping for Aladdin standard, and I'm scared of Bambi / Lion King standards).

I think following the terrific <i>Aladdin</i> DVD, Disney can certainly present a recent animated film in an outstanding package. Of course, the one we all complained about (<i>The Lion King</i>) sold many more copies, so perhaps they'll say "why bother?" But I certainly hope not!

LOL! That would be really bad!

I feel the same as Luke. After the release of Aladdin, I think Disney proved itself worthy of releasing an extremely well put-together DVD. I have yet to get Bambi, but I hear it is also excellent. And it looks as if Cinderella will get the same treatment. I think with the popularity of The Little Mermaid, Disney will feel pressured into making the best DVD release ever. I dont think we have anything to worry about.

I thought that since 1985 with "The Black Cauldron" Disney has been using computers to replace cells. Didn't Disney win an acadamy award for the special achievement for it? That sounds right to me because "Oliver and Company" has some CG elements in it, the film that preceeded "The Little Mermaid. And in TLM, the ripples on the sand and such look more like a computers work than a hand drawn cell, but I may have my facts mixed up. Could sombody clarify because I am confused and interested.

From my understanding, Disney first fully used computers for an animated feature with Beauty and the Beast, using the CAPS system. Before that they were all traditionaly done, but still had some computer effects.

Just look at The Lion King. Disney's most financially popular film, and look how it's PE ended. :(

Well, maybe I stand alone, but I liked The Lion King DVD. Of course it was no where close to Aladdin but I think since The Lion King release, Disney has released outstanding DVDs and The Little Mermiad will most likely be the best.

I have to admit, I liked it too, but after viewing Aladdin's bonuses and Atlantis's CE I was disappointed in seeing how overly-prometional The Lion King's DVD really was. It wasn't awful, but it was nowhere near being good.

My biggest disappointement about this Platinum release of LM is that they're doing a F.c..ng sequel to it....

And probably like with most upcoming PE's, Disney will most likely reissue the first video sequel as a 2-disc Special Edition with anamorphic video and lame extras a few months after the TLM PE is released. TLM 3 will probably follow suit with a similar package.

Or it could go like with the Aladdin DTV sequels - slap a few extras on both sequels as single-disc releases and release 'em in a 2-pack.

I think that everyone is sort of worried about the Little Mermaid, since I believe its probably the most anticipated movie to come out on DVD and since its the last of the most popular movie to come out. But I think Disney will make a good release since I see it as the one who started it all over again. I feel like its going to have a similar bonus features as Snow White and quite possible the best PE next to Snow White.

It's been out of print for 5 years now. Even when it was in print, it was sold for a very short time.

`I'll buy the DVD for the movie itself not for some extras; I'll leave the extras for a special collector's gift set. All I'm expecting from the movie is an excellent transfer and an Enhaced Home Theater mix.

I never cared for TLM but I wish they would stop the multiyear release cycle and keep everything on the shelves.

It's difficult to say which way Disney will go in terms of quality, but since only 1 of the 5 Platinum Editions has been anywhere near disappointing, I'm keep an optimistic outlook. Anyone else find it very strange to think that when the TLM Platinum Edition comes out, it will be only a couple of years shy of its 20th anniversary? We're going to have to stop calling it "one of the newer ones."

It holds the formula for the newer Disney films, thus it is also new.
