I've never really been a huge fan of Disney's live action films but just recently I've wanted to pick a few up (The first 10 or so). Is there a reason so many of these aren't on DVD yet? Also which of the first 10 or so are the best, I've seen Treasure Island and Old Yeller and both were alright, Treasure Island was very good.

A question to Luke:
Why isn´t Endurance and Tiger Town on your Disney checklist??
Tiger Town was a TV movie. Are you sure it's Disney, by the way? I liked that movie quite a bit, but I have no idea if it's a Disney film.

I'm not really sure if I should include "Endurance" with live-action features, because it's a documentary. Same with "Frank & Ollie." I do need a Catch-all category for the dozen or so Disney features that just don't fit elsewhere, but I've never been able to decide on how to label it and such, and what to include.

20,000 Leagues is very good. Only other one I've seen from that era (besides Old Yeller) is Song of the South, which is also recommended, obviously.

Well I've got Song of the South on two videos (I'm greedy) but thanks for the tip about 2000 leagues.
I really want to see "The Story Of Robin Hood" since I read at allmovie.com that people said when the animated version of "Robin Hood" came out that there was no point in disney releasing another version of Robin Hood because they'd already released the best version. I'll have to keep my eye out for it.

Okay, well here in America, it aired on TV in 1983. June 8, 1984 is a momentous day for American cinema, though - two of the decade's best films opened here: Ghostbusters and Gremlins. :)

Thanks for the info on Tiger Town. I'll definitely add it to the TV Movies section, with a note that it had a theatrical engagement overseas.

No, Luke not overseas, it had a theatrical premiere in USA.
I don´t think it was shown in the cinemas in any other country, due to that it´s very American in the tone and concept!

Hmm...you mean you guys don't love the Detroit Tigers and Roy Scheider over in Europe?! :o ;)

What is your source for knowing that it played in American theaters then?

Odd that Maltin doesn't mention it at all in his book, but I'll still keep it in TV Movies and add a note that it played theatrically here.

In fact there is a lot in Maltins book that is not correct! It´s good but you guys should not look to it as a Bible in Disney "facts" - it need to be corrected in many ways to do so!

And each film had a sequel that was even better!

i thought i'd dig up some stuff and see about this tiger town issue. in dave smith's book he says that it was the

"first motion picture created exclusively for the disney channel on which it aired on October 9, 1983; the film had a brief theatrical release only in Detroit beginning on June 8, 1984."

this is sort of an inbetweener because it is listed in the archives' theatrical feature film list, however is most noted for being the disney channel premiere. either answer is correct, but i have always considered it a theatrical feature. it was releaed on VHS only once in 1984 and is in a white clamshell disney collector's case (which i found for $8 a couple of years ago.....don't ask me how it's a long story). when watching the video it says created exclusively for the disney channel and walt disney home video. however, i still feel that limited theatrical runs make it into the theatrical feature films list (the straight story, spirited away, endurance, the hand behind the mouse: the ub iwerks story, etc.). i hope this helps in creating the "checklist". i doubt if disney will ever release this one on dvd though it seems more feasible it would be on a digital download list in the future with their new "box" system they're making.

Thanks for the further info, disneyfella and Chernabog. I'm going to put it with TV movies, since that seems to be where it belongs, but I'll note its theatrical release. Was there even a video release? It'd be nice to get a DVD...I haven't seen that movie in at least 15 years, but I think I have it taped somewhere.

As for 2099net, well, I think Gremlins is definitely superior to Gremlins 2, although that too is fun...but Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II are my favorites, and I can't decide which one I like more, so I usually say the original. The sequel is sorrrrrely underrated, that much is undoubtedly true.

Yes Luke, Tiger Town was released on video as Disneyfella also mentioned above!
In fact all Disney theatrical features have been officially released to the videomarket in USA at least one time - except:
Perri (released in UK though, from where I bought it)
Run, Cougar, Run (also released in UK, from where I bought it!)
Victory through air power (which we will have in the Tin this December - it was released as a bootleg VHS though, which I bough a couple of years back!)
and the problematic (for US at least)
Song of the South (also released in UK!)

chernabog i was wondering if you have time (or even if you have a scanner) if you could post some pics from the covers of Perri and Run, Cougar, Run....i've been searching for these two for a while and can't seem to find a place that has them. i found perri once on ebay, but didn't want to pay a as much as they were asking for it and then have it transferred for ntsc. i have yet to see a cover box for run, cougar, run so any help you could give me in steering me in the right direction woud be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I LOVE Disney live action from the 60s and 70s, for their slapstick comedy!

matty mouse,
if you liked the story of robin hood and his merry men (which is a very good movie) then you'll also like the sword and the rose. it's another entirely english cast set in england about the "days of yore". i can't seem to locate a copy of Rob Roy, and think that disney will soon be releasing it to dvd so i'm biding my time with the special editions.

I love Rob Roy, my parents have it on VHS, but was never able to locate a copy of the Sword and the Rose. Very good also.
