How do you tell if the DVD you got is "genuine"?

Post by PMcOuntry »

I just got Beauty & the Beast PE and I want to be positive it's the real deal.

It appears to be, I don't see anything that would make me think it is not.

Are the dics in that one shiney or matte? The second disc, at the bottom, where it has the 800 number and all, it's blurred/crooked, and I'm wondering if it was that way on all the discs.

Just being parnoid I'm sure.

Thanks!

It is genuine, but it's not new as listed, it's definately USED! So I'm pretty mad about that, I e-mailed her and told her I wanted a full refund, but... when I bought mine, she had great feedback, since then she's gotten really bad feedback, so I may have to resell it as used on eBay to get my money back to buy it "new" from one of the other sellers.

I have two bootlegs (Snow White and Aladdin). I didn't know they were bootleg when I bought them, I got them at a flea market for REAL cheap before I really started collecting. I compared my bootlegs and most of my legit Disney dvds and I did see one glaring difference.

By the edge of all the Disney DVDs (where it says that it's not for public viewing, blah blah blah), it says "Distributed by Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Inc., Dept. CS, Burbank, California 91521" among other things. My bootlegs don't say anything about Buena Vista.

Check that out. Also, have you watched it? You can usually tell that way too. My bootlegs don't have extras (or have very few) and my Snow White stops working half of the way through (no scratches or anything) but Aladdin works fine- just no extras.

If the person you got it from on ebay has good feedback, I'd assume that it's legit.

I obviously posted the same time that you did... so it's used? I'd watch it and see how it is. If it doesn't work right I'd return it, but if it does I would personally keep it. That's just me though. (wouldn't want to spend the xtra $$ as they can go pretty high on ebay).

If you're upset that the inserts and slipcover or whatever are worn, you could always get Disney to replace them.

It is legit, but as I said before, it's used, not new as listed, sooo mad.

Well, lemme tell you my experience on when I was nice and did MMP's DVD Shopping on EBAY.

I bought The Little Mermaid DVD that had a real picture, and the seller's gotten pretty good feedback for selling those "OOP DVDs". Yea, except when I received mine, it was a TOTAL BOOTLEG. I know this because I compared it to my real Disney DVDs!

- the Proof of purchase could hardly be seen.
- on the bottom right hand corner where "Disney" is placed, the 'y' is Disney was printed wrong.
- pictures weren't that clear.

and my favorite:
- the seller shrinkwrapped the DVD by use of the shrinkwrap gun.
(No BVHE stamp, and I've seen better shrinkwrap by Best Buy. :headshake:)

But I sent the DVD back with delivery confirmation and I'm awaiting my refund.

Have you tried playing the DVD and checking to see what subtitles it plays? or the opening of the movie?

Because bootleg Disney movies have different intros/logos as opposed to real Disney movies.

I would know. I've bought a bootleg Disney--> Lion King 2. :x
but that was a long time ago and I'm smarter now.

Not necessarily the case.
I know there are buyers who wouldn't want to have negative feedback for their rating so they either..

1.) leave positive to receive positive feedback.
2.) don't leave any feedback at all...

I've examined it very closely, compared it to my others, etc. and it's the "real thing", but I can tell it's used. It plays fine, but if I'm going to spend that much money, I expect to get new as listed... it's the principle of the matter now.

Did they show a pic and say it was sealed? I only assume that it's new if it's shrink wrapped and still has the DVD sticker on the top (ie they show the sealed top and not just something shrink wrapped- I've seen some that were obviously home-shrink-wrapped like RJKD got).

I've seen a lot of DVDs listed as "new" but that had been watched or were not sealed at all.

Did the seller say he/she would give a refund? If it doesn't work, I'd definitely send it back. But like I said before, if it works fine, I'd keep it. As I remember you posting on another thread, you got a pretty good deal on it.

And yeah, my bootlegs have english subtitles as the default setting.. soooo annoying to change every time!!

Jeez. I just looked at the posting of it (the original one you bought). That really does suck. They didn't show a sealed version but they did say it was NEW and it said out of print, etc.

I had seen ones listed as new but underneath (where you could possibly miss) said that it had been viewed before.

I'd say you got taken and I'd give BAD feedback, especially since you've already re-listed it.

Sorry Tricia :(
