Purchased Apple Dumpling Gang today!

Post by wdwleesa »

Everyone, I found the Apple Dumpling Gang out today in my local Suncoast. It was the only one of the Tuesday releases that they had out. I had to pay list price for it but REALLY wanted it so....

I have opened it but not played it yet-inside there is an insert!! but that's it. No ads for future releases, nothing. And, to clear up any confusion, there is only one disc.

Suncoast seems the be the place for early Disney DVDs. I found Brave Toaster there just a few days ago as well.

Pease elaborate on the Brave Little Toaster DVD. Aspect ratio? Extras of any kind? Insert? Previews? Thank you!

Looks great on my DVD player. I only watched the feature-I didn't watch the extras yet.

Saw it today at Walmart for 14.48. That's a great price for anyone still looking for it.

i enjoyed the "apple dumpling" dvd a lot. i know anything live-action disney i'm going to praise (except the lizzie mcguire movie), but honestly it's a great one disc set. the making of is about 30-45 minutes long i think and has a lot of stories about the day they shot that scene. tim conway's conversation is hilarious. this is one of the funniest men ever. he talks about all the disney films he was in and how, "you got your script and went to wardrobe to get your costume and meet your animal, because in a disney film you're always working with animals". the "studio album" is the same one from the escape to witch mountain dvd. two gun goofy actualy has goofy smoking his cigarrette (which i was suprised and very happy to see unedited). the "rootin' tootin' cowboy" segment has pecos bill smokin his cigarette too. they don't show the whole cartoon, but it has a few clips and sure enough it's dangling out of his mouth. i hope roy disney gets a special edition of melody time unedited soon. i don't think they'll get any backlash from this release which may have been the test waters for the whole cigarette issue. hope this helps. i don't have time for a complete and thorough review, but if you have any questions about the content and stuff on this just let me know.

A little off topic, but it seems that all the Vault Disney/Live-Action-SE releases could have been 1 discs with the exception of 20,000 Leagues. Most of them have a main doc of about 40 minutes, plus 3-4 featurette that last 5-10 minutes, and the galleries. Kind of makes me wonder why they didn't make them 1 discs before.

SSsshhhhhhhhhh!

don't give disney any ideas.

i mean, these one disc special editions are fine but if there is ever a chance to spread the specials out we need to encourage disney to do it.

I just had to comment on it. I mean when I picked up the VD titles, I really expected jam packed seconds discs, and instead I got midly packed discs. YES, the material is superb, but it wasn't packed. The VD titles just seem like 1 disc releases they decided to spread over 2-discs. Just my opinion.

That being said: I ENCOURAGE DISNEY TO MAKE MORE 2-DISC SPECIAL EDITIONS . . . . NOW!!!!!

Did that just for you, disneyfella.

Yeah! Including a 2-Disc SE of the "Once Apon (Another) Dream" video by No Secrets! I can't wait to see the jam-packed extras on that one!

as long as the price doesn't go up ( i think we need to establish that parameter right now). that way even if it is the special extended edition of "once upon another dream" then we'll at least be getting more for the dollar. i'm sick of the SRP 29.99 for barebones :x

Bad news and Good news. The Bad: I haven't seen any of the 9/2 titles yet in the stores I have been in. Good: I don't have money if I wanted to buy them anyway. I'm holding out fro SB on Tuesday!

Well, according to our friendly insider - Trojan Mouse - the previous 2 disc editions did have to be 2 disc sets. And these new single disc special editions were planned as 2 disc sets, but implies some of the supplements had to be dropped or edited to fit them onto a single disc.
Trojan Mouse in the 'apple dumpling/witch mountain on dvd: 1 or 2 discs?' thread wrote:As I posted here about three months ago, each of these titles will be only 1 disc. The person who actually put the extras together said that he had more than enought stuff for 2 disc versions of Dumpling and the first Witch, but Disney wanted to do it on the cheap.
Trojan Mouse in the 'September 2 Catalogue titles - 3 new SEs & more!' thread wrote:Just talked to the guy who prepared all of the supplements for the Witch Mountain titles. He had a ton of great stuff for two disc sets. Unfortunately, Disney went on the cheap and each set will be single disc stripped down editions, despite the content that he prepared!
So it looks like you are missing some supplements - if only the trailers from the two releases that don't have the Easter Egg.

Plus the bitrate of the feature and supplements probably suffers more on these one disc sets than the 2 disc sets.

The Vault Disney releases that are 2-discs definitely don't feel like 1-disc of content spread over two, and I'm sure like TM said, some things had to go to fit on one disc.

Here's an example:

Old Yeller's second disc:
-Making of - 35:00
-Conversation with Tommy Kirk - 10:00
-Dogs! - 3:00
-Lost Treasures - 10:00
-Disney Studio Album - 5:00
-Production Archives

Thats a total of 65:00 worth of material, plus the galleries. Seems like they could have put that on one disc like they did with the recent SEs. This may not be the case, but it just seems like it to me.

If the "Old Yeller" release was one-discer, there would be no space for the "Disneyland" program, and that also could botch the quality of the feature itself. And "Old Yeller" is a classic... it deserves 2-disc treatment!! I thought it was a great DVD!!!
